My Twin Brother Planted Drugs in My Locker—Then I Broke the Record He Tried to Steal

When I uncovered my twin brother's doping frame-up, he retaliated by planting banned pills in my locker. My father knew the truth but sacrificed my eligibility to protect the family name. So I turned over the evidence and walked away from the Carter legacy. Only Noah Blake—the boy I was raised to despise—stayed by my side, nursing a hidden injury. With my scholarship and senior season on the line, his mother runs my dream program. Choosing him risks everything; losing him means losing the only person who ever chose me.

Chapter 2

At exactly five in the morning, the main natatorium sat in heavy shadows.

Noah already stood beside Lane Six, his thumb hovering over a yellow stopwatch. "Get in. Low-intensity freestyle only."

I dropped my swim bag onto the damp tiles. "I need to hit my butterfly splits."

"You need to fix your right arm," he countered, pointing at the dark water. "Drop your elbow on the entry. You're tearing your rotator cuff every time you pull."

"I know how to swim my own stroke, Blake."

"Then why are you wincing before you even hit the water?"

I hated that he had noticed the injury before my own coach did. I had deleted Daniel's warning text on the drive over, but the words still sat in my head. Stay away from Blake. Ethan had sent three more messages before midnight, each one phrased like concern and each one ending with the same command.

I had come anyway. Not because I trusted Noah. Because for the first time in months, someone had looked at my shoulder and seen a body that needed protecting instead of a scholarship that needed preserving.

"Twenty minutes," I said. "You get twenty minutes. If this hurts worse, I leave."

"Deal."

I clamped my mouth shut and dove in.

For twenty minutes, I forced my elbow lower. The sharp pinch in my right shoulder dulled to a manageable ache. I pushed harder, catching the water cleaner, accelerating through the final turn. I touched the wall, gasping for air.

Noah clicked the stopwatch. "Faster than yesterday. Get out."

I gripped the gutter, blinking chlorine from my eyes. "What? No. Let me do another set."

"We're done for today."

"If Daniel saw that split, he'd make me do it again to prove it wasn't a fluke."

Noah tossed a towel at my head. "I'm not your dad. You're resting."

His refusal to push me felt entirely foreign. I climbed out, wrapping the towel tightly around my waist, watching him slide into the lane. Noah pushed off the wall, his stroke smooth until the third lap. His right hand suddenly slipped through the water, losing all power. He broke the surface, coughing.

I didn't laugh. I grabbed a foam kickboard and threw it into his lane.

"Cut your volume in half," I told him. "Our deal works both ways."

The heavy metal double doors banged open before he could answer. Ethan marched onto the deck, his captain's clipboard tucked under his arm. He stopped dead when he saw us.

"What is this?" Ethan demanded, his voice bouncing off the high ceiling.

"Coach Lena put him in my group," I explained, stepping between them.

Ethan ignored me, his eyes locked on Noah. "Did Dad know you came early with him?"

"Dad doesn't track my morning alarms," I said.

"He tracks who you associate with."

"I'm swimming, Ethan. Not joining a gang."

Noah hoisted himself out of the pool, water dripping from his gray swim jammers. He grabbed his shirt off the bleachers.

"Getting caught once wasn't enough for you?" Ethan sneered. "Have to drag my sister down too?"

Noah stopped wiping his face. "Then ask yourself who filed the report."

I whipped my head toward my brother. Ethan's jaw tightened, but he didn't deny it.

"He loves blaming his failures on everyone else," Ethan told me, pointing a rigid finger at Noah's chest. "Don't let a drug cheat use you, Maya."

Noah didn't raise his voice. He didn't argue. He just walked past my brother, stopping briefly at my swim bag. He shoved a folded piece of paper into the spiral binding of my training log.

"Check the dates yourself, Maya," Noah said, pushing through the exit doors.

Two hours later, Daniel tapped his phone screen against the granite kitchen island.

"Your shoulder is fine," my dad announced, examining the new split I uploaded to the team app. "I'm scheduling a full-intensity sprint set for this weekend."

He slid a white prescription bottle across the counter. The legal painkillers his private doctor prescribed rattled against the plastic.

"Take two before practice," Daniel instructed.

"The bottle says take one," I replied.

"The bottle is for regular people. You're an elite athlete."

I didn't reach for the pills. "Why haven't we given my six-month MRI results to the school trainer?"

Daniel stopped chewing his toast. "Scouts care about who races senior year, Maya. Not who rests the best."

"It hurts to lift my arm, Dad."

"Don't ruin a four-year plan over a little pain."

I glanced at the opposite end of the table. Ethan scraped eggs off his plate, his eyes fixed on his fork. He didn't mention the pool. He didn't mention Noah.

For years, I thought Daniel hiding my medical records was his way of protecting me. Looking at the pill bottle, a cold realization settled in my stomach. He wasn't protecting my body. He was protecting my times.

I grabbed my backpack and headed straight for my bedroom.

I locked the door and pulled Noah's folded paper from my logbook. It was a photocopy of the disqualification notice from two years ago. The ink was faded, but the details were clear.

Next to the disputed drug, someone had written asthma treatment.

The medical clearance box was checked.

The timestamp on the clearance was dated exactly one day before the anonymous tip was filed.

My phone buzzed on the mattress.

A text from Noah popped onto the screen. It was a screenshot of an email timestamp.

The anonymous doping tip had been submitted exactly twenty minutes after Ethan lost the national finals.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard. I waited for Ethan to text, for him to explain, for anything to make sense.

Noah's second message appeared.

I transferred here because somebody in your family knew that clearance existed.

I stared at the words your family. My chest tightened. I didn't delete the photo. I didn't type out a defense for my brother.

I hit reply. Prove it.

Three seconds later, Noah sent the address of the old municipal aquatic center on the edge of town, followed by a final text.

Tomorrow at noon. Bring whatever version of your brother you still believe in.
