Chapter 3

I stared at the Instagram photo on my phone. Lennox in a white bikini. Jaden's hand on her waist. The Maldives resort I'd bookmarked when we were still eating ramen to save money for his company.

The caption said paradise. The bracelet on her wrist said something else.

I took a screenshot. Then I opened my contacts and scrolled to a name Petra had given me three days ago: Marcus Chen, senior editor at Page Six. We'd met once at a fashion industry event when I was still funding Jaden's startup. He'd remembered me. Told me to call if I ever had a story.

I typed: "Are you interested in exclusive photos of Jaden Carlson's honeymoon? He's in the Maldives. With his adopted sister. I filed for divorce on day two."

The response came in under a minute: "Send everything you have."

I forwarded the screenshots. All of them. The resort. The champagne. The bracelet. Then I added one line of context: "The reservation was made eighteen months ago under my name."

Marcus replied: "This runs tomorrow morning."

I set the phone down and went back to my supplier contracts. My hand didn't shake. My pulse stayed steady. Outside my window, the city moved through its ordinary night.

The story broke at six AM.

I was already awake, reviewing production timelines with my first coffee, when my phone started lighting up. Text messages. Missed calls. Petra sent a link with three fire emojis and the words: "You absolute savage."

The headline read: "Tech CEO Jaden Carlson Honeymoons with Adopted Sister Days After Wedding—Wife Files for Divorce."

The photos were all there. Lennox's performance of paradise. Jaden's arm around her waist. The subheading mentioned his company by name, noted the recent IPO, and quoted an anonymous source—Marcus had been thorough—saying the bride had discovered the affair on the second morning of the marriage.

By nine AM, his company stock had dropped four percent. By noon, his board chair had sent what I imagined was a very terse email, because Jaden tried calling me six times in twenty minutes. I didn't answer. I was meeting with a fabric supplier in the Garment District, negotiating terms that would save me thirty thousand on the first production run.

When I finally checked my voicemail that evening, Jaden's voice was ragged. "Soleil, please. You're destroying everything. My board is asking questions. Investors are pulling out. This isn't just about us anymore. Please."

I deleted the message and opened my calendar. I had three more supplier meetings this week and a follow-up with Daxton on Friday. I didn't have time for Jaden's consequences.

Two days later, I returned to the penthouse.

I still had my key. Jaden had never changed the locks—a failure of foresight that didn't surprise me. The elevator opened directly into the foyer, the same white marble where I'd left my wedding ring. It was gone now. Someone had cleaned.

I walked through the living room toward the study where I'd kept my personal documents in a locked drawer. The apartment was quiet. Jaden's shoes were by the door. His jacket hung on the chair.

Then I heard it. A low sound from the direction of the couch. Not quite a laugh. Almost a sigh.

I turned.

Jaden was on the couch—the gray sectional I'd chosen, that I'd arranged, in the apartment I'd furnished with my own money when his company was still bleeding cash. Lennox was on top of him, her shirt unbuttoned, his hands on her waist. They froze when they saw me.

For a moment, no one moved.

Jaden's face drained of color. Lennox stared at me with an expression that flickered—just for a second—into something that wasn't innocence at all. Something cold and measuring.

I pulled out my phone. Opened the camera. Took three photos in quick succession. The sound of the shutter was very loud in the silence.

Jaden scrambled upright, pushing Lennox aside. "Soleil, wait—"

I opened my messages and selected Constance Yew's contact. Attached the photos. Typed: "Thank you for making this easy."

Sent.

Then I walked past them to the study, unlocked the drawer, and removed the folder of documents I'd come for: my passport, my birth certificate, the deed to a small property my grandmother had left me that Jaden had never known about. I cleared my jewelry from the bedroom safe—three pieces that had been my mother's, nothing Jaden had ever bought me—and walked back through the living room.

Jaden was still standing by the couch, his shirt half-buttoned, his mouth open. Lennox had pulled her blouse closed but hadn't moved otherwise. She watched me with eyes that were finally, completely honest.

I didn't say anything. There was nothing left to say.

The elevator doors closed on Jaden's face, white and stricken, and Lennox's expression, cold and calculating and no longer bothering to hide it.

Constance called me twenty minutes later.

"I have the photos," she said. "I'm filing for emergency acceleration this afternoon. Documented evidence of ongoing adultery in the marital residence. His lawyers won't have a leg to stand on."

"How long?" I asked.

"Two weeks if we're lucky. A month at most."

"Good."

There was a pause. "Soleil, I've been doing this for fifteen years. I've never seen anyone handle a divorce this cleanly."

"I'm motivated," I said.

"Clearly."

Two days later, Jaden's attorney called Constance to propose a settlement. She told me about it over coffee in her office, a corner suite in a building that looked down on the courthouse where my marriage would officially end.

"He's offering you two million and the penthouse," Constance said. "He wants this done quietly."

"I don't want his money," I said. "And I don't want the penthouse. I just want it over."

Constance studied me over the rim of her coffee cup. "You're sure?"

"I'm sure."

She made the call while I sat across from her. I heard her voice, crisp and cold: "My client rejects your offer. She wants nothing except an expedited finalization. You have forty-eight hours to agree or we proceed to litigation with full disclosure of all photographic evidence. Your choice."

She hung up.

"They'll agree," she said. "They have no other option."

The divorce was finalized sixteen days after I walked out of the penthouse for the last time. I received the decree by email while I was in a production facility in New Jersey, reviewing the first samples of my brand's signature leather goods. The email notification appeared on my phone. I read it once, then put the phone away and went back to inspecting stitching.

Petra texted an hour later: "IT'S OFFICIAL. YOU'RE FREE. DRINKS TONIGHT???"

I replied: "Can't. Meeting with Daxton at eight."

Her response was a string of emojis I didn't have time to interpret.

That evening, I sat across from Daxton in a private dining room at a restaurant in Tribeca. He'd ordered wine. I was drinking sparkling water.

"Congratulations," he said.

"On what?"

"Your divorce. Your production timeline. Your complete dismantling of a man who underestimated you."

I looked at him. His expression was unreadable, but there was something in his eyes—approval, maybe. Or recognition.

"I didn't dismantle him," I said. "I just stopped holding him up."

Daxton's mouth curved at one corner. "Even better."

He raised his glass. I raised mine. The crystal made a soft sound when they touched.

"To building something that's actually yours," he said.

I drank to that.
