Chapter 2

Herrera Capital occupied the forty-third floor of a Midtown tower that didn't need to announce itself. The lobby was all glass and steel, the kind of quiet that came with serious money. I stepped off the elevator into a reception area where even the air felt expensive.

A woman in a charcoal suit looked up from her desk. "Ms. Chapman?"

"Yes."

"Mr. Herrera is ready for you. This way."

She led me down a hallway lined with abstract art—original pieces, not prints—and stopped at a door at the end. She knocked once and opened it without waiting for an answer.

Daxton stood by the window, his back to the door. He didn't turn immediately. The city spread out behind him, Manhattan reduced to geometry and light. When he finally faced me, his expression was unreadable.

"Soleil."

"Daxton."

We hadn't seen each other in person in years. He looked older—sharper, somehow. The boyish edges I remembered from prep school had been filed away, leaving something more precise. He wore a navy suit that fit like it had been made on his body, which it probably had.

He gestured to the conference table. "Sit."

I sat. He remained standing for a moment longer, studying me with the same focused attention I remembered from debate tournaments where we'd circled each other like boxers. Then he took the chair across from me and went very still.

"Tell me about your brand," he said.

I opened my leather notebook and slid the first page across the table. Market analysis, demographic breakdowns, projected revenue streams. I'd spent eight years watching Jaden build a company. I knew what investors wanted to see.

"Luxury lifestyle for women who earned it themselves," I said. "Not inherited wealth. Not married into it. Built it."

Daxton's eyes moved across the figures. He didn't touch the page.

"Target demographic?"

"Women thirty to fifty. Six-figure incomes minimum. They want quality that signals competence, not ostentation."

"Competitive landscape?"

"Crowded but unfocused. Most luxury brands still market to old money or aspirational buyers. Nobody's speaking directly to women who sign their own checks."

He looked up. "Why now?"

The question beneath the question: why are you here, one week after your divorce filing, pitching me instead of using your husband's resources?

"Because I'm done building other people's empires," I said.

Something shifted in his expression—not quite a smile, but close. He leaned back in his chair, still watching me with that unnerving stillness.

"What do you need?"

"Two million for production and launch. I'll retain sixty percent equity. You get forty and a board seat."

"Fifty-fifty," he said.

"Sixty-forty," I repeated. "I'm not negotiating ownership of my own work."

The silence stretched between us. Outside the window, a plane crawled across the sky, too far away to hear.

"Done," Daxton said.

I blinked. "Just like that?"

"The numbers are exceptional."

"I know."

His mouth curved slightly at one corner. "My lawyers will draw up the partnership agreement. We'll meet next week to finalize."

I stood, closing my notebook. He stood as well, extending his hand. When I took it, his grip was firm and warm and lasted a fraction of a second longer than professional.

"Soleil," he said as I reached the door.

I turned.

"Welcome to Herrera Capital."

I walked back to my apartment with my notebook pressed against my chest. The October air was sharp and clean. For the first time in a week, I felt something that wasn't numbness or rage. It felt like momentum.

That night, I was reviewing supplier contracts when someone knocked on my door. I checked the peephole and saw Jaden standing in the hallway, Lennox beside him.

He was holding flowers—white roses, my supposed favorite, though I'd always preferred peonies. Lennox stood slightly behind him, one hand on his arm, her face arranged in an expression of concerned innocence.

I opened the door.

Jaden started immediately. "Soleil, please. Just hear me out. What happened was—"

"A mistake," Lennox whispered, right on cue. She dabbed at her eyes with a tissue that stayed completely dry. "I never meant to hurt you. You're like a sister to me."

I looked at them both for exactly two seconds. Jaden with his rehearsed contrition. Lennox with her performance of fragility. The flowers wilting slightly in the overheated hallway.

Then I closed the door.

"Soleil!" Jaden's voice came through the wood, muffled but desperate. "Soleil, please."

I walked back to my contracts and sat down. After a moment, I heard footsteps retreating down the hall.

Three days later, my phone lit up with an Instagram notification. I almost ignored it, but something made me open the app.

Lennox had posted a photo: turquoise water, white sand, Jaden beside her holding a champagne flute. The Maldives. The exact resort I'd bookmarked eighteen months ago when we were planning our honeymoon.

I scrolled. There were more. Sunset. Dinner. A close-up of Lennox's wrist where a Tiffany tennis bracelet caught the light—identical to the one I'd pointed out in a store window three years ago, when we couldn't afford it, when I was still working double shifts to keep Jaden's company afloat.

The caption read: "paradise."

I stared at the screen. My hand moved to the base of my throat, fingers pressing against my pulse.

Then I opened my contacts and scrolled to a name I'd added yesterday: Constance Yew, the divorce attorney Petra had recommended. The one who specialized in high-asset separations and had a reputation for being ruthless.

I typed a message: "I have additional evidence. When can we meet?"

The response came in less than a minute: "Tomorrow. 9 AM."

I set the phone down and went back to my contracts. Outside my window, the city glittered in the dark. Somewhere out there, Jaden and Lennox were toasting their paradise.

I had work to do.
