Chapter 3

Dante held Serafina against him, her skin still mapped with the bruises of his mouth, while he refreshed my public account for the fifth time on the phone balanced against her bare shoulder.

His expression didn't change when he found it the same as before. No denial. No update. Nothing at all from his lawful wife acknowledging the photographs, the piano, the mountaintop proposal that every associate in three boroughs had seen reposted before midnight.

The silence from my end was, apparently, louder than any scream I could have offered him.

The next afternoon at two, Dante came home earlier than he ever had.

The DeLuca estate sat behind its wrought-iron perimeter like a cathedral that had swallowed a fortress: limestone façade, black shutters latched against the winter sun, two soldiers stationed at the gate pretending to smoke while their eyes tracked every vehicle on the private road. Inside, the foyer smelled the way it always did, of cold marble polish and the faint ghost of espresso from the kitchen deep in the east wing, and beneath that, something older, something that never quite scrubbed out of stone walls built to keep secrets.

He found me standing in front of the refrigerator, drinking water in silence.

I heard his shoes on the travertine before I saw him, the measured clip of handmade Oxfords that cost more than most families earned in a season. I did not turn. I held the glass against my lower lip and let the cold seep into my teeth, and for a handful of seconds the only sound in that enormous kitchen was the low mechanical hum of the Sub-Zero and the ticking of the antique regulator clock above the doorway.

The strange, restless irritation that had clung to him for nearly the entire day began, for no reason he could name, to dissolve. I felt it happen the way you feel barometric pressure drop before a storm: something in the room shifted, settled, as though the mere fact of my presence in his house was a kind of balm he refused to examine.

Our eyes met and he smiled, took the ice water from my hand, and drained it. His throat moved once, twice. He set the glass on the counter with a quiet click, and his thumb drifted to the dark rosary bead he kept in his trouser pocket, turning it slowly, almost lazily, the way a man fidgets with a weapon he has no immediate intention of using.

"Bianca, next month I'm giving Serafina a proper wedding ceremony. She gave me her first time, after all. I owe her that much."

The words landed in the kitchen like a coin dropped into a marble basin, ringing outward in every direction. A proper ceremony. Before God and the Family and every capo who had kissed his ring at the alliance banquet where our own marriage pact had been signed. He said it the way he said everything that mattered: calmly, as though the universe would simply rearrange itself to accommodate.

I nodded. My thumb found the pale band on my ring finger, rubbing once, and then I stopped myself.

"Sure. As long as you two are happy."

He stared at my perfectly still profile for a long moment. The rosary bead between his fingers went motionless, and in the silence the regulator clock seemed to tick louder, each swing of the pendulum marking a second he spent searching my face for something I had learned, month by month, to lock behind bone.

Then his voice turned cold and hard, the voice he used on men who owed tribute and brought excuses instead:

"Serafina is kindhearted. She's given you permission to attend and receive our first toast."

Permission. As though the lawful wife of the DeLuca Don needed permission from a kept woman to enter a room. I held my expression the way Luciana had taught me during our first meeting at her office, jaw soft, eyes level, breathing slow enough that no one could read a pulse in my throat.

"Of course, if you really can't bring yourself to come, I won't force you. Nobody wants to hear some bitter woman wailing on a happy occasion…"

I couldn't be bothered to listen to the rest. I cut him off, my voice soft:

"I'll be there."

"What?"

"I said I'll be there in person to congratulate you both."

The words left me without heat, without tremor, steady as a line drawn through a ledger. He had gotten exactly the answer he wanted, yet there wasn't a trace of triumph or pleasure in his eyes. Something else flickered there instead, something quick and startled that he smothered before it could be named, and his hand tightened once around the rosary bead before releasing it.

I turned to leave. His hand landed on my shoulder without warning.

His fingers pressed through the thin wool of my cardigan and found the ridge of my collarbone, and the contact sent a jolt through me that I disguised as a half-step forward, nothing more. I stopped. I did not flinch. I had learned that flinching in the DeLuca house was an invitation for the walls to close in tighter.

I blinked and asked, polite, distant:

"Is there anything else you need to tell me?"

After a long silence, long enough for the espresso machine in the far kitchen to cycle through its rest-state click and hum, Dante spoke as though granting me a great favor:

"Don't cook tonight. I'll take you out."

I didn't answer. I watched him go upstairs to the bedroom, his silhouette disappearing past the carved balustrade, and I listened to his footsteps until they were absorbed by the thick runner on the second-floor hallway.

The moment the sound of running water came from behind the closed door, I picked up the luggage waiting in the corner and walked out of the estate without hesitation.

My thumb pressed hard against the bare skin of my ring finger as I crossed the courtyard, the gravel crunching beneath shoes I had chosen for silence rather than style, flat soles, soft leather, the kind of shoes a woman wears when she has already decided she will not be coming back. The soldiers at the gate were changing shift; the new pair had not yet settled into position. I passed through the gap in their attention the way smoke passes through a cracked window, and I did not look back at the limestone façade or the black shutters or the garden where, three years ago, Dante DeLuca had placed a ring on my finger and called the union blessed before a priest who answered to his family's consigliere.

I made it only a few steps past the perimeter wall before I saw Serafina, her eyes ice-cold.

She leaned against the hood of the pearl-white sports car Dante had gifted her, arms folded, her dark hair catching the late-afternoon light in a way that made her look like a magazine cover and a crime scene at the same time. She glanced at my luggage and curled her lip into a sneer.

"Bianca, I was wondering why you've been so quiet and gracious lately. Turns out you thought running away from home would be enough to ruin my wedding with Dante."

Her index fingernail gave one small scrape along the car key she held, a tiny, instinctive gesture, as though the sight of my suitcase had forced her to improvise a script she hadn't fully rehearsed.

"Too bad you still don't know, do you? Dante and I never use protection. He's just waiting for me to get pregnant with his baby so he can finally throw you, his boring little has-been wife, out the door for good."

Every word was aimed with the precision of a woman who understood that in this world, an heir was not a child but a weapon, a blood claim that could dissolve an alliance marriage faster than any petition before the Commission. I listened to every word of Serafina's little boast, my face as blank as the limestone wall behind me, and then I walked past her without a sound, moving fast.

My silence enraged her. I heard the click of her heels, sharp and furious on the pavement, and then the growl of the engine as she climbed into the sports car and slammed the gas pedal to the floor.

The world spun.

Tires screamed against asphalt. The impact came from the side, a blunt, annihilating force that lifted me off my feet and threw me into a darkness that tasted of iron and hot rubber. I hit the ground and the sky cracked open above me, white and distant, and the gravel bit into the side of my face like a scattering of tiny teeth.

Blood pouring from my head, I heard Dante's voice:

"Bianca!"

The shout tore through the evening air with a rawness I had never heard from him, not in boardrooms, not in sit-downs, not even on the night he had struck the table hard enough to split the mahogany and told his capos that disobedience would be answered in kind. For one fraction of a second, the Don was gone and there was only a man running barefoot across gravel, his shirt still damp from the shower, his face stripped of every mask he had ever worn in my presence.

One second before he reached me, Serafina's pitiful whimper rose right on cue:

"Dante, Serafina's foot is stuck in the bad car…"
