Time steeps rain, waits for aftertaste to bloom

Surrounded by the delicate fragrance of fresh roses and the sweet sting of champagne, the chapel is set for a perfect celebration. Yet, beneath the beautiful facade of this joyous occasion lies a bittersweet truth. The radiant smile gracing the bride's face is nothing more than a carefully crafted mask. In this poignant modern romance, a seemingly grand day is shadowed by hidden emotions, where the vows spoken might be beautiful, but the reality behind them is far more complex.

Chapter 4

The next morning, the house didn’t wake up gentle.

Two of Luke’s security men were already in my room when I opened my eyes, their black suits blotting out the sunlight. One held a leather strap coiled in his fist.

“Orders,” he said flatly.

They marched me down the grand staircase, past the oil portraits and the vase I’d knocked over on my wedding night, into the marble-floored atrium where the chandeliers blazed.

Luke’s mother, Sonia, stood at the center like she was presiding over a trial. Vivian lingered at her side, a vision in pastel silk and crocodile tears. Luke was there too, but he didn’t meet my eyes.

“Second night of marriage,” Sonia said, “and the city is talking about a Carter wife spreading her legs for another man. You’ve dragged our name through the gutter. This—” she gestured to the strap—“is a lesson in consequence.”

Two cameramen stepped forward. Not security—media. Live feed.

I froze. “You’re broadcasting this?”

Vivian’s voice slid in like a knife. “Transparency, sister. The public loves it when the powerful hold their own accountable.”

Sonia gave a curt nod. “Do it.”

The first lash burned across my shoulders, hot enough to steal my breath. The second broke skin. I doubled forward, but the men yanked me upright. By the tenth, my vision was flickering. By the thirtieth, the taste of copper filled my mouth. Somewhere around seventy, I wasn’t sure if the sound in my ears was the whip or my pulse.

Through the haze, I saw Luke move—one step forward, then stopping as if someone invisible had pulled a leash. His jaw clenched, his hands flexed. But he didn’t stop it. Not for me.

The ninety-ninth crack sounded like a gunshot. I collapsed to the cold marble, my skin a map of pain.

When I woke, it was to the faint scent of antiseptic and the low hum of the house. My arms were swaddled in gauze. Luke sat at the edge of the bed, eyes red-rimmed, his hair disheveled like he’d been dragging his hands through it for hours.

“Anna,” he said quietly, “you were out for three days.”

His voice almost sounded like the Luke from… before. The one who had died for me.

I stared at him. “Why?”

He didn’t answer. His phone rang, and his expression hardened. He stepped into the hall. Through the crack in the door, I heard voices—two maids gossiping.

“…Mr. Carter was frantic when Vivian cut her hand last month. Flew in a specialist. But this one—” one maid tilted her head toward my room “—damn near died and he barely called a doctor.”

“Shows you who he cares about,” the other said.

The words settled like stones in my gut.

Two days later, my father’s number lit my phone.

“It’s my sixtieth,” he said, voice brisk. “You and Luke will be here. No excuses.”

Luke didn’t show. I went alone.

The moment I stepped into the banquet hall, my father’s palm cracked against my cheek.

“You heartless girl,” he barked. “How dare you have Vivian’s mother kidnapped?”

I blinked. “What—?”

Luke was there after all, sliding in from the side, one arm around Vivian’s shaking shoulders.

“Anna,” he said coldly, “I’ve been patient. But this—”

Vivian buried her face in his chest. “I begged her to stop, Luke. I told her I’d leave if it made her jealous. But she wanted to hurt my mom.”

My father shoved a phone in my hand. On the screen: grainy video of me climbing into a van.

“That’s not me,” I said, but my voice cracked. “This is fake. I was at home—”

Luke’s fingers clamped my chin, forcing me to look at him. “Where is she, Anna?”

“I don’t know—”

“Then maybe,” he said softly, “you’ll care if it’s your mother’s turn.”

That night, they dug up my mother’s grave.

I was dragged to the cemetery under a sky the color of old bruises. Luke stood by the open pit, holding the urn above a concrete tank that stank like sewage.

“You tell me where Vivian’s mother is,” he said, “or this goes in.”

My knees hit the ground hard enough to jar my teeth. “Please—Luke—don’t.”

He tipped the urn just enough for a trickle of ashes to fall. The wind caught them, scattering what was left of her into the darkness.

My voice broke. “I didn’t—”

“Then give me a reason to believe you,” he said.

There wasn’t one he wanted to hear.
