After His Mistress Helped Destroy My Wolf Chapter 1

I used to think the worst thing that could happen to a wolf was losing her mate. I was wrong. The worst thing is discovering you never had one to begin with.

The email arrived on a Tuesday afternoon while I was grading freshman essays on my living room couch. Barnaby lay at my feet, his golden head resting on his paws, watching the front door with that particular intensity he always had when Devon was due home. I'd stopped trying to understand why my dog hated my husband. Dogs had instincts humans didn't. I told myself it was territorial. Male energy. Something.

The subject line read: "You deserve to know."

No name. No signature. Just a video file and a single sentence: "I'm sorry. I should have sent this sooner."

I almost deleted it. Anonymous messages never brought good news. But something in that apology made me hesitate. The cursor hovered over the trash icon. Barnaby lifted his head and looked at me. His dark eyes were steady. Certain.

I clicked play.

The video opened on a dim VIP lounge, all leather and low lighting. The kind of place where pack elite gathered when they wanted privacy. I recognized the Ironveil crest on the wall before I recognized the man sitting beneath it.

Devon.

Except he wasn't Devon.

He sat sprawled in a chair, one arm draped over the back, his posture loose with the kind of confidence Devon never had. The cedar-and-rain scent I'd memorized wasn't visible on camera, but I knew it wasn't real anymore. I knew it before he even spoke.

"Three more weeks," he said, and his voice was different. Sharper. Colder. The voice of someone who gave orders and expected them obeyed. "Three more weeks and she'll be standing in front of the entire pack network, thinking the Moon Goddess finally blessed her. And I'll reject her in front of everyone."

Laughter rippled through the room. A woman's voice, bright and amused: "You really committed to this, Jared. I have to give you that."

Jared.

Not Devon. Jared Graham. Alpha of the Ironveil Pack. Son of the Lycan King who destroyed my life three years ago.

The camera shifted slightly, catching the woman beside him. Arabella Powell. I'd seen her at pack gatherings, always hovering near the Ironveil delegation, always watching. She leaned into Jared's shoulder, smiling like they were sharing a private joke.

"The scent-masking herbs were expensive," Jared continued, swirling something amber in a glass. "But worth every cent. She actually believes it. Believes we're fated." He laughed, low and satisfied. "Her wolf practically purrs when I walk in the room."

"And after the rejection?" someone off-camera asked.

"After?" Jared's smile widened. "After, she'll be exactly what she deserves to be. Broken. Wolfless. A cautionary tale for gold-diggers who think they can target Lycan royalty and walk away clean."

The video ended.

I sat very still. Barnaby pressed his nose against my knee, a soft whine building in his throat. Outside, a car door slammed. Devon—Jared—was home early.

I closed the laptop.

My hands were steady. That surprised me. I thought they'd shake. I thought I'd cry or scream or shatter something. But all I felt was a strange, cold clarity settling over me like frost.

I stood, smoothed my shirt, and walked to the door. Jared came in carrying takeout, his smile easy and warm. The cedar-and-rain scent wrapped around me, and for the first time, I noticed how it sat wrong. Too perfect. Too consistent. Real scents shifted with mood and health. This one never changed.

"Hey, sweetheart," he said, leaning in to kiss my cheek. "Got your favorite. Thai from that place on Fifth."

"Thank you," I said. My voice sounded normal. Grateful. "That's so thoughtful."

Barnaby growled from the doorway, low and steady.

Jared glanced at him, his expression flickering with something I'd never seen before. Irritation. Contempt. Then it smoothed back into Devon's gentle patience. "Still not a fan, huh, buddy?"

"He'll come around," I lied.

We ate dinner at the small kitchen table. Jared told me about his day—some fabricated story about meetings at the community center where he supposedly worked. I nodded in the right places. Asked the right questions. Laughed when he made a joke.

Inside, I was already making lists.

After he went to bed, I opened my laptop again and watched the video a second time. Then I opened a new document and began taking screenshots. Every frame. Every angle. Every face visible in that VIP lounge.

When I finished, I opened a legal pad and picked up the red pen I never lent to anyone. At the top of the first page, I wrote: "Things I Should Have Noticed."

The first item: Barnaby's growling. Every single time.

The second: The scent never changed. Not once in six months.

The third: Devon never introduced me to his family. Said they lived far away. Said we'd meet them at the wedding.

The list grew. Four pages. By the time I tore them out and folded them into my coat pocket, the sky outside was turning gray with dawn.

Jared's alarm went off upstairs. I heard him shower, dress, move through his morning routine. When he came downstairs, I was making coffee, the legal pad tucked safely away.

"Morning," he said, kissing the top of my head.

"Morning," I replied.

He left for pack business twenty minutes later. The door closed behind him. I waited until his car pulled out of the driveway, counted to sixty, then walked to my desk and started making calls.

First: my department chair at the university. "I need to discuss my resignation."

Second: the realtor who'd helped me buy this house. "How fast can you list a property?"

Third: my bank. "I'd like to open a new account. One with no joint access."

Barnaby sat beside me through every call, his warm weight pressed against my leg. When I finally set the phone down, I looked at him.

"You tried to tell me," I said quietly.

He licked my hand once. Then he walked to the door and sat, watching it with the same unwavering focus he always had.

Waiting for the wolf in Devon's clothing to come home.
