Chapter 3

"I cannot find the green dinosaur cup!" Adam shouted from the kitchen, the sound of slamming cabinet doors echoing up the stairs. "Claire? Did you put it in the dishwasher?"

I sat on the edge of the guest bed, tying my sneakers. I didn't walk out to the landing.

"Look in the drying rack," I called back, keeping my voice even.

A loud clatter followed, then a heavy sigh. "It's not here! Come down and help me look."

"Then he takes the blue one."

Footsteps stomped to the bottom of the stairs. Adam appeared at the base of the railing, holding a half-packed lunchbox.

"Where are his backup allergy pills?" Adam asked, his tone laced with irritation. "The school needs a new pack today. You usually have this stuff ready by the door."

I picked up my phone, tapped the shared family drive, and forwarded the medical document directly to his number.

"Top shelf of the pantry, behind the cereal," I said. "I just emailed you the school forms."

Adam stared up at me, waiting for me to take the lunchbox from him.

"Are you really punishing us over a turkey?"

"I gave you the pills and the forms. Pack the bag."

He retreated to the kitchen. I stayed upstairs.

Small, hurried steps approached my door. Finn pushed it open, his backpack hanging awkwardly off one shoulder.

"Why aren't you taking me to school, Mommy?" he asked, his lower lip trembling.

I knelt on the floor, adjusting his slipping strap. "Daddy is in charge of morning drop-off today. I will see you exactly at four o'clock."

"But you always take me."

"Today is different." I kissed his forehead. "Have a good day at school."

Finn stared at me, his small face twisting in confusion. He realized, perhaps for the first time, that my love for him did not require me to manage his father's schedule.

At ten o'clock, I sat across from the family lawyer.

"I don't want a war over custody," I told the attorney, sliding my intake paperwork across the polished conference table. "I am not forcing a four-year-old to choose between his parents."

The lawyer reviewed the top page. "What is your immediate goal, Claire?"

"I just need to move out of the marital home today. I want to establish a rigid, predictable co-parenting schedule."

"Leaving the marital home can complicate possession and custody arguments," the lawyer warned. "Document what you take and what you leave."

"I will. I want a temporary fifty-fifty schedule in writing by Friday."

By noon, I stood inside the upstairs apartment at Bennett Table. The air smelled like old dust and floor wax.

Mara walked in behind me, dropping a stack of manila folders onto the small kitchen counter.

"Water and power are on," Mara said, flipping a light switch. The overhead bulb flickered, then held steady. "I pulled the business licenses and the vendor accounts from the last three years. Everything is active. You just need to fund the main account."

"I routed the money this morning," I said, running a hand over the chipped laminate counter. "It clears tomorrow."

Mara leaned against the sink. "Are you scared?"

"Yes. But I'm more scared of staying."

I returned to the house at two o'clock. Adam's car was gone.

I dragged three cardboard boxes into the bedroom. I packed my clothes, my work laptop, the original handwritten manuscript of my mother's recipes, and my personal tax documents. I left Finn's toys, his medical records, and the entire kitchen untouched.

In the dining room, I grabbed a small side table that belonged to my grandmother. As I tilted it, a stack of papers slid off the nearby sideboard. I caught most of them, but the thick red Bennett Holiday Binder slipped loose. It hit the floor and slid out of sight, wedged deep beneath the heavy mahogany baseboard.

I didn't notice. I just wanted to get out.

Finn's crying started the second he walked through the front door and saw the boxes stacked in the entryway.

"Are you leaving because I went to Aunt Rebecca's?" Finn sobbed, burying his face in my sweater. "I won't go anymore. I promise."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes. I knelt on the hardwood, gripping his small shoulders.

"Look at me, Finn," I said, making sure he met my eyes. "You did something that hurt me yesterday. But adult houses and marriages are handled by adults. You will never, ever lose Mommy over one sentence."

He sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "I want you to stay."

"You are sleeping here in your bed tonight," I told him, keeping my voice steady. "This weekend, you will come sleep at my new apartment. If you are ever scared, or sick, or need me at school, I am always your mother. That never changes."

Adam stood three steps away, his arms crossed over his chest. He shifted his weight, his confident posture cracking.

"You don't need to turn a Thanksgiving meal into moving out," Adam said, his voice tight. "This is a massive overreaction, Claire."

I stood up, releasing Finn's shoulders.

"I am not leaving over a meal, Adam," I said, looking straight into his eyes. "I am leaving because you still think you have the right to take."

"Take what? A few plates of food?"

"My time. My work. My dignity."

Adam opened his mouth, but no sound came out. I picked up the last box, walked out the front door, and let it click shut behind me.

At six o'clock, I dropped the final box onto the floor of the Bennett Table apartment.

I pulled out my phone and typed a message to Adam.

"Emergency issues require a phone call. Everyday parenting updates go in the shared family app. All other matters regarding our marriage will be handled via written email."

I hit send. I didn't wait for his reply. I didn't keep the screen unlocked, hoping Finn would call crying for me to come back.

I scrubbed the apartment's cabinet doors, set my mother's small brass lamp on the windowsill, and clicked it on. Warm light spread across the bare floorboards.

Sitting cross-legged beneath it, I wrote three former catering clients on a legal pad.

My phone buzzed against the floor.

Adam's name flashed on the screen. Less than twenty minutes had passed.

"What does Finn need to bring to school tomorrow?" the text read. "Where is the teacher's email? You didn't leave a list on the fridge."

I stared at the glowing letters. He wasn't asking because he couldn't find it. He was asking because he wanted me to fix the inconvenience of my absence. The house hadn't burned down. Finn was safe. Adam simply didn't want to look.

I typed my reply.

"In your own parent email inbox."

I set the phone aside and underlined the first client's name.

A sharp knock hit the steel door downstairs.

Then Adam's voice carried up the stairwell. "Claire, open the door. Something happened to your mother's silver."
