Chapter 4

"Rebecca is waiting down in the car," Adam said, dropping a dark blue velvet box onto my bare laminate counter. "She didn't want to intrude."

I pulled the lid open. Under the overhead bulb, my gaze went straight to the dinner fork in the far-left slot. Its heavy B-stamped handle bent sharply right, a jagged crack splitting the floral engraving.

"Nora grabbed it off the table after dinner," Adam offered quickly, taking a half-step back toward the door. "She was running around the living room, tripped over the rug, and landed directly on it. Rebecca feels terrible about the whole thing."

I didn't look up at him. I ran my index finger over the sharp, broken edge of the antique metal.

"When did this happen?" I asked.

"Thursday night. Right after we ate."

"It is Tuesday, Adam. Why are you just telling me now?"

"Because I knew you'd make a huge deal out of it." He crossed his arms, his jaw setting into a stubborn line. "I didn't want you to overreact before I had a chance to present a solution."

He stepped into the hallway and returned with a glossy mahogany chest, hauling it onto the counter beside my mother's box.

"Open it," he instructed.

I flicked the brass latches upward. Inside lay a gleaming, heavy-gauge silver service for twelve. Modern lines, unblemished surfaces, completely foreign.

"It's from the jeweler on 5th," Adam said, his chest puffing out slightly as he watched my face. "Better quality than the old set. More pieces, too. Since the old one got ruined, it makes the most sense to just upgrade."

I stared at the bent fork in my hand. My mother had used this exact piece at her bridal shower. She had polished it every Christmas Eve, sitting at the kitchen table while I watched.

"Silver isn’t silver when it belonged to someone," I said, setting the broken piece back into its velvet slot.

"Claire, the new set costs three times what that old stuff is worth."

I pushed the mahogany chest across the counter. The heavy wood scraped loudly against the surface, stopping right at the edge.

"Take it back," I told him. "I already found a restoration specialist in the diamond district who handles antique repairs."

Adam's face flushed red. "You're going to drag a broken fork across the city when you have a brand new, superior set sitting right in front of you?"

"You are paying the invoice," I continued, ignoring his outrage. "But I am the one who decides how it gets fixed."

"Are you going to punish everyone for the rest of our lives over a single piece of silverware?" he demanded, his voice echoing off the empty apartment walls.

"Why am I always the one who loses the right to choose?" I asked, keeping my tone dead flat. "And why are you always the one who gets to decide it doesn't matter?"

I picked up my phone from the counter. I snapped three clear photos of the damage, attached them to a new email, and added the silversmith's estimated invoice. I typed Adam's address into the recipient line and hit send.

His phone chimed. He stared at the damage report, confusion replacing the argument he had expected. I wasn't waiting for an apology. I was establishing a property record.

At five o'clock, Finn walked through the apartment door for his first overnight stay.

"Where is my big kitchen?" Finn asked, dropping his dinosaur backpack onto the floorboards.

He spun in a slow circle, taking in the cramped living area, the single futon, and the small window overlooking the alley.

"And Daddy's big TV isn't here," he added, his small brows pulling together.

"This is a smaller place," I said, hanging his winter coat on a wall hook. "We don't need a huge TV to have a good night."

He trudged over to the futon, sat on the edge, and crossed his arms over his chest. "I need pumpkin pie for tomorrow. Daddy bought one from the store and it tastes wrong. You have to make the real one."

I sat next to him, smoothing down his unruly blonde hair. "We can bake one together this weekend. I don't have the ingredients tonight."

Finn's lower lip jutted out. "But I want it tomorrow."

"I know," I said softly. "But Mommy doesn't have to provide a pie every single time we see each other."

He pulled his knees to his chest, refusing to look at me. "Are you still mad at me for going to Aunt Rebecca's house?"

My chest tightened. I reached out, tilting his chin up so he had to meet my gaze.

"I still love you, Finn," I told him, speaking clearly. "But 'I love you' and 'I must immediately give you whatever you want' are not the same sentence."

He sniffled, processing the boundary. He waited for me to cave, to rush down to the corner store and buy flour and sugar to prove my devotion. I didn't move. I pulled a picture book from his bag, opened it to the first page, and read him three stories until his eyelids finally drooped.

An hour after Finn fell asleep, a sharp rap sounded at the door. I opened it to find Adam standing in the hallway, holding Finn's blue canvas reading bag.

"He forgot his school folders," Adam said, holding the bag out.

I took it, waiting for him to turn around and leave. He didn't step back toward the stairs. He lingered on the threshold, glancing past my shoulder at the quiet, dimly lit apartment.

"When are you coming home?" he asked.

"I'll bring Finn to the school gates at eight tomorrow morning," I replied, ignoring the question entirely.

"Claire, come on." Adam shifted his weight, frustration leaking into his tone. "He isn't used to sleeping in two different beds. You're disrupting his entire rhythm. Christmas is in three weeks. This has gone far enough."

He wasn't apologizing for the silver. He wasn't apologizing for Thanksgiving. He was listing his own inconveniences.

"If you want to discuss Finn's schedule, use the parenting app," I said, gripping the edge of the heavy steel door. "If you want to discuss me moving back, the answer right now is no."

Adam planted his hand firmly against the doorframe, stopping me from closing it. "What exactly do you want me to do? Tell me the steps so we can end this."

I studied his face. He wanted a checklist. A simple task he could complete to make me docile again.

"Start by never asking me when I'll restore the life you felt comfortable in," I said.

I pushed the door forward. Adam's hand dropped from the frame, and the deadbolt slid into place with a loud snap.

Through the peephole, I watched him stand still in the dim hallway, the mahogany chest of replacement silver resting heavy in his arms, until a folded jewelry store receipt slipped from beneath the brass latch and fluttered to the floor, displaying Rebecca’s signature on the buyer line.
