Chapter 2

The sharp click of designer heels echoed down the sterile corridor before I even saw them.

Ethan rounded the corner, still wearing the bespoke charcoal suit from the livestream. His tie was loosened, his jaw tight with fury. Right behind him was Ava, draped in her immaculate white silk dress, clutching a miniature designer handbag.

Ethan didn't look toward the recovery bay. He didn't ask how Lily was breathing, or if the prep team had managed to place the arterial line in her fragile wrist.

He came straight for me.

"What the hell did you just do, Nora?" he demanded, stopping inches from my face. "I get an automated alert saying my credentials have been revoked. Why the hell is Julian Cross listed on my daughter's medical chart?"

I didn't blink. "Because Julian paid the bill you stole from."

Ethan scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. "Nobody stole anything. It was a temporary liquidity reallocation. The escrow account was sitting on cleared cash, and Sinclair Wellness needed an immediate institutional margin to close the tier-one press contracts."

"That money was locked for open-heart surgery," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "The team was scrubbed in. They were thirty seconds away from canceling her procedure and giving away her slot."

"Then you should have delayed it!" Ethan barked, his voice carrying down the hall. Several passing nurses turned to stare. "You reschedule for two or three weeks from now. Ava’s platform is launching today. This venture is securing the entire future of this family, Nora. A few weeks makes zero difference to Lily's timeline."

"Dr. Keller told you to your face that scar tissue would make her defect inoperable by the end of the month," I said, stepping closer. "You knew that. You chose Ava's photo op anyway."

Ava stepped forward, putting a manicured hand on Ethan's forearm in a smooth, soothing gesture.

"Nora, please," Ava said, offering a soft, pitying smile. "Ethan is under an immense amount of pressure right now. Everyone at PulsePoint knows how much you’ve sacrificed, but you’re being emotional. Let me go in and comfort Lily for a minute. Poor thing shouldn't have to hear all this shouting before surgery."

Ava turned toward the heavy double doors leading to the sterile pre-op bay. She actually reached for the handle.

"Don't touch that door," I said.

Ava paused, her delicate brow furrowing. "Nora, I'm just trying to help—"

"Nurse," I called out, turning toward the administrative station.

The head nurse looked up from her monitors immediately.

"Hospital policy," I stated clearly. "Pre-op holding is restricted strictly to verified legal guardians and surgical staff. That woman is not family. She has no authorization to be in this wing. If she takes one step past that yellow line, call hospital security."

The nurse stepped out from behind the desk, her posture stiffening. "Ma'am, you need to remain in the outer lobby. Only the registered parent is permitted through those doors."

Ava's polished facade slipped for a fraction of a second. A flash of sharp humiliation sparked in her eyes before she quickly masked it, stepping back toward Ethan.

"Ethan..." Ava whispered, her voice trembling with manufactured distress. "I was only trying to be there for your daughter."

Ethan’s face darkened with ugly rage. He glared at me as if I were a stranger who had crossed him in a boardroom.

"You don't talk to her like that," Ethan snapped. "And you don't call security on my guests. If Cross gets to stay on this floor, Ava stays. That's the deal."

"Julian is the guarantor funding the surgery you abandoned," I answered, keeping my tone ice-cold. "Ava is your mistress playing dress-up with my patent."

"Nora!" Ethan growled.

"Make your choice, Ethan," I said, gesturing toward the doors. "Dr. Keller is rolling Lily into the operating room in two minutes. You have one hundred and twenty seconds to wash your hands, put on a mask, and tell your daughter goodbye before they cut her chest open. She asked if her daddy would be here when she woke up."

Ethan froze. His gaze flicked to the doors, then back to me, the veins in his neck bulging.

Beside him, Ava checked her diamond-encrusted watch and gave a subtle tug on his sleeve. "Ethan... the Bloomberg follow-up interview is in twenty minutes. The broadcast van is already parked outside the St. Regis."

Ethan looked down at Ava, then back at the closed doors.

There was no agony in his eyes. No heartbreak. Only irritated calculation.

"You're being completely irrational, Nora," Ethan said, straightening his cuffs. "I’m not playing this petty game with you. When Lily is out of the OR, you and I are having a very serious legal conversation about Cross's interference. Ava, let’s go."

He turned on his heel.

He didn't look back. He didn't ask what room she'd be in when she woke up. He walked side by side with Ava toward the elevators, their matching strides brisk and purposeful, leaving his six-year-old daughter behind for a cable news segment.

My chest hitched once, but no tears came. The last shred of grief I had carried for this marriage evaporated into cold, pure steel.

"Mrs. Vance?" Dr. Keller's assistant stepped out from the double doors, masked and gowned. "We're wheeling her in now."

"I'm here," I said softly.

I walked into the prep bay for thirty seconds. Lily was already drowsy from the preliminary sedative, her tiny fingers clutching the worn stuffed rabbit.

"Mommy..." she murmured, her eyelids fluttering.

"I'm right here, sweet girl," I whispered, kissing her warm forehead. "You're so brave. Mommy will be right outside the whole time."

"Love you," she breathed as the orderly unlocked the gurney wheels.

"I love you more than the whole world."

The doors hissed open, and they rolled her toward Operating Room 4.

I stepped back out into the waiting corridor, my back pressed against the pale wall.

A few yards away, standing quietly beside the reception desk, was Julian Cross.

He wore a tailored dark overcoat, tall and imposing, his presence commanding without needing to say a word. He hadn't stepped in during Ethan's outburst. He hadn't gloated, and he hadn't tried to close the physical distance between us to take advantage of my vulnerability.

He had simply stood there, pen in hand, completing the final administrative signatures on the five-hundred-thousand-dollar guarantee to ensure the hospital couldn't pull the plug.

Seeing him there pulled a memory out of the depths of my mind—one I had buried for nearly a decade.

Eight years ago.

A rainy terrace outside a tech accelerator in Boston. Ethan had just presented the foundational architecture for PulsePoint's core algorithm under his own name, promising me it was purely for venture funding optics and that we would share everything once the round closed.

Julian had tracked me down in the rain that night. He had seen through Ethan immediately.

*He's using you, Nora,* Julian had said, his voice raw with an intensity that had terrified me back then. *He doesn't love the science, and he doesn't love you. Leave him. Build the platform with me. Let me protect you. I love you, Nora.*

I had thought Julian was trying to tear us apart out of corporate rivalry. I had defended Ethan. I had told Julian I was marrying the man who believed in me, and I walked away.

For eight years, Julian had respected that boundary. He had never crossed the line, and after I turned down his business offer two years ago, he hadn't contacted me again until I dialed his number forty minutes ago in utter desperation.

Julian handed the digital tablet back to the receptionist. He turned toward me, his dark eyes steady, watchful, and intensely patient.

Above us, the bright red light above the operating room doors clicked on.

*SURGERY IN PROGRESS.*

I pushed myself off the wall and walked straight up to him.

Julian looked down at me, his voice low and quiet. "She's in the best hands in the country, Nora. The legal team has locked the account. Ethan can't touch a single penny."

"I know," I said.

I looked into his eyes, feeling the last invisible chains of my past snap into dust.

"Julian."

"I'm here."

"Help me take back what I gave him."
