Unmasking My Husband's Mistress Chapter 1

I froze in the doorway of our bedroom, watching Leland adjust something on his shirt collar. The morning light streaming through our floor-to-ceiling windows caught the glint of metal—a delicate pin shaped like intertwined vines, elegant and expensive-looking. I'd never seen it before.

"That's new," I said, trying to keep my voice light as I approached. "The pin, I mean."

Leland's hand flew to his collar, fingers fumbling with the accessory. "Oh, this? It's just something from the gardening group. They gave it to me for my outstanding contributions to urban agriculture." His laugh sounded forced, hollow in our spacious bedroom.

I studied his face, searching for the warmth that used to be there when he looked at me. Instead, I found evasion. "A couple's pin? That seems like an odd choice for a gardening group gift."

"It's not a couple's pin," he said too quickly, then cleared his throat. "It's supposed to represent how plants grow together, supporting each other. Very symbolic of community gardening principles."

My gaze dropped to his wrist as he reached for his jacket. A Rolex gleamed against his skin—white gold, with a face I didn't recognize. The watch was stunning, clearly expensive, and definitely not the modest Seiko I'd given him for our second anniversary.

"And the watch?" The words came out sharper than I intended.

Leland's jaw tightened. "What is this, an interrogation? Can't I own nice things without you questioning every detail?" He shoved his arms into his jacket sleeves with unnecessary force. "I'm meeting Samara in twenty minutes to discuss her rooftop garden project. She's having issues with drainage, and I promised to help."

Samara. Always Samara. The name had become a constant presence in our conversations, like an unwelcome guest who'd overstayed their welcome. I watched him check his phone—again—the same secretive smile flickering across his features that appeared whenever her name lit up his screen.

"Right. Another gardening emergency." I couldn't hide the bitterness in my voice.

He paused at the bedroom door, finally meeting my eyes. For a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of guilt, but it vanished so quickly I wondered if I'd imagined it.

"Maddie, you're being paranoid again. Samara is just a friend who shares my passion for sustainable urban agriculture. I thought you'd be happy that I found something I'm genuinely passionate about."

The dismissal in his tone hit me like a physical blow. Paranoid. He'd been using that word more and more lately, making me question my own perceptions, my own sanity.

After he left, I stood alone in our bedroom, staring at my reflection in the full-length mirror. The woman looking back at me seemed smaller somehow, diminished. I touched my own jewelry—the simple gold necklace Leland had given me for our first anniversary, the modest diamond earrings from our wedding day. Everything pale in comparison to the accessories I'd just seen him wearing.

That evening, I was putting away Leland's dry cleaning when my fingers brushed against something crinkled in his jacket pocket. A receipt from Bella Notte, the upscale Italian restaurant downtown. My heart hammered as I unfolded the paper, noting the date—last Tuesday night, when he'd claimed to be at a "boring composting workshop."

Dinner for two. Osso buco. Barolo wine—a $200 bottle. Tiramisu to share. The total made my stomach clench: $400 for a meal he'd never mentioned, on a night he'd supposedly been learning about organic waste management.

I sank onto our bed, the receipt trembling in my hands. The timestamp showed 8:47 PM—exactly when he'd texted me about how tedious the workshop was and how he'd probably be home late because they were "really diving deep into nitrogen ratios."

My phone buzzed with a text from Leland: *Running late with Samara. Her drainage system is more complicated than we thought. Don't wait up.*

I stared at the message, then at the receipt, then back at the message. The lie sat there, stark and undeniable, in black and white.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I lay in our king-sized bed, listening to Leland's steady breathing when he finally came home at nearly midnight, smelling faintly of perfume that wasn't mine. My mind raced with questions I was afraid to ask and answers I wasn't sure I wanted to hear.

By morning, I'd made a decision. If Leland wouldn't tell me the truth, I'd find it myself.

I waited until he left for work, then opened my laptop with shaking fingers. Samara Griffin's social media profiles loaded slowly, each image a small knife to my chest. There she was—beautiful, vibrant, surrounded by lush plants and expensive gifts that made my breath catch in my throat.

A platinum necklace that looked remarkably similar to my gold one, only clearly more expensive. Rare orchids in crystal vases where I had simple roses. And there, in her most recent post, was a designer watch—the same style as the Rolex I'd seen on Leland's wrist, but hers was rose gold with diamonds around the face.

The caption read: *Grateful for the special people in my life who see my worth. Some gifts aren't just objects—they're promises. 💕*

I stared at the screen until my eyes burned, the truth crystallizing with brutal clarity. Every gift Leland had ever given me had been a practice run, a rough draft. Samara was getting the final versions—the upgraded, premium editions of our entire relationship.
