Chapter 1

Claire's POV

Eighteen days after the surgery, I carried a pot of low-sodium chicken soup into our dining room with both hands.

Steam curled up from under the lid and fogged the edges of my vision. The waistband of my dress rubbed against my stitches with every step, a hot, raw scrape I kept telling myself to ignore. Ethan was finally strong enough to sit at the table. Tonight we were supposed to eat together like normal people again.

Then I stepped through the doorway and stopped.

The dining room was full. His aunt, his cousins, two of his business partners, all holding wine glasses. And in my chair, the one at the head of the table across from Ethan's, sat Audrey.

A strip of white gauze circled her wrist, wrapped so neatly it looked like it had been ironed. His aunt was patting her hand.

"You're so brave, sweetheart. Most people wouldn't do what you did."

Audrey lowered her lashes. "Anyone would have done it for Ethan."

Ethan stood, walked around the table, and slid his arm over her shoulders.

"Everyone, this is the woman who gave me a second chance at life. Audrey."

The room broke into applause.

A high ringing started in my ears. Three months ago, in the dialysis unit, Ethan had pressed his lips to my fingertips one at a time and said, *When I get through this, Claire, I'm going to take care of you for the rest of your life. I swear.*

Now he looked straight at me in the doorway, and his eyes slid right past my face as if I were the help.

"Claire. Good, you brought the soup. Put it down."

I set the pot on the table. My hands were shaking hard enough that the lid rattled.

That was when I saw her left hand.

A gold band sat on her ring finger. Thin, slightly worn on one side, with a tiny nick near the edge. I would have known it in the dark.

"That's my mother's wedding ring."

Audrey's fingers curled, but she didn't hide it.

Ethan answered for her. "I gave it to her. She sacrificed her health for me. She deserves the most precious thing in this house."

"It's engraved." My voice came out thin. "My father had it engraved for her. 'To Eleanor, Always.' My mother gave it to me two days before she died, Ethan. You were there."

"Audrey saved my life. She deserves more than an old piece of jewelry."

The aunt murmured something approving. Someone refilled a glass.

I held out my palm. "Give it back, Audrey."

She tilted her head and lifted her hand higher, out of my reach, letting the ring catch the chandelier light. "Ethan wanted me to have it. Isn't that his choice?"

Her handbag sat open on the chair beside her. A corner of pale blue paper stuck out of the side pocket.

My stomach turned over.

I knew that envelope. I'd bought it from the hospital gift shop the night before my surgery and written Ethan four pages, in case I couldn't tell him the truth myself. I had handed it to Audrey in the pre-op hallway because she'd squeezed my hand and promised to put it in his hands when he was strong enough to read it.

It was still sealed.

And suddenly the last three months lined up in front of me like evidence on a table. Ethan's phone always face down. The appointments he canceled at the last minute. The "board meetings" that ran until two in the morning. Audrey's car in our driveway on days I was too sick from testing to come downstairs.

"You never gave him the letter," I said.

Audrey's smile flickered. "What letter?"

"The blue one in your bag."

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Enough. You're embarrassing yourself in front of my family."

Something inside me snapped clean through.

I reached for the side of my dress and pulled the zipper down. The fabric fell open along my ribs, and I tugged the waistband lower so everyone at that table could see it. A long red incision, puckered and angry, still crusted along the edges, the skin around it bruised yellow.

His aunt gasped.

"The kidney in your body came from me, Ethan," I said. "Not from her. Me."

For a second, nobody breathed.

Then Audrey pressed both hands over her mouth. Her nails were perfect, a fresh glossy pink, not a single chip. Her voice shook beautifully.

"Claire, do you hate me that much? You'd try to steal this from me too?"

Ethan looked down at my scar.

I waited for it. For his face to crack, for him to remember the consent forms he'd been too sick to read, the doctors who wouldn't tell him the donor's name because I'd asked them not to. I wanted him to recover first, without guilt hanging over him.

Instead, his lip curled. He took a step back, like the wound might be contagious.

"Do you seriously expect me to believe that scar means you gave me a kidney? How desperate can you be?"

"Ask the hospital."

"Audrey already showed me the paperwork. You probably got that from some cosmetic procedure and decided to use it." He shook his head. "God, Claire. That's disgusting."

On our wedding night, he'd traced my stomach with his thumb and said, *Whatever happens to you, whatever you look like in fifty years, you'll always be beautiful to me.*

Now he was staring at the one scar I'd earned for him, and all he felt was revulsion.

My fingers twisted into the hem of my dress until the fabric crumpled.

Audrey sighed softly and slipped the ring off her finger. "Fine. If it means this much to her."

She held it out. I reached for it.

She opened her fingers a half second too early.

The ring hit the edge of the table, bounced, and rolled underneath, a small gold spin across the marble before it vanished into the shadows by the table leg.

I didn't think. I bent down after it.

Pain ripped through my abdomen like the stitches had torn open all at once. My legs gave, and both knees slammed onto the cold marble tile with a crack that echoed through the room. I hunched over, one hand pressed to my side, the other stretching blindly under the table until my fingers closed around the ring.

Above me, Ethan's voice softened with satisfaction. He thought I'd finally given in.

"That's more like it." His shoes stopped in front of me. "Now get on your knees and thank her properly. Without Audrey, I'd be dead."

Laughter rippled somewhere behind him. Someone said, "About time."

I gripped the table leg and pulled myself up, inch by inch, sweat breaking out along my hairline. My knees throbbed. I kept the ring locked in my fist so tightly the edge bit into my palm.

When I was standing, I looked him in the eye.

"You have no idea what you're thanking her for."

He grabbed my wrist and pried my fingers open. I fought him, but I had nothing left. He plucked the ring from my palm, turned, and placed it in Audrey's waiting hand like he was proposing.

Then he raised his voice to the room.

"I've made a decision. I'm going to marry the woman who actually saved me."

His family started clapping again.

I stared at his left hand, at the pale band of skin where his wedding ring used to sit. I hadn't even noticed when he'd stopped wearing it.

I didn't say another word. There was nothing left to explain to a man who'd already chosen not to see.

Ethan glanced back at me, almost as an afterthought.

"Pack your things tomorrow. Audrey's moving into the master bedroom, and I want it cleared out before she gets there."
