Chapter 2

I made eggs the next morning.

Scrambled, the way Conrad liked them — soft, not dry, with a little cream stirred in at the end. I set his plate down at seven forty-five, the same time I always did, and poured his coffee without being asked. He looked up from his phone and smiled at me. That warm, practiced smile.

"You're up early," he said.

"Couldn't sleep." I sat across from him with my own cup and opened my laptop. "The Hendersons' charity auction is next Thursday. I need to confirm our table."

"Handle it however you want." He was already back on his phone.

I nodded and typed a reply to the event coordinator. My hands were perfectly steady. I had checked that this morning — held them out flat in the bathroom mirror, just to see. Steady as stone.

Conrad ate his eggs. He complimented them. He kissed my cheek on his way out the door and told me he'd be home by eight.

I listened to his car pull out of the drive. Then I sat very still for a moment, my coffee warm between my palms, and thought about nothing at all.

There was a particular kind of quiet that came with knowing. Not the frantic, clawing quiet of suspicion — I'd never let myself have that. This was something else. Clean. Almost cold. Like a room after all the furniture has been removed.

I had work to do.

I spent the morning on correspondence. Approved the household accounts. Called the florist about the arrangements for the Nichols family dinner next week — white peonies, the same as always. I spoke to the head housekeeper, Mrs. Park, about the guest linens. I was precise and pleasant and I did not think about the suite at The Plaza or the sound of Conrad's laugh or the four minutes of audio sitting on my phone.

I thought about those things later. In controlled doses. The way you manage something that could burn you if you held it too long.

Violette arrived at eleven fifteen.

I heard her voice in the foyer before Mrs. Park came to find me — that particular tone Violette used in other people's houses, warm and proprietary at once, like she was doing the staff a favor by being charming. I was at my desk in the sitting room. I set down my pen and folded my hands on the blotter and waited.

She came in wearing a cream cashmere coat and an expression of carefully calibrated concern. Her eyes swept the room once — cataloguing, assessing — before they settled on me with something that was performing love.

"Ariya." She sat across from me without being invited to. "I hope you don't mind. I just — I needed to see you."

"Of course," I said.

What followed was a performance. I'll give her that — it was a good one. She talked about how worried she'd been. About the distance she'd noticed between Conrad and me. About how she'd tried not to say anything, tried to stay out of it, but she cared too much about both of us. Her voice caught in exactly the right places. Her eyes went bright with exactly the right moisture. She said the word *family* four times in three minutes.

She was waiting for me to flinch. To go tight around the eyes, or flush, or lean forward and say *what do you mean, distance* in a voice that would crack just slightly. She needed something she could carry back — proof of instability, proof of aggression, a reaction she could shape into whatever story came next.

I gave her nothing.

I sat with my hands folded and my face composed and I listened to every word. I let her finish. I waited one full beat after she stopped speaking, long enough that the silence had a texture.

Then I turned toward the door.

"Mrs. Park."

Mrs. Park appeared in the doorway. She had been in the hall. She always was, when I needed her.

"Would you please see Ms. Nichols to her car?"

No heat in it. No edge. The same tone I used to ask for fresh flowers.

Violette's face went very still. For just a moment — a fraction of a second — something moved behind her eyes. Not anger yet. Shock. The specific shock of someone who had walked into a room expecting to find a wounded animal and found something else entirely.

She recovered fast. Stood, smoothed her coat, produced a small, sad smile. "I only want everyone to be happy," she said.

"I know," I said.

Mrs. Park stepped forward. Violette had no choice but to move. I watched her cross the sitting room, watched her pass through the door and into the hallway where two other members of staff happened to be attending to things nearby. She was walked to the front door, and through it, and down the steps to her car, in full view of all three of them.

The door closed.

I turned back to my desk. I picked up my pen. Outside, I heard her car start and pull away.

I wrote nothing for a moment. Just held the pen and looked at the blank page.

She would go straight to Conrad. I knew that. She would tell him I'd been cold, strange, controlled in a way that didn't fit. And Conrad, who had spent ten years watching me be warm and open and entirely legible, would either dismiss it or begin to wonder.

Let him wonder.

I uncapped the pen and went back to work.
