A Wife's Fierce Revenge Chapter 1

I raced through the sterile corridors of Mount Sinai Hospital, my heart hammering against my ribs as Emma's tiny hand clutched mine. Her palm burned with fever, her once-rosy cheeks now ashen. Each labored breath she took sent ice through my veins.

"Hang on, sweetheart," I whispered, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the terror clawing at my throat. "Mommy's going to make everything better."

The fluorescent lights blurred above us as I navigated the maze of hallways I'd walked thousands of times as an ER physician. But today was different. Today I wasn't Dr. Victoria Hayes making rounds. I was a mother desperate to save her child.

Emma's condition had deteriorated rapidly over the past twelve hours—what began as a fever had cascaded into systemic inflammation. She needed specialized care immediately, and I'd called ahead to secure the last ICU bed. My colleague had promised it would be waiting.

"Almost there, baby," I murmured, lifting Emma into my arms when her steps faltered. Her little body felt impossibly light, fragile as a bird's. She nestled her burning forehead against my neck, her breaths coming in shallow gasps.

When we reached the pediatric ICU, the charge nurse's expression stopped me cold.

"Victoria," she said, her eyes not quite meeting mine. "There's been a change in the allocation."

"What are you talking about?" My voice remained low for Emma's sake, but ice edged each syllable. "Dr. Patel confirmed the bed twenty minutes ago."

"I'm sorry. The administration made a last-minute decision." She gestured toward a room where a team was settling another child. Through the glass, I glimpsed Dr. Lily Chen directing the staff, her movements precise and confident.

My stomach dropped. "That's our bed."

"You'll need to speak with administration," the nurse said, genuine regret in her eyes. "I'm so sorry."

I stood frozen, Emma's ragged breathing in my ear, as Lily turned and caught my gaze through the glass. For just a moment, something like satisfaction flickered across her face before she turned away, continuing her work as if I weren't there.

Ten minutes later, I stood before the hospital administrator, Emma cradled against my chest, her condition worsening by the minute.

"The decision came from above, Dr. Hayes," the administrator said, his tone clinically detached. "The ICU allocation was reprioritized based on critical care parameters."

"That's bullshit," I hissed, careful to keep my voice low enough that Emma wouldn't hear. "My daughter meets every criterion for immediate intervention. What parameters could possibly—"

"Major donors have expressed interest in Dr. Chen's research protocol," he interrupted, adjusting his glasses. "Sterling Pharmaceuticals, specifically. The board felt—"

The room tilted beneath me. Sterling Pharmaceuticals. My husband's company.

"My husband is the Executive Vice President of Sterling," I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. "Are you telling me Marcus authorized this?"

The administrator's expression shuttered. "I'm not at liberty to discuss the specifics of donor relations, Dr. Hayes. We can place Emma on the waiting list, but I suggest you consider transferring to—"

"She doesn't have time for a waiting list!" The panic I'd been suppressing erupted. "Call Marcus. Call him right now."

"Dr. Hayes, please remain professional. There are protocols—"

"Protocols?" I was shaking now, Emma whimpering against my shoulder. "This is my daughter's life!"

After another twenty minutes of desperate pleading, I secured a temporary stabilization bed—not the specialized care Emma needed, but better than nothing. I settled her in, murmuring reassurances I wasn't sure I believed anymore, then stepped into the hallway to call Marcus.

Straight to voicemail. Again. Again.

I was still trying to reach him when my phone rang with an unknown number. Expecting the hospital pharmacy or perhaps Marcus calling from another line, I answered immediately.

"Dr. Hayes?" An unfamiliar voice, grave and official. "This is Detective Reyes with NYPD. I'm calling about your sister, Rebecca Hayes."

The corridor seemed to stretch and contract around me as the detective's words penetrated the fog of my panic.

"Assaulted... deceased... crime scene... need you to identify..."

I leaned against the wall, my legs no longer able to support me. Rebecca. My beautiful, vibrant sister. Dead. Murdered.

Three hours later, I stumbled through our front door, hollow-eyed and numb. Emma had been temporarily stabilized, but remained critical. And Rebecca—I couldn't even process what I'd seen at the morgue.

Marcus stood in our marble-floored entryway, his expression a perfect mask of concern.

"Victoria," he said, stepping toward me. "I just heard about Rebecca. I'm so sorry."

"Where were you?" My voice sounded strange to my own ears. "I called you a dozen times. Emma needed—"

"Emergency board meeting," he said smoothly. "I came as soon as I could. How's Emma?"

"Critical," I said, watching his face for any flicker of guilt. "The ICU bed we were promised went to Lily Chen's patient instead. Apparently on the recommendation of 'major donors.' Sterling Pharmaceuticals was specifically mentioned."

Something flickered in his eyes—surprise? Concern? But it vanished so quickly I couldn't be sure.

"That's ridiculous," he said, reaching for me. "I would never—"

I stepped back. "The police say Rebecca was sexually assaulted before she was killed. They found her in the alley behind Lily's apartment building."

Marcus's expression hardened. "What exactly are you implying, Victoria?"

"I'm not implying anything," I said, a chill settling in my bones as I looked at this man I'd loved for nine years. "I'm asking what you know."

"Lily had nothing to do with this," he said, too quickly. "This is grief talking. You're not thinking clearly."

As he reached for me again, I noticed a faint smudge of lipstick on his collar—a shade I'd never worn.
