Chapter 3

He was home by seven.

I heard the front door, heard his footsteps in the hall — faster than usual, heavier. I was at the vanity in our bedroom, removing my earrings. I watched his reflection appear in the mirror before I turned around.

His jaw was tight. His eyes had that particular flatness they got when he was working to control something.

"She called me," he said.

I set the earring down on the tray. "Violette?"

"You had her escorted out of our house."

"I asked Mrs. Park to see her to her car." I turned to face him. "Yes."

He stepped further into the room. "She's family, Ariya. You don't do that to family."

I said nothing. I watched him.

"You embarrassed her. You embarrassed me." His voice was rising now, the control cracking at the edges. "What is wrong with you? She came here because she was worried about us — "

"You seem very protective of her."

The words landed quiet and flat. Four words. I watched them hit him.

Something shifted in his face. Not anger — something underneath the anger. Something that looked almost like fear, just for a second, before it curdled into something else entirely.

He crossed the room fast.

His hand wrapped around my throat before I could step back. He pressed me against the wall, and the mirror rattled on its hook, and the pressure built — steady, deliberate, not a moment of rage but something colder than that. His eyes were very calm. That was the part I would remember. How calm his eyes were.

My vision began to gray at the edges. I kept my hands at my sides. I did not claw at him. I did not make a sound.

A knock at the bedroom door.

"Mr. Nichols? I'm sorry to interrupt." Clara's voice, steady and unhurried through the door. "There's a delivery that requires your signature at the front."

The pressure released.

Conrad stepped back. He straightened his cuffs. He looked at me for one more second — that flat, assessing look — and then he turned and walked out of the room without a word.

I stood against the wall and breathed.

After a moment I walked to the vanity and looked at myself in the mirror. The skin at my throat was already changing color — a reddening that would deepen overnight into something unmistakable. I raised two fingers and pressed them lightly against it.

I reached into my evening bag. My phone. I checked the livestream log. Still running. The audio had been clean.

I set the phone down on the vanity. I looked at myself for a long moment.

I did not cry.

---

The days that followed had a particular rhythm. Quiet on the surface. Precise underneath.

I moved through the townhouse the way I always had — unhurried, composed, attentive to the household in all the ways Conrad had come to take for granted. I approved menus. I returned calls. I sat across from him at dinner and asked about his meetings and listened to his answers.

But in the hours when he was out, I worked.

I pulled my personal documents from the home office — passport, financial records, the private correspondence I kept in the locked drawer of my desk. I made digital copies of everything I had legitimate access to and uploaded them to a secure cloud account I had opened years ago under my maiden name, the one Conrad didn't know existed. I packed the things that were irreplaceable: my mother's letters, a photograph from my parents' anniversary, the small leather notebook I had kept since I was a girl. I sent them to my parents' estate in three separate trips, tucked inside ordinary bags, unremarkable.

The locket stayed in my evening bag. I did not put it back on.

Each action was small. Each action was invisible. Together they were the shape of a woman quietly walking out of a burning house before anyone had noticed the smoke.

---

At the Simmons estate on the Upper East Side, the lights in the study were on past midnight.

Diane Tran spread the documents across the conference table — printed copies, annotated, organized into a sequence that told a story anyone could follow. Wire transfers from Simmons-affiliated investment accounts. Intermediary LLCs registered in Delaware, dissolved within eighteen months. Corresponding deposits into offshore accounts in the Caymans and Liechtenstein. The pattern was systematic and patient, the work of someone who had believed he would never be caught.

The total exceeded forty million dollars.

"How long?" Adele asked. Her voice was even.

"At least six years," Diane said. "Possibly longer. We're still tracing the earliest transfers."

Margaret Holloway was already making notes. "I want the full evidentiary package compiled by end of week. Everything certified, everything sourced, nothing that can be challenged on procedural grounds."

"Understood."

Stephen Simmons stood at the far end of the table. He had not sat down once in the two hours they had been there. He read each document himself — turned each page himself — and said almost nothing. The room was very quiet around him.

When he reached the last page, he set it down. He looked at it for a moment.

Then he straightened, and his face was the face of a man who had already decided everything that came next.

"Continue," he said.
