They Called Me Weak Until I Reclaimed My Son

Chapter 2

By dinner, my belongings had already been moved out of the master suite.

Not to one of the larger guest rooms overlooking the gardens or the private pool where important allies usually stayed during syndicate gatherings.

They put me in the small room at the far end of the second-floor corridor, beside the old security wing where the heating failed every winter and the walls still carried the faint smell of cigarette smoke from soldiers stationed there years ago.

Two maids carried the last of my boxes down the hallway while Lilith stood inside my bedroom, calmly directing them with the ease of someone who already believed the room belonged to her.

“That painting can stay,” she said softly, pointing toward the wall beside the fireplace. “It matches the curtains.”

The painting was mine.

I bought it during the first year of my marriage, back when Damon still pretended to come home before midnight and I still believed silence meant peace instead of indifference. I remembered standing alone inside a private gallery in Florence while bodyguards waited outside, staring at the pale blue ocean painted across the canvas and thinking it looked like freedom.

Damon never once asked about it.

Now Lilith had decided it suited her curtains.

Damon emerged from the dressing room while adjusting the cuffs of his black shirt, his gun holster visible beneath the fabric for only a second before he covered it again. He looked exhausted, like a man returning from war instead of a meeting with the eastern cartel brokers.

“Is everything moved?” he asked.

One of the maids glanced nervously at me before nodding.

Lilith slipped her hand around Damon’s arm with practiced familiarity. “There’s one more thing.”

His attention shifted to her immediately. “What is it?”

“The nursery.” Her voice softened delicately. “The doctor said I should prepare early, especially with the risks surrounding the pregnancy. I saw the room beside the master suite. It’s perfect.”

My chest tightened.

The nursery.

My nursery.

Three years ago, I spent months preparing that room in secret while Damon buried himself in syndicate business and blood negotiations. I chose the wallpaper myself. Imported the crib from Italy. Folded tiny clothes with trembling hands while imagining a child laughing somewhere inside this cold mansion.

Then came the bleeding.

The emergency surgery.

The darkness.

I still remembered waking up in a private hospital room with tubes running through my veins while Evelyn Ravenscar stood beside the bed dressed in black silk and diamonds, her face untouched by sympathy.

“The baby is gone,” she told me flatly. “Do not make this harder for Damon than it already is.”

After that day, I locked the nursery and never opened it again.

Damon knew exactly why.

But he hesitated for only a moment before saying, “Use it.”

My nails pressed so deeply into my palm that pain shot up my fingers.

Lilith turned toward me with wide, gentle eyes. “You don’t mind, do you, Aveline? I heard you never go in there anyway. It feels wasteful leaving a child’s room empty.”

A child’s room.

Mine had remained empty because my child never survived long enough to sleep there.

Now another woman would decorate it for hers.

I looked at Damon.

His expression already carried impatience, the same cold exhaustion he wore before ordering executions or settling debts.

“Aveline,” he said evenly, “Lilith is pregnant with the family heir. That room should finally be used for its purpose.”

The family heir.

The words sliced through me more cleanly than rage ever could.

But I said nothing.

The Ravenscar family valued silence almost as much as violence, and after seven years inside their empire, I had mastered both.

One of the staff members carried in Lilith’s medical bag, but the zipper caught against the doorway and spilled part of its contents onto the floor. A small silver pouch rolled toward my feet before anyone noticed.

I bent automatically and picked it up.

The label across the front made my pulse stop.

Embryo Transfer Support — Progesterone Protocol.

Not prenatal supplements.

Not standard pregnancy medication.

Embryo transfer support.

For a brief second, the entire hallway seemed to disappear around me.

Lilith noticed the pouch in my hand.

Something flickered across her face.

Fear.

Only for an instant.

Then she crossed the room smoothly and took it from me with a light laugh. “These clinics use ridiculous labels these days.”

Before I could answer, another voice entered the room.

“Well? Has she settled in properly?”

Evelyn Ravenscar stepped into the hallway beside one of the family’s private physicians, the air around her turning colder the same way it always did. She looked first at the boxes stacked outside my new room, and satisfaction curled faintly at the corners of her mouth.

“At least you finally understand your place in this house.”

I lowered my eyes before she could read what I was thinking.

Evelyn walked straight past me and took Lilith’s hand warmly. “How is my grandson tonight?”

Lilith smiled shyly. “Still restless.”

“Good,” Evelyn replied, resting a jeweled hand against her stomach. “A Ravenscar heir should be strong.”

The doctor beside her opened a digital file on his tablet. “The carrier should avoid unnecessary stress for the next few weeks—”

The hallway went silent.

Lilith stiffened.

The doctor paled instantly. “I mean the mother,” he corrected quickly. “The mother should avoid stress.”

Damon didn’t react.

But Evelyn did.

Her gaze cut toward me sharply before smoothing over again too fast to appear natural.

And in that moment, everything became horrifyingly clear.

Evelyn knew.

Lilith knew.

The doctor knew.

The only person in this mansion who didn’t know the truth was Damon Ravenscar himself.

My husband stepped toward me slowly. “Whatever issues you have with Lilith, keep them away from her pregnancy. She and the child come first now.”

Not cruel enough to sound vicious.

Cruel enough to stay with me forever.

I nodded once and walked away before my expression betrayed me.

The hallway outside Evelyn’s private study was dark except for the thin line of light beneath the half-closed door. As I passed, her voice drifted through the opening.

“The Ravenscar syndicate cannot survive another quarter bleeding money like this,” she said sharply. “If the Ashenford family truly has connections to the Stones, then this pregnancy solves everything.”

A muffled male voice answered through speakerphone.

Evelyn scoffed. “Yes, I know rumors say the Stone family has a daughter hidden somewhere overseas. No one’s seen the girl since the kidnapping years ago. Maybe she’s crippled. Maybe she’s unstable. Maybe she’s too damaged to appear in public. I don’t care. As long as Lilith gets us through the front door, Damon can finally divorce Aveline and secure the alliance properly.”

I stood frozen outside the study while she insulted the very woman she had spent years desperately searching for.

The missing Stone heiress.

The child kidnapped at seven during a failed assassination attempt against her father.

The girl whose identity had been erased from public records afterward for her own protection.

Me.

I married Damon under the name Aveline Silvercrest because the Stone name painted targets on people’s backs. My parents begged me more than once to come home after the wedding, but I refused every time because I believed Damon loved me for myself instead of my bloodline.

So they stayed away.

Not because they abandoned me.

Because I asked them to.

Now the Ravenscar family was humiliating the daughter of the very empire they were trying to reach.

My phone felt unbearably heavy in my pocket.

There was one number I had never used.

Nikolai Cross.

The Stone family attorney.

The man assigned to protect me after the kidnapping all those years ago.

Calling him meant admitting I could no longer survive this alone.

For several seconds, I stared at the contact.

Then I opened it.

I sent three photos.

The pregnancy case number.

The embryo transfer medication.

The doctor’s file I managed to glimpse before Lilith hid it again.

After that, I typed only four words.

I need proof. Quietly.

The reply took ten minutes.

Ten minutes spent standing alone in a dark hallway while my husband settled his mistress into our bedroom and my body slowly failed beneath my skin.

When the screen finally lit up, my chest tightened before I even opened the message.

Nikolai’s response was short.

Aveline, the case code belongs to your original embryo file.

Another message appeared immediately after.

Lilith Ashenford is listed only as the carrier.

I read the words once.

Then again.

Carrier.

Not mother.

Damon believed Lilith was carrying his child.

But according to the records hidden from me for three years—

the baby growing inside her belonged to me.
