Chapter 2

"Did you save my second piece of pumpkin pie, Mommy?"

Finn ran through the front entryway, his jacket half-unzipped.

Adam followed a few steps behind him. He carried a stack of plastic containers, the clear lids snapped tight over empty compartments.

"The pie went to Aunt Rebecca's house, Finn," I said, staring at the empty plastic in my husband's hands. "There isn't any left."

Finn stopped pulling at his zipper. His small brows pulled together. "But I shared. Daddy said we share."

"Sometimes sharing means you don't get to keep any for yourself," I answered.

Adam dropped the containers onto the entryway table. The plastic clattered against the wood.

"Don't do that," Adam said, his voice dropping into a warning register. "Rebecca was crying her eyes out. Finn wanted to cheer her up. I made a split-second decision to move the dinner over there."

"So you packed up an entire Thanksgiving meal."

"You can cook a turkey any year, Claire. It's just food."

"Where is my mother's silver?"

Adam unbuttoned his coat, avoiding my gaze. "She's washing it. I'll grab it tomorrow."

"Every piece?" I asked.

Adam finally looked at me. "Yes, Claire. Every piece."

His phone buzzed in his coat pocket before he could turn away. He glanced at the screen. For one second, I caught Rebecca's name and the first line of her message.

Nora feels awful. Call me when you can.

Adam locked the screen so quickly it might as well have been a confession.

"What happened with Nora?" I asked.

"Nothing happened." He shoved the phone back into his pocket. "She got tired after dinner. Can we please not interrogate a four-year-old's evening?"

I watched him take off his shoes without meeting my eyes. The answer was too polished for a question I had barely asked. I could have demanded the phone. Instead, I opened the notes app on mine and wrote one line beneath the photos I had taken earlier: Silver set still at Rebecca's house. Adam says all pieces intact.

If he wanted to make my concern sound irrational, I would stop arguing about what I remembered and start keeping a record.

"You left family heirlooms at a house that isn't ours."

"She needs someone to catch her right now!" Adam threw his hands up, his patience evaporating. "Her husband just walked out. You have a husband. You have a child. You have a home. Why can't you be a little generous?"

I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

"You didn't give her a meal," I said, keeping my voice even. "You took my labor, my inheritance, and my home to do yourself a favor."

Finn shuffled closer to Adam's leg, clutching the fabric of his jeans.

"But Rebecca doesn't have a home," Finn whispered, repeating the exact line Adam had fed him all week.

I crouched down so I was eye-level with my son. I kept my voice soft.

"Finn, if Tommy at school took your favorite red fire truck and gave it to another boy, would that be a good gift?"

Finn shook his head vigorously. "No. It's my truck."

"Right. So whose turkey was it? Whose silver forks were those?"

Finn opened his mouth, then closed it. He looked up at his father for the answer.

"Stop," Adam snapped, stepping between us. "Do not drag a four-year-old into an adult conflict."

I stood up, brushing off my knees.

"I completely agree," I said. "That's why we won't be discussing our marriage in front of him anymore."

Adam's jaw slackened. He expected a fight, a tearful argument where he could eventually calm me down and win. Instead, I established a wall. He was no longer my partner in this conversation. He was just the man who shared my child.

I didn't ask him another question about Rebecca. I didn't demand to check his phone or ask him to prove their boundaries.

I walked past him and went straight to my study.

Flipping on the desk lamp, I pulled my lockbox from the bottom drawer. I stacked the documents on the oak surface: my mother's estate papers, the Bennett Table company files, my passport, and my personal banking information.

When Finn was two, I secured my first major holiday catering contract. Adam booked a last-minute work trip the same week.

"Your thing is flexible," he had told me, zipping his suitcase. "Mine isn't."

I canceled the order to stay home. I believed my career could wait until our family settled.

Not anymore.

I opened my laptop and navigated to the banking portal. I created a new, individual account. With a few keystrokes, I routed the remaining funds from my mother's estate away from our joint checking and into the new account.

I picked up my phone and typed a message to Mara.

"Tomorrow, I'm reopening the company account."

I wasn't hiding marital assets. I was waking up the money that belonged to my business.

At eleven forty-five, an email chimed in my inbox. The lawyer confirmed my morning consultation.

I packed my laptop, the folders, and my chargers into a plastic file box. I carried the heavy bin down the hall and pushed open the door to the guest room.

Adam appeared in the hallway, holding his toothbrush. He leaned against the doorframe, watching me set the box on the spare bed.

"You're really going to sleep in here?" he asked, a condescending edge returning to his voice. "You're still this mad about a holiday. I told you, I'll get the silver back tomorrow. This will all blow over."

I didn't threaten him. I didn't mention the word divorce.

I opened my phone calendar and saved the lawyer's confirmation email to the nine o'clock slot.

"Finn's kindergarten schedule is normal tomorrow," I said, pulling an extra blanket from the closet. "You are handling his breakfast and his drop-off."

Adam frowned, his toothbrush freezing in mid-air. "What? You always wake up before I do."

"I know," I said. "So you should start figuring out what time you need to get up."

I gripped the edge of the door and shoved it closed, the latch catching with a heavy thud just as my phone screen lit up in the dark room, displaying a bright white banner: Reminder - Dissolution of Marriage Consultation.
