My Husband Let His Mistress Kill Our Baby Chapter 1

I pressed my fingertips against my sternum. It was an old reflex. My brother, Rafael, died six years ago, but my fingers still searched for the hollow between my ribs every time I felt small.

On the other side of the bathroom door, Lawson was laughing.

"The Hamptons house is open, Kairi," he said into his phone. "Just pack a bag. I’ll handle the rest."

I looked at myself in the mirror. Today was our fifth wedding anniversary. I smoothed down my dress, opened the door, and stood in the hallway.

Lawson didn't jump. He ended the call calmly, slipped his phone into his jacket, and adjusted his gold cufflinks. He looked crisp, polished, and untouchable.

"Lawson," I said quietly. "Do you know what day it is?"

He looked up. "It’s Friday, Em."

"It’s our anniversary."

He paused for half a second. His face didn't show guilt. It showed irritation.

"Something came up at the firm," he said smoothly. "A client emergency out in the Hamptons. Business obligation. I’ll make it up to you next week."

"You're going with her."

"Don't start," he said, picking up his car keys. "We've talked about your paranoia. I’m working."

The front door clicked shut before I could speak. I didn't argue. I didn't yell. In this house, tears were just ammunition for him.

Late that night, the silence of the penthouse felt suffocating. I sat on the cold bathroom tile, staring down at the little plastic stick in my trembling hand.

Two pink lines.

My heart hammered against my ribs. A baby. A tiny, fragile spark of hope flickered in the dark corners of my chest. Maybe this could fix things. Maybe the man who used to love me—the man who carried my brother’s heart inside his chest—would finally come home.

I waited up for him. One night passed. Then two. Then three.

He didn't walk through the door until Monday evening. He tossed his duffel bag onto a chair. When he walked past me, he smelled like salt water and heavy gardenia perfume. Kairi’s scent.

I swallowed the news. I kept it locked in my throat like a secret I wasn't allowed to share.

It was two nights later when I finally found the courage. Lawson was home for dinner, sitting across from me at the marble island. He looked relaxed, almost like the boy I had fallen in love with years ago.

"Lawson," I whispered, clutching my napkin. "I’m pregnant."

His fork stopped an inch above his plate.

He didn't smile. He didn't reach across the table to hold my hand.

His eyes narrowed. The warmth vanished, replaced by cold calculation.

"Pregnant," he repeated. It sounded like an error on a balance sheet.

"Six weeks," I said, my voice wavering.

He set his fork down with a quiet clink. "We’ll need to manage this carefully."

A chill ran down my back. *Manage.* That was Lawson’s word for control.

Over the next few days, his behavior gave me whiplash. By day, he was distant and barely spoke to me. But in the dead of night, I would wake up to the weight of his warm palm resting gently against my stomach. It felt like love. But the moment my breath hitched and he realized I was awake, he ripped his hand away as if my skin had burned him. He rolled over, pulling the blankets tight, leaving me cold in the dark.

The Hughes family never missed anything. Within forty-eight hours, Lawson's father, Douglas, found out through the penthouse staff.

Douglas didn't call to congratulate me. He never spoke to me unless he was forced to. To Douglas Hughes, I was just a low-class girl from a dead mechanic's family, a stain on his bloodline.

On Thursday morning, our maid, Maria, set an amber glass bottle on my nightstand.

"What is this?" I asked.

"From Mr. Hughes," Maria said softly, keeping her eyes down. "He had Dr. Osei prepare special prenatal supplements for you, ma'am. Mr. Hughes insists you take them twice a day for the baby."

I picked up the bottle. The glass was cool against my skin. For a second, I thought it was an olive branch. Maybe even Douglas couldn't reject his own grandchild.

I twisted the cap and swallowed the first pill with water, having no idea what was really inside.

By the weekend, the penthouse felt like a cage. Lawson was gone again. My chest was so tight I could barely draw a full breath. I needed an escape. I needed Rafael.

I drove two hours upstate to a small, rundown asphalt track. It was an amateur grassroots track day. The air smelled of burnt rubber, cheap motor oil, and high-octane fuel. For the first time in months, my lungs opened up.

I borrowed a beat-up sedan from an old friend, pulled my brother's battered helmet over my head, and strapped into the harness.

When the green flag dropped, everything fell away. The penthouse, Kairi, Lawson’s cold eyes—they vanished. There was only the roar of the engine, the vibration of the pedals, and the sharp bite of the tires against the blacktop. I drove the way Rafael had taught me: smooth through the corners, brutal on the straights.

I crossed the finish line first.

Holding that cheap plastic trophy, my hands shook with pure, forgotten joy. A local racing blog took a photo of me on the podium and put it online with a short headline: *Hughes Heir's Wife Dominates Local Track Day.*

When I walked into the penthouse on Monday afternoon, the lights were off. Lawson was sitting on the sofa, the blue light of his laptop illuminating his sharp jaw.

The blog post was glowing on his screen.

"You went racing," he said. His voice was dead, but the knuckles clutching his bourbon glass were white.

"It was just an amateur race," I said. "I needed air."

Lawson stood up slowly. His eyes locked onto mine, burning with humiliated rage.

"A Hughes does not roll around in the dirt, Ember," he said, his voice dropping low and venomous. "And you do not make a public fool of my name."
