Chapter 4

Her voice quavered with exactly the right amount of helplessness, a sound she had practiced the way other women practiced scales on a piano, each note calibrated to trigger the specific reflex Dante could never override: the impulse to shelter, to rescue, to protect the woman he believed was fragile enough to deserve it.

Before the last syllable left her mouth, he was already in front of her, eyes full of anguish.

He freed her from the car with the gentlest hands, cradled her like something precious, and carried her back inside the estate gates. I watched them go from the ground, my cheek pressed to the gravel, blood sliding warm and slow into my left eye. The soldiers at the gate saw everything. Not one of them moved toward me. In the DeLuca household, you followed the Don's attention the way a compass needle follows north, and his attention had already disappeared through the front door with Serafina gathered against his chest.

The sky above me dimmed from white to violet. A gardener, old and quiet, the kind of man who survived decades inside a Family by never remembering what he saw, left a folded cloth beside my hand before retreating into the hedge line without a word.

I pressed the cloth to my temple. I stood. I picked up my suitcase, which had landed on its side six feet away, and I walked.

Two hours later, after he'd finally coaxed Serafina to sleep, Dante searched the entire estate barefoot. He opened every door, checked the wine cellar, the panic room behind the study, the garden shed where I sometimes sat in summer with a book and a glass of limoncello. He checked the room that had been mine alone for months, the narrow bedroom at the end of the east wing that smelled of lavender and old paper, and he found the closet half-empty, the dresser drawers pulled out and wiped clean, and the bedside table bare except for a single impression in the dust where a framed photograph had once stood.

He didn't find a single trace of me.

The night stars hung low.

In the airport waiting lounge, gauze wrapped around my head, my phone kept ringing and ringing for reasons I didn't care to know. The fluorescent lights above hummed their flat, indifferent hum, and around me ordinary travelers dragged rolling bags and argued about boarding groups, and none of them looked twice at the woman in the plastic chair with blood dried brown at her hairline and a suitcase clutched between her knees like a life raft.

I ignored it. I sat quietly and waited for the battery to die.

My thumb traced the pale band on my ring finger, slow and steady, rubbing the naked skin where the alliance ring had once sat, and I let the repetition settle my breathing the way a rosary settles prayer, bead by bead, circle by circle, until the trembling in my hands became something I could fold away and store in the same locked place where I kept everything else Dante DeLuca had cost me.

The moment the screen went black, the plane I was on lifted slowly into the sky.

Three days later.

A penthouse in the clouds, city center.

Serafina stood by the infinity pool on the wraparound terrace, sixty floors above the streets where DeLuca territory bled into the financial district, gazing at Dante with eyes brimming with emotion:

"Dante, are you sure everything in this place was prepared just for me?"

Extravagant décor down to the last detail. Italian marble on every surface, hand-selected furniture that smelled of new leather and money freshly turned legitimate. A full team of household staff at her beck and call, each one vetted by the Family, each one answering ultimately to a capo who answered to the Don, a gilded cage dressed as a palace, though Serafina saw only the gold and never once looked for the bars.

Just imagining the beautiful days ahead, Serafina couldn't help but let a low, pleased laugh escape her throat as she burrowed deeper into the man's arms. The terrace of the DeLuca estate caught the last amber light of the dying sun, throwing long shadows across the marble balustrade and the row of potted lemon trees that lined the western wall. Somewhere below, a pair of house guards changed shift in silence, their footsteps absorbed by the gravel path.

Dante pinched the tip of her nose, indulgent. "Silly kitten, I promised I'd make you the most carefree girl in the world. And I always keep my word."

The last of the sunset spilled warm across the two of them. Serafina's cheeks flushed pink, and she rose on tiptoe to kiss him, but his phone rang, the vibration traveling through the inside pocket of his jacket like a second heartbeat against her collarbone.

In the past, no matter how urgent the call, he would have kept his arm around her and answered without a second thought, letting her listen, letting her feel that no piece of Family business could pry her from his side.

This time, though, he patted her shoulder and gestured for her to go back inside.

Something in the gesture was different. Not unkind, but final, the way a door closes on oiled hinges before you realize you've been shut out. Serafina's index fingernail gave one small scrape along the stem of the wine glass she still held as she turned, her smile fixed, her mind already working. She disappeared through the French doors without a word, but her reflection lingered for half a breath in the darkened glass, watching him.

The moment she stepped away, Dante picked up.

He lit a cigarette, held it between his fingers without smoking, and asked the caller as though it hardly mattered. "When my wife saw the jewelry, what did she say?"

The word hung on the evening air. Wife. He used it the way men in his world used the names of territories they hadn't visited in years but still claimed on every map.

Alessio Rizzo's voice on the other end went quiet for several seconds. The silence was the kind only a fixer trained under two generations of DeLuca authority could produce, the kind that told you the truth would cost somebody. When Alessio finally spoke, he forced the words out with the clipped precision of a man presenting unfavorable ledger numbers at a sit-down.

"Don DeLuca, the housekeeper says your wife hasn't been back to the estate or the old family residence for days. I've also checked every hotel and safehouse under DeLuca Holdings. There's no record of her checking in anywhere."

The cigarette between Dante's fingers gave an almost imperceptible tremor, but his face stayed cold and still, as though the information had struck a pane of glass somewhere behind his eyes and simply slid off. The rosary bead he kept looped around his left wrist caught a thread of dying light but did not move between his thumb and forefinger. It hung perfectly still.

"Then stop looking."

He hung up and smoked the rest of the cigarette in silence, standing alone on the terrace while the sky drained from amber to a bruised indigo. The lemon trees stirred in a breeze that smelled of the harbor, of diesel and salt and the damp stone walls of the old counting house downtown. He did not go back inside until the cigarette had burned itself down to the filter and left a faint scorch on his thumb.

Dante opened his messages and scrolled for a long time before finally finding my name, buried in the furthest corner of his contact list, beneath associates, capos, and restaurant reservation confirmations that mattered more to his daily life than the woman who bore his surname on every alliance paper filed with the Commission.
