Chapter 5

The stock price was the first domino. I watched it fall from my apartment while reviewing supplier invoices. Jaden's company dropped another twelve percent in morning trading. The business networks ran segments with charts that looked like cliff faces. Someone leaked an internal memo about the board suspending his executive authority. The word 'pending' appeared in every headline, heavy with implication.

Petra texted: "His board just neutered him. How does it feel?"

I replied: "Like nothing."

It was true. I felt the same way I'd felt looking at the penthouse photos, the same way I'd felt closing the door on his face in the hallway. Not satisfaction. Not vindication. Just the flat, empty space where something used to be.

The flowers started arriving the next day.

White peonies. My actual favorite, not the roses he'd brought to my apartment with Lennox at his side. Someone had told him. Or he'd finally remembered. The card was tucked inside, unopened. I carried the arrangement downstairs and handed it to Marcus, the doorman.

"Can you dispose of these?" I asked.

Marcus was sixty-something, with kind eyes and the discretion that came with twenty years in a Manhattan building. He took the flowers without comment.

"Of course, Ms. Chapman."

More arrived the next day. And the day after that. By the end of the week, Marcus and I had a system. He accepted them on my behalf and threw them away before I came downstairs. I never saw them. I never read the cards.

I was in the Herrera Capital conference room on Thursday afternoon when Daxton's assistant knocked and stepped inside. Her expression was carefully neutral.

"Mr. Herrera, there's someone in the lobby requesting a meeting with you. Jaden Carlson."

I looked up from my laptop. Daxton didn't move. He was reviewing a contract, pen in hand, his posture unchanged.

"Tell him I'll be down in twenty minutes," Daxton said.

The assistant left. I watched Daxton make two more notes on the contract, check his phone, and finish his coffee. When he finally stood, twenty-two minutes had passed.

"I'll be back," he said.

I didn't ask what he was going to say. I went back to my projections.

He returned four minutes later. His expression was unchanged. He sat down, picked up his pen, and resumed reading the contract as if nothing had happened.

"What did he want?" I asked.

Daxton didn't look up. "To make a territorial claim he has no right to make."

"What did you say?"

He set the pen down and met my eyes. "That you were never his to lose."

Something shifted in my chest. I looked away first, my hand rising to the base of my throat.

Daxton went back to his contract.

I didn't ask anything else.

That night, I worked late at my apartment, reviewing production schedules. My phone buzzed with a news alert: Jaden's company stock had dropped another six percent in after-hours trading. I swiped it away and kept working.

I didn't think about Lennox until the next morning.

I was at a café three blocks from my apartment, waiting for a fabric supplier, when my phone lit up with a text from an unknown number. No words. Just a photo.

It was me. Walking out of Herrera Capital yesterday evening. The angle was wrong—too low, too distant. Taken from across the street, maybe. Or from a parked car.

I stared at the screen. My coffee went cold in my hand.

A second text arrived: "You think you've won."

I set the phone face-down on the table. My pulse was loud in my ears. I picked up my coffee, took a sip, and opened my contacts. I found Daxton's number and typed: "I need to see you. Now."

His response came in seconds: "I'm sending a car."

I didn't wait for the supplier. I walked outside and stood on the curb. A black SUV pulled up two minutes later. The driver didn't speak. He just opened the door.

Somewhere across the city, in an apartment I would never see, Lennox sat on her couch with her phone in her hand. She scrolled through a document labeled "contingencies." She had made it months ago, long before the wedding, when she first understood that Soleil was not going to disappear on her own.

The document contained names. Contact information. Ratings for reliability and discretion. She had updated it twice since the divorce was finalized. She selected three names and opened FaceTime.

The first man answered on the second ring. Lennox's face filled his screen. She was wearing the Tiffany bracelet. She didn't notice. Her voice, when she spoke, was flat and precise—the voice she used only when the performance was no longer necessary.

"I want her finished," Lennox said. "Break her. I want photos."

The man on the other end asked a question. Lennox's expression didn't change.

"I don't care how," she said. "Just make sure she understands she lost."

She ended the call. She set her phone on the coffee table and leaned back against the cushions. Outside her window, the city moved through its ordinary afternoon. She felt calm. She felt certain.

She had always been good at contingencies.
