Chapter 5

When he saw our last conversation, two messages I'd sent back to back, carefully asking if he could come home tonight, a flicker of contempt crossed his eyes. The messages were timestamped weeks apart, each one a quiet, restrained plea that read like the knocking of someone who already knew the door wouldn't open but couldn't stop her knuckles from trying.

He fired off an ultimatum without a second thought:

【Bianca, tomorrow is the day Serafina and I are taking our wedding portraits. Since you've been throwing a fit for years about wanting anniversary photos, I'll graciously give you the chance to fulfill that little dream.】

【If you're still throwing a tantrum and refuse to show up, then from now on, stay the hell out of my life.】

The afternoon after the message was sent, Dante sat in the bridal studio in a tailored charcoal suit, the kind cut by the Family's personal tailor on Mulberry Street, every seam speaking of money laundered so many times it came out smelling like nothing but privilege. He waited from broad daylight until the sun went down, the rosary bead motionless against his wrist.

The slender figure he'd pictured never came. No one pushed open the studio door with love in her eyes, no one rushed into his arms. The air conditioning hummed. The photographer's assistant rearranged the same vase of white peonies three times, each adjustment smaller and more nervous than the last, because everyone in the room could feel the temperature dropping in increments that had nothing to do with climate control.

When the photographer asked for the ninth time, voice trembling, whether they could begin, Dante pulled Serafina close with a cold face. She was smiling, barely.

He tilted down toward her red-painted lips.

The instant after the shutter clicked, he let go of her. In a low voice he ordered the staff to blow the photo up into a full-wall portrait and have it hung in the center of the estate's main hall before morning. His tone left no room for questions, the same register he used when issuing instructions that carried consequences for failure.

Did she really think a little tantrum and a disappearing act could keep Serafina from walking through that door?

Inside, he couldn't stop sneering.

He must have been too lenient with me all these years, and now I'd lost sight of where I stood in his household.

Four days after the wedding portrait went up on the wall of the DeLuca estate, dominating the main hall like a declaration of war framed in gilt, a same-city courier package arrived at the front-business tower that housed the Family's legitimate holdings.

The building itself was a monument to the DeLuca empire's public face: thirty-two floors of imported stone, tinted glass, and security checkpoints manned by men whose suits concealed shoulder holsters with the practiced ease of old habit. The lobby smelled faintly of espresso and fresh-cut flowers, and the silence that filled it was the purchased kind, the kind that cost more per square foot than most men earned in a year.

Alessio Rizzo, who collected the package at the reception desk, walked so fast across the marble that his shoes threw sharp echoes off the walls. He nearly crashed into Serafina, who was on her way in with a thermos of soup wrapped in a silk carrying bag, and didn't even slow down.

But Serafina was sharp-eyed. She stretched out an arm and blocked his path, her smile warm and solicitous, her posture that of a woman who had spent years perfecting the art of seeming softer than she was. The soup thermos rested in the crook of her other arm like a prop in a play she had rehearsed until the role felt like skin.

"Alessio, is that something Mrs. DeLuca sent for the Don? You know the rules. He's in a sit-down with the capos and the silent partners right now. Even if the sky were falling, no one's allowed to interrupt." She let her voice dip into something conspiratorial, intimate, the tone of someone doing you a favor. "How about this: give it to me first, and I'll pass it along for you later..."

The second her fingers touched the edge of the package, the fixer who had always been perfectly polite to her stepped back two paces as if burned. Alessio's wire-rim glasses caught the overhead light, but he did not remove them, did not fold them. He simply held the package closer to his chest, and the refusal in the gesture was absolute.

"Miss Carbone, Don DeLuca gave explicit instructions. Anything related to his wife is to be reported to him immediately."

The word wife landed in the lobby like a stone dropped into still water. Not mistress. Not guest. Wife. The distinction carried the full weight of Church-sanctified alliance papers and Commission-recognized bloodline, and Serafina understood it because she had spent years trying to erode exactly that distinction, one carefully placed whisper at a time.

Without another glance at the ugly flush spreading across Serafina's face, Alessio turned on his heel and made for the elevators. Serafina stood in the lobby holding the thermos, her index fingernail giving one small, involuntary scrape along the metal lid, the sound swallowed by the vastness of the space around her. Her smile stayed in place, but something behind it recalculated.

Upstairs, the conference room occupied the entire northwest corner of the thirty-second floor, its windows overlooking the harbor where DeLuca shipping containers stacked like grey dominoes against the waterline. Inside, every senior capo and silent partner in the room sat in high-backed leather chairs around a table of polished walnut, and the air was thick with the controlled tension of men discussing territory percentages and laundering routes while pretending to review quarterly earnings reports.

Alessio pushed open the conference room doors.

Under the startled stares of every capo and associate in the room, he crossed the carpet with measured steps, set the courier package in front of Dante with both hands, leaned in, and whispered, "Don DeLuca, this is from your wife..."

Before he could finish, the man who never let anything interfere with Family business raised his hand and cut the department head off mid-sentence. The gesture was small, barely more than a lift of the wrist, but it carried the force of an edict. The capo who had been presenting fell silent. Every man at the table went still, their eyes shifting between the Don and the plain brown package that now sat on the walnut surface like an unexploded ordnance.

Eyes dark, Dante ripped through the layers of heavy packing tape with his bare hands, right there in front of everyone. The sound of tearing paper was obscenely loud in the silence. A strip of tape caught on the edge of his cufflink, and he pulled it free without looking, the motion sharp, almost violent.

Inside, apart from the padding, there were only two thin sheets of paper.

The first was a petition for dissolution of the marriage pact.
