Chapter 3

Claire's POV

Two days after I left the house, Ethan texted me a photo.

My mother's ring sat in the center of his palm, the tiny nick on the band turned toward the camera like he knew exactly where to look.

A second message came right under it.

*Bennett Medical Devices charity gala, Saturday at eight. Apologize to Audrey in front of everyone, and it's yours.*

Then a third.

*One apology, Claire. That's all it takes to get your mother's ring back.*

I stared at the screen until it dimmed. Then I opened the motel closet and took out the only formal dress I'd packed, a loose black sheath that didn't touch my stitches.

I'd gone for my scheduled follow-up bloodwork that afternoon. By Saturday night, standing up straight still took a slow breath first.

The ballroom at the Grand Meridian glittered with crystal and candlelight. A banner stretched across the entrance in silver script. *Celebrating a Second Chance.*

Beside it stood a photo wall, ten feet high. Ethan laughing on the hospital steps. Ethan in a suit, flushed and healthy, raising a glass. Ethan with his arm around Audrey.

I remembered the real version. Him shuffling down the transplant ward at midnight, gripping his IV pole, the wheels squeaking on the linoleum. Me on his other side, one hand under his elbow, counting steps with him. Ten more. Five more.

*Every day worth celebrating,* he'd said, sweating and gray, *I want you there for it. Every single one.*

I was here. Just not the way he'd meant.

I took a spot in the last row, near the doors, and kept one hand pressed lightly against my side.

The lights dimmed. A screen behind the stage flickered on, filling the room with a slow pan across the words *Honoring the Gift of Life.*

"Please welcome," the emcee said, "a woman whose courage reminds us what love really looks like. Audrey Lane."

The applause was thunderous.

Audrey climbed the steps in a pale gold gown, one hand on Ethan's arm. The emcee handed her a crystal trophy shaped like a flame. She cradled it against her chest and lifted her bandaged wrist so the cameras could catch it.

Flashes went off like a storm.

"I didn't think of myself as brave," she said into the microphone, her voice trembling just enough. "The doctors told me the risks. They told me I might not wake up. But I would give up anything to see Ethan alive and happy. Even a part of my own body."

Someone near me sniffled.

My incision throbbed with every burst of clapping, a deep, hot ache that seemed to pulse with my heartbeat.

Ethan stepped forward with a black velvet box. He opened it, and the room gasped. A diamond necklace, heavy and blazing under the stage lights.

He fastened it around Audrey's throat. She reached up to touch it, and that was when I saw her left hand.

My mother's ring was still on her finger.

He'd never brought it. He'd never planned to.

The photo hadn't been an offer. It had been bait. He didn't want an apology for Audrey's sake. He wanted me standing in front of his investors and his family, saying out loud that she was the one who'd saved him, so no one would ever believe anything else.

Ethan leaned into the microphone.

"Before we eat, I want to say something personal." He squeezed Audrey's waist. "This year, I almost died. And it showed me who really stands beside me. So I'm ending my marriage to Claire, and starting my life over with the person who earned it."

People clapped. Some of them actually cheered.

Audrey threw her arms around his neck. Then she pulled back, eyes shining, and searched the crowd until she found me.

"Claire's here," she said sweetly. "She told Ethan she wanted to apologize. Claire? Come on up."

Every head in the room turned.

I walked down the aisle slowly, because it was the only way I could walk. When I reached the edge of the stage, a photographer's light hit my face so brightly my eyes watered.

"Go ahead," Ethan said, holding the microphone out to me. "On your knees would be a nice start."

I didn't kneel.

I opened my clutch and took out a folded sheet of paper. My discharge summary from St. Mary's Transplant Center. I held it up to him.

"You don't have to believe me," I said quietly. "Just read the procedure and the date. That's all I'm asking."

His eyes flicked down. I watched them land on the line. *Living donor nephrectomy, left.* Then the date, the same morning as his transplant.

For one second, something moved in his face.

Then he took the paper out of my hand and tore it straight down the middle.

The rip was loud in the microphone. He tore it again and let the pieces fall.

"I'm done indulging your jealousy," he said into the mic. "You can fake documents, Claire. You can't fake what Audrey did for me. I choose her."

The murmurs started immediately.

"Wow, she actually forged hospital records?"

"Poor Audrey."

Three phones were raised at the front table, pointed right at me. A red recording dot glowed on one of them.

I looked down at the scraps of paper by my shoes. My surgeon's signature lay torn in half next to the toe of Ethan's polished loafer.

For two years, I'd believed that if I loved him enough, if I was patient enough, the truth would find its way to him on its own.

It wouldn't. He didn't want it to.

I turned around and walked out.

Nobody stopped me. The music started up again before I reached the doors.

The hallway outside the ballroom was empty and cool. I made it halfway to the elevators before my phone started ringing.

An unknown number with a hospital extension.

"Is this Claire Bennett? This is Megan from the transplant follow-up clinic. Your bloodwork from this afternoon just came back."

"Okay." My voice sounded far away.

"Your creatinine has spiked, and your white count is very high. Claire, your remaining kidney is showing signs of acute injury. You need to come to the ER immediately."

I leaned against the marble wall. It felt like ice against my bare shoulder blades, and only then did I realize how hot my skin was. I'd been shivering in the ballroom and blamed the air conditioning.

I pressed my fingers to my side through the dress. The skin around the incision was swollen and burning, tender enough that I bit down on my lip to keep quiet.

"Are you having any fever? Redness at the site?"

"Yes," I whispered. "Both."

"The doctor's worried about a post-op infection on top of the kidney injury. We need to evaluate you tonight. Do you have someone who can drive you?"

"I'll get a cab."

"Don't wait, Claire. Please."

She hung up. A notification sat on my screen in red: *LAB RESULT — URGENT.*

I opened the rideshare app. The map blurred. The chandelier lights down the hall stretched into long, smeared streaks, and the floor tilted under my heels.

My knees hit the marble.

The phone slipped from my hand and landed face up. Somehow my thumb had swiped it to the lock screen, to the medical ID page I'd filled out the week before surgery.

*Emergency Contact: Ethan Bennett. Husband.*

I stared at his name. Behind the ballroom doors, I could hear muffled laughter and the clink of glasses.

The screen lit up with a new message.

Ethan.

*Stop ruining Audrey's night.*

I pressed my palm flat against the cold floor and laughed, a broken little sound that hurt all the way down to the stitches.

I gave Ethan one kidney to keep him alive. Now the only one I had left was in danger, and he was telling me to stop ruining his mistress's night.
