Chapter 2

The morning session began at nine. I entered through the service door with a tray of water glasses, each one filled to the same level, each one placed on the tray with the rim facing the same direction. This is what eight years teaches you: that survival is repetition, that invisibility is a skill, that you can walk through a room of wolves and not one of them will remember your face if you do it correctly.

The summit hall was full. Council observers sat along the east wall, their notebooks open, their expressions carefully neutral. The territorial agreements under discussion were minor — water rights, hunting boundaries, the usual architecture of pack diplomacy — but the presence of Angel Dunn made everything in the room feel like it was being weighed. He sat three seats from the head of the table, his Beta to his right, his posture the specific kind of relaxed that powerful men use to communicate that they are not trying.

I moved along the perimeter. Set glasses. Withdrew. The Duskhollow Alpha was speaking about border patrols. A visiting Gamma made notes. I reached Angel's section of the table and my scar went cold enough that I felt it behind my eyes.

I set the glass near his place without looking at his face. My hand was steady. The glass made no sound against the wood.

His hand moved.

Not far. Just a few inches across the table, fingers extending toward my wrist in the specific way a man reaches for something without thinking. Then he stopped. His hand hovered there for half a second, suspended, before he pulled it back and curled his fingers into his palm.

I saw it. His Beta saw it. The visiting Gamma two seats down saw it and looked away quickly, the way wolves do when they have witnessed something they should not acknowledge.

I withdrew. Completed my round. Set the last glass at the far end of the table and exited through the service door without breaking stride. My scar pulsed cold the entire time, a metronome I had learned to ignore the way you learn to ignore tinnitus.

In the corridor, I set the tray down and pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist until the pulse there steadied.

The banquet that evening was larger. Two visiting packs, their delegations seated in the careful geometry of alliance politics, the Duskhollow wolves stationed at intervals to ensure no one forgot whose territory this was. I worked the wine service. Catalina worked the kitchen. Lily was upstairs with a fever that had started an hour ago and would break by midnight if the tincture held.

I moved through the hall refilling glasses, my face angled down, my movements efficient. The visiting pack from the northern territory had brought three unmated Deltas, young enough that their wolves were still loud under their skin. I felt them tracking me before I saw them. Scent is the first language. They were scenting bondless, wolfless, unprotected.

I adjusted my route. Kept to the edges. The Duskhollow Alpha noticed — his eyes flicked toward the Deltas, then toward me, his mouth tightening — but before he could move, the air in the hall changed.

It did not shift. It flattened. The pressure came from across the room, a wave of Alpha aura so dense I felt it in my teeth. Every wolf in the hall went still. The two Deltas who had been tracking me dropped their eyes and took three steps back without deciding to. One of them made a small sound, high in his throat, almost a whine.

I turned.

Angel had not risen from his chair. He sat exactly as he had been sitting, his wineglass in his hand, his posture unchanged. But his aura filled the room like water filling a sinking ship, and it was directed entirely at the two Deltas who had been scenting me.

He held it. Five seconds. Ten. The Deltas' knees bent. One of them dropped his gaze to the floor. The other backed toward the wall, his wolf pressing him down from the inside.

Angel released the pressure. The hall exhaled. Conversation resumed in careful, quiet increments. The Duskhollow Alpha cleared his throat and gestured for the next course.

I continued serving.

Every wolf in that hall understood what had just happened. The Alpha of Ironveil had publicly claimed protective authority over an Omega servant. It was not a formal declaration — those required witnesses and ceremony — but it was a biological one, unmistakable, the kind of claim that does not need words.

I did not look at him. Not once. I finished my round, refilled the glasses that needed refilling, and exited through the service door at the far end of the hall.

In the corridor, I set the wine carafe down and leaned against the wall for three seconds. My hands were steady. My pulse was not.

Catalina found me in the kitchen an hour later.

"His Beta was asking questions," she said. She did not sit. "How long you've been here. What circumstances. Whether you have family."

"And?"

"I told him what everyone knows. Eight years. Pregnant. Alone. A daughter." She paused. "He didn't ask her name. But his face said he knew."

I nodded. I had expected this. The Beta was loyal, thorough, and smart enough to know when his Alpha needed information delivered without editorializing. He would have given Angel the ledger. He would not have offered interpretation.

"How long until he comes looking?" Catalina asked.

"He won't." I rinsed the carafe, dried it, set it on the rack. "Not yet. He's still trying to make sense of what his wolf is telling him."

"And when he does make sense of it?"

I turned off the water. "Then the stage will be ready."

Upstairs, Lily's fever had broken. She was asleep with the silver wolf drawing on the pillow beside her, the one where the wolf stands alone in an open field, looking toward something past the edge of the page.

Two floors below, in a guest suite I would never see, an Alpha sat in the dark with a ledger of information that told him everything and explained nothing. His wolf was howling. It had not stopped since Wednesday morning.

I closed Lily's door and went to bed.
