Chapter 1

"Put that back," I said, setting the basting brush on the counter. "You know that doesn't leave the house."

Adam stood by the front door, slipping my mother’s antique silver gravy boat into a canvas tote bag. He didn't stop.

"Rebecca just finalized her divorce, Claire," Adam said, adjusting his grip on the bag. "It’s her first holiday alone. I’m taking her a little food later."

"Take the food in plastic containers. Not the silver."

"She doesn't need a gravy boat to take a picture, Adam."

"It completes the table setting," he countered, his tone hardening. "Look, she’s fragile right now. Her husband walked out on her. The least we can do is offer a little support."

"Support is bringing her a plate. Not dismantling our holiday."

"Don't be so tense." He laughed, a short, dismissive sound. "She just wants to borrow it for a nice photo. It’s not a big deal."

"It is a big deal to me. My mother gave me that set before she died."

"And now it's sitting in a drawer nine months out of the year. Let it bring someone else some joy today."

He turned away, ending the conversation. At the kitchen island, our four-year-old son, Finn, slid the place cards across the marble. He held up the one written in my best calligraphy.

"Aunt Rebecca has no real home right now," Finn announced, echoing Adam's phrase from all week. He pushed the card reading 'Mommy' to the far edge of the island. "We can lend Mommy’s seat to Aunt Rebecca."

I waited for Adam to correct him. To explain that a mother's place at the table wasn't a loaner item.

"Good boy," Adam said, walking over and ruffling Finn’s blonde hair. "You’re very good at sharing."

I picked up the 'Mommy' card and tucked it into my apron pocket. I didn't argue. Adam’s version of sharing never required him to ask the person who actually owned the thing being given away.

An hour later, the smell of roasting turkey filled the kitchen.

"Can you slice both pies now?" Adam asked, leaning against the refrigerator.

"Dinner isn't for hours," I said, wiping down the counters.

"She might want a slice early. You know how she gets when she's stressed."

"So I should carve up our dessert before we even sit down?"

"Just cut the pies, Claire. It takes two seconds."

"Making pies is Mommy's job," Finn chimed in from the floor, crashing two toy trucks together. "Mommy does the jobs."

I looked up from the cutting board, staring straight at my husband. "Are you going to correct him?"

Adam checked his watch, his jaw tightening briefly. "He’s four, Claire. Don’t overthink it."

"He thinks I'm the hired help, Adam."

"Stop trying to make the holiday so stressful," Adam snapped. "It's just a word."

The dismissal took me back to Finn's kindergarten open house, where I had spent three nights building allergy-safety charts for his teachers. When another parent praised the binder, Adam had smiled and patted my shoulder.

"We’ve got a great system," Adam had told them, taking the binder from my hands. "Claire just loves to find things to worry about."

I wiped my hands on a towel. Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out my phone and opened my inbox. A message from Mara sat at the top.

"The Bennett Table commercial kitchen is cleared for use," the email read. "And the upstairs apartment is empty whenever you want to look at it."

I archived the email. I hadn't made a firm decision to leave yet. But for the first time in our marriage, I kept the exit door unlocked.

Exhaustion hit me hard around three o'clock. I went upstairs, intending to close my eyes for just twenty minutes.

When I woke up, the bedroom was completely dark.

"Adam?" I called out, stepping onto the landing.

Silence answered.

"Finn?"

I hurried down the stairs, my socks slipping slightly on the hardwood. The kitchen island held nothing but a scattered pile of chopped rosemary stems. I touched the oven glass. Cold.

The twenty-pound turkey I had prepped for two days was gone. The pies were missing. The mashed potatoes, the roasted vegetables, the gravy boat, and the entire velvet-lined box of my mother’s silver flatware—all vanished.

In the dining room, the mahogany table I had set that morning was stripped bare. Even the linen napkins were gone.

I opened the family location app. Two blue dots pulsed over Rebecca’s address three miles away.

I opened a social media app and clicked on Rebecca’s profile. A purple ring indicated she was broadcasting live. I tapped it.

The screen filled with the image of my roasted turkey, at the center of Rebecca’s dining table. Adam stood at the head of the table. He gripped my mother’s silver carving knife, slicing smoothly into the breast meat.

Comments scrolled rapidly up the side of the screen.

"He’s so gentle," one user typed.

"Love a man who steps up to give his divorced friend a real home," wrote another.

"Look at that spread," Adam said on the video, gesturing to the sides I had spent all morning preparing. "Nothing beats a home-cooked meal."

"You really saved the day, Adam," Rebecca replied softly.

"Happy to do it. You deserve a good Thanksgiving."

Rebecca entered the frame, holding a glass of red wine. She smiled into the lens, her hair perfectly styled.

"I just want to say thank you to the people who are willing to step in and become family when you're at your most lonely," Rebecca said, raising her glass toward Adam.

Next to her, Finn sat in a tall chair, waving his fork enthusiastically.

A comment popped up: "Where is the little guy’s mom today?"

Rebecca read it aloud. She paused, letting a sympathetic expression cross her face, then glanced at Finn.

"Aunt Rebecca gets to be our Thanksgiving mom today," Finn grinned at the camera, completely innocent. "Mommy gets us all the other days."

Adam heard every word. He didn't stop carving. He didn't mention that his wife had cooked every ounce of food on that table.

"He gets it," Adam chuckled, looking straight into the lens.

I exited the livestream. The app closed with a soft click.

I didn't call Adam to scream. I didn't text Rebecca to demand my things back.

Raising my phone, I snapped a picture of the empty dining table. I walked into the kitchen and photographed the cold oven, the greasy roasting pan left in the sink, and the empty drawer where my mother's silver belonged.

Then I opened the browser. I navigated to the scheduling page for a top family law attorney in the city.

The calendar loaded. I selected the earliest available consultation slot for tomorrow morning and typed in my name.

Next, I opened the family location app. I went to the settings menu, found my profile, and toggled the sharing switch to the off position.

The screen refreshed. My dot vanished from the map.

Almost instantly, a text from Adam appeared at the top of my screen.

"Claire? Why did your location disappear?"

I set the phone face down on the bare kitchen island.
