Chapter 3

The next morning the air in the Carter house felt too still, as if even the climate control had decided to keep its head down. I’d barely touched the breakfast tray the housekeeper brought when Luke appeared in the doorway. Perfect suit, cufflinks glinting, eyes unreadable.

“Get dressed,” he said. “We have a charity auction to attend.”

My throat tightened. “After last night?”

His brow twitched—impatience disguised as a smile. “Optics, Anna. We walk in together, we look untouchable. End of discussion.”

The ballroom of the Grant Hotel was a temple to wealth—gilded crown moldings, champagne towers, and conversations that sounded like contracts. We arrived to camera flashes and polite applause. Luke’s hand settled on my back, but it was Vivian he seated beside him, sliding into the place where a wife should be.

I sat one chair down, invisible but with the best view of the show. Vivian leaned in, hand brushing his thigh under the tablecloth. Luke smirked, never taking his eyes off her. Whenever she admired something—a diamond bracelet, a bottle of vintage Bordeaux—he lifted his paddle. SOLD. Applause. Laughter.

The whispers started almost immediately.

“Isn’t that his wife?”

“Pretty sure the sister’s the one he actually wants.”

“Rich men don’t change. They just get bolder.”

I kept my gaze fixed on the auctioneer.

Then came Lot Thirty-Two.

The woman in white gloves approached with a tray. On it lay a piece of linen under glass—delicate, hand-stitched, and stained in a way the entire room understood instantly.

The auctioneer’s grin sharpened. “A very… intimate keepsake from one of our city’s most famous couples. Opening bid, five thousand.”

My chest turned to ice. I recognized the fabric instantly—it was the one Luke had used the night of our wedding, the one he’d folded and pocketed like a promise.

“Ten,” someone called.

“Fifteen.”

I raised my paddle. “Fifty.”

Heads swiveled toward me. Vivian’s painted lips twitched into a smirk. Luke didn’t even glance my way.

“Seventy.”

“Ninety.”

“One hundred,” I snapped.

The bids climbed like a countdown I couldn’t stop. I opened my banking app under the table—Transaction declined. Account restricted.

I looked at Luke.

He took a slow sip of champagne. “Relax, Anna. It’s just a piece of cloth. Save the drama.”

The hammer fell at two-fifty to a man whose leer made my skin crawl. He lifted the glass case, inhaling like it was perfume, and turned to grin at me.

“Before we move on,” the auctioneer announced, “our donor has provided a short film.”

The lights dimmed.

The LED wall came alive with a high-definition nightmare—me, on our wedding night, half-draped in silk, head thrown back, eyes closed. No sound, only image.

The room froze. Then came the murmurs, rising like a tide.

“Didn’t know she had it in her.”

“Guess the Ice Queen melts.”

“Wonder how much for the full video.”

The bile rose fast. I shoved my chair back. “Turn it off!”

Security moved toward me, smiling their polite ma’am please smiles. Luke stayed in his seat, arm draped over Vivian’s chair, eyes hooded.

Out in the corridor, the bass from the ballroom thumped through the walls like a second heartbeat. Luke strolled out a minute later, adjusting his cufflinks.

“What the hell was that?” My voice shook, but the words cut sharp.

“It’s just a few minutes of film,” he said. “You’ll live.”

“You filmed me without consent.”

He met my eyes then—cool, deliberate. “You wanted me to believe you didn’t leak Vivian’s photos? Consider us even.”

Even. As if humiliation could balance humiliation. As if this was math.

When we left the hotel, the rain was biblical. Luke flagged a car and guided Vivian into the back seat. She kissed his cheek like a trophy presentation.

“You wait here,” he told me. “I’ll come back.”

No phone. No keys. No Luke. Just me, barefoot under the awning, watching the city wash itself down the drains.

That’s when I felt eyes on me. A man stepped out of the shadows—filthy jeans, rotting teeth. His smile was all appetite.

“Recognized you from the net,” he said, coming too close. “You don’t look so icy now.”

I stepped back. He stepped forward. His hand clamped my arm.

Headlights flared. A car braked hard at the curb. The passenger door swung open and a man got out, moving fast, shoving the attacker back with one clean push.

“Let her go,” the man said.

It took me a moment to place the voice. Ryan Cooper. My ex-fiancé.

By the time he dropped me at the Carter estate, Vivian was already on the porch in a silk robe, eyes wide with mock concern. Behind her, Luke’s mother stood like a judge ready to read the verdict.

“Second night of marriage,” Sonia said, “and you come home with another man. The shame you’ve brought—”

Vivian stepped forward, voice soft enough to sound sincere. “Luke waited all night, Anna. You should explain.”

Luke stood in the foyer’s shadow, watching. Waiting.

I walked past all of them without a word, the marble cold under my wet feet. Upstairs, in the quiet, I locked the door and sat on the edge of the bed.

Somewhere below, three voices murmured—the mother’s scorn, the sister’s sweetness, the husband’s silence.

I didn’t know which would break me first.
