Chapter 6

Royal Wells frowned slightly, looking down at the little girl clamped to his leg like a tiny, stubborn magnet. His usual calm, stoic mask wavered in the face of this completely unexpected situation. He had no clue where the kid had come from, but she kept calling him “Daddy” with absolute certainty—clearly mistaking him for someone else.

“You shouldn’t just let a child cry like that. It’s not good for her,” one bystander said.

“Yeah, comfort her. Poor thing’s sobbing like that.”

“What kind of father ignores his own kid? Go on, comfort her!” others chimed in, their voices rising into a chorus of judgment against the tall, aloof man.

Royal’s frown deepened. A cold glint flashed in his eyes as he swept his gaze over the crowd. His intimidating presence shut them up fast. Reluctant or not, they sensed trouble and quickly backed off.

“Daddy, please find my brother. He’s missing, boo-hoo…” Aurora Wilson sobbed, her small body trembling with fear. Her face was flushed bright red, and even though the stern-looking man in front of her scared her, she clung to what Cesar had told her—this was their daddy, and she couldn’t let go.

“Stop crying,” Royal said, his voice sharp with impatience. Crying kids grated on his nerves, and he was a man who valued peace and quiet.

Aurora caught the edge in his voice and immediately stopped crying, though tears kept streaming down her cheeks. She was afraid that if she kept crying, he might leave her altogether.

“Daddy, please find my brother…” she pleaded, cautiously gripping Royal’s index finger. Her eyes were wet and imploring as she looked up at him.

Something inside Royal unexpectedly stirred—an unfamiliar flicker of pity, and tenderness. He usually avoided physical contact with others, but the small, chubby hand holding his finger didn’t repulse him. Strangely enough, he didn’t mind it.

“Daddy, please find my brother. And hold me? Please…” Aurora sensed the man wasn’t as hostile as before and bravely lifted her arms, silently asking him to pick her up.

Under some inexplicable pull, Royal bent down and lifted her into his arms. It was the first time in his twenty-nine years that he’d held a child. His hold was awkward, but as he felt the warmth of her small body against him, something inside him softened.

“Where did you last see your brother?” Royal asked as he carried Aurora to the hotel reception desk.

“He was sitting on that couch, and then he just vanished,” Aurora replied, one little arm wrapped securely around Royal’s neck as she pointed to where her brother had been.

“Mr. Wells.” The receptionist nodded respectfully at Royal.

“Pull up the surveillance footage. Find the boy,” Royal instructed coolly.

“Of course. The control room is this way.” The receptionist quickly led the way, eager to assist.

Meanwhile, Houston Arnold burst through the hotel doors, scanning the crowd for his boss’s tall figure. When he spotted the adorable child in Royal’s arms, he felt as if the world had just flipped upside down.

He’d assumed Mrs. Wells was making a fuss again—only to discover there really was a child. How could Mr. Wells have a kid, especially one this old, without Houston knowing?

Pushing his shock aside, Houston hurried to catch up. “Mr. Wells, ma’am insists you bring both yourself and the child home immediately, or she will…”

“Or else she’ll kill…” Royal let the threat hang unfinished, glancing at the small figure in his arms. It wasn’t appropriate to discuss this in front of a child.

“I’ll take her,” Houston offered, reaching for the little girl. He knew his boss hated physical contact with other people.

“No! I want Daddy to hold me!” Aurora clung tightly to Royal’s neck, pressing her tear-streaked face against him.

Houston’s eyes widened in disbelief. Didn’t this little girl know Mr. Wells was a severe germaphobe? Yet Royal seemed completely unfazed, adjusting his hold on the child as they walked to the control room.

At that moment, Royal’s phone rang. Seeing his father’s number, he guessed his mother had already filled him in. He chose not to answer and let it ring out. Shortly after, Houston’s phone buzzed in his pocket.

Houston sighed internally. Unlike Mr. Wells, he couldn’t ignore a call from the man’s father. Reluctantly, he answered and put it on speaker.

“Bring them back home no matter what!” Mr. Wells Sr.’s booming voice commanded furiously.

“Yes! Houston, you heard that, right? If necessary, knock him out and bring him back! Just don’t hurt the child!” Mrs. Wells’s voice followed, urgent and excited.

Royal’s frown deepened, his displeasure obvious. “The child isn’t mine. I can’t just take some random kid home. That’s kidnapping—and it’s illegal.”

“Grandpa and Grandma, don’t worry. Once Daddy and I find my brother, we’ll head right home, okay?” Aurora chimed in sweetly, clearly guessing who the callers were. Her tone was full of innocence and charm.

Hearing the child’s adorable voice, Mr. and Mrs. Wells’s hearts melted instantly.

“All right, we’ll be waiting at home!” Mrs. Wells replied, unable to hide her delight. Her voice was softer than Royal had ever heard her use with him.

After the call ended, Royal looked down at Aurora, who suddenly seemed less daunting. For some reason, he couldn’t bring himself to be angry or dismissive of her.

He hadn’t known he had such a soft spot.

“Once we find your brother, we’ll contact your parents,” Royal said coolly, his voice and demeanor still aloof.

“But you are our daddy!” Aurora insisted, blinking her big eyes, still glistening with unshed tears. She had absolute faith in Cesar’s words, her expression earnest and sincere.

Royal was good at reading people, and he could tell the little girl wasn’t lying.

“Who told you I’m your dad?” he asked, his voice still cold, his frown deepening.

“My brother did!” Aurora replied proudly, her face lighting up with admiration. “My brother is really smart. If he says you’re our daddy, then it must be true—no mistake about it!”
