They Called Me Weak Until I Reclaimed My Son

Chapter 3

The following evening, Evelyn Ravenscar hosted a private family dinner inside the east wing of the mansion.

Not a public banquet for politicians and syndicate allies.

Not one of the extrAvelinegant casino gatherings where men toasted over blood-stained business deals while musicians played in the background.

This dinner was quieter.

Smaller.

Far more dangerous.

Only the Ravenscar elders, the Ashenford family, two family lawyers, and a handful of trusted witnesses were invited. In mafia families, humiliation was never accidental when lawyers were present. Every insult delivered in rooms like these was meant to become part of the official record.

I understood the purpose immediately when I entered the dining hall.

Lilith sat beside Damon.

Evelyn occupied the head of the table beneath the Ravenscar family crest carved into black wood.

And I had been placed near the far end beside a silent cousin involved in the family’s smuggling routes and a lawyer whose briefcase was already open before dinner even began.

Lilith wore cream-colored silk and my grandmother’s sapphire bracelet around her wrist like a trophy inherited through marriage instead of theft. Every few minutes, her hand drifted protectively over her stomach whenever someone looked her way.

Mrs. Ashenford raised her wine glass elegantly.

“To the future Ravenscar heir.”

Crystal clinked around the table.

Everyone drank.

I didn’t.

Damon noticed immediately. His eyes lifted toward me briefly, dark and unreadable beneath the low chandelier light, but he said nothing.

Evelyn smiled at Lilith with the warmth she had never once shown me in seven years.

“Our family has waited far too long for good news,” she said smoothly. “Some women bring misfortune into a house. Others bring prosperity.”

The words were aimed at me.

The praise belonged to Lilith.

One of the lawyers slid a document across the table until it stopped beside my plate.

“What is this?” I asked quietly.

My voice sounded calm enough that Damon glanced at me with faint surprise.

Evelyn answered before the lawyer could speak.

“A family harmony agreement.”

Lilith lowered her gaze modestly. “Please don’t misunderstand, Aveline. It simply confirms that you accept the pregnancy and won’t create unnecessary conflict later. I don’t want Damon’s child growing up surrounded by hostility.”

Damon’s child.

Possibly mine.

I opened the document slowly.

The first page contained harmless language about family reputation and public appearances.

The second discussed inheritance stability within the Ravenscar organization.

The third made my blood run cold.

Buried beneath layers of legal phrasing was a clause stating that I voluntarily surrendered all present and future claims over any embryos, children, reproductive materials, or fertility records connected to Damon Ravenscar.

There it was.

Not peace.

Not harmony.

Erasure.

Evelyn wanted my signature before I could expose what she had done.

I lifted my eyes toward her.

She met my gaze without hesitation, perfectly composed in black diamonds and silk as though stealing another woman’s child was nothing more than business strategy.

For one brief moment, I almost admired her ruthlessness.

She had taken my embryo, placed it inside another woman, and now intended to strip away my legal right to ever call that child mine.

Damon leaned slightly closer to me, impatience already hardening his voice.

“Sign it, Aveline. This family has had enough unnecessary drama.”

Drama.

That was what powerful people called betrayal when they wanted the victim to stay silent about it.

Before I could answer, Mr. Ashenford rose from his chair and handed Evelyn a sealed folder.

“Our family has already established preliminary communication with someone connected to the Stone organization,” he announced proudly. “Once Lilith formally joins the Ravenscar family, cooperation with Stone Trust should move forward smoothly.”

At that, Evelyn’s expression brightened for the first time all evening.

I glanced casually toward the papers inside the folder.

The seal printed across the documents was wrong.

Most people wouldn’t have noticed.

But I did.

The authentic Stone family crest carried two interlocked rings surrounding a fractured star — a symbol created after the kidnapping attempt that nearly killed me when I was seven years old.

The Ashenford documents used a single-ring imitation.

Fake.

Lilith caught me staring at the seal and smiled faintly across the table.

She thought I was too ignorant to recognize the family whose blood ran through my veins.

Then Damon lifted his wine glass.

“To Lilith,” he said calmly. “For giving this family a future.”

Lilith’s eyes softened instantly. “Damon…”

“And,” he continued, “for everything you did for me after Palermo. I wouldn’t be alive today without you.”

My fingers froze against the edge of the agreement.

Lilith lowered her head with practiced modesty while Evelyn watched the scene with satisfaction.

The scar beneath my ribs burned suddenly, hot and vicious beneath my dress.

I remembered waking after the kidney surgery years ago, barely conscious from pain while machines beeped quietly around me. Evelyn sat beside my hospital bed that night, elegant and merciless beneath the dim lights.

“Damon is too proud to live indebted to anyone,” she told me softly. “If he discovers you gave him your kidney, he’ll stay out of guilt instead of love. Is that what you want?”

I had loved him enough to believe her.

So I stayed silent.

And my silence became Lilith Ashenford’s miracle.

Lilith never donated anything.

She never sat bleeding in an operating room while doctors removed part of her body to save Damon’s life.

She simply arrived afterward carrying flowers and sympathy while Evelyn allowed Damon to believe whatever he wanted.

Now he looked at her like she had personally pulled him back from death.

I closed the agreement carefully.

“I won’t sign.”

The entire table fell silent.

Damon’s expression darkened immediately. “Aveline.”

“I said no.”

Lilith’s eyes reddened with terrifying speed, tears gathering so perfectly they almost looked rehearsed. “I knew you hated this baby.”

I looked directly at her. “I said I won’t sign away rights connected to medical records I haven’t reviewed with my own lawyer.”

Evelyn’s glass struck the table sharply.

“What rights?” she snapped coldly. “You have no child. You failed to give Damon an heir.”

A sharp pulse of pain twisted beneath my ribs, but I kept my spine straight.

Across the table, Lilith rose too quickly. The sapphire bracelet slipped against the marble edge with a sharp crack before falling to the floor.

The room went still.

One blue stone broke loose and rolled beneath Damon’s chair.

Lilith gasped dramatically. “Aveline!”

I hadn’t touched her.

Not once.

Yet she clutched her wrist as though I’d shoved her violently. “I only wanted to show you I treasured it. Why would you—”

“Enough.”

Damon stood abruptly.

But he wasn’t looking at the broken bracelet.

Or the missing stone.

Or the obvious lie unraveling right in front of him.

He was looking at me.

“Apologize,” he ordered.

For several seconds, I simply stared at him.

At the man carrying my kidney inside his body.

At the man protecting the woman carrying my possible child.

At the man thanking someone else for sacrifices I made in silence.

“No.”

The temperature in the room seemed to drop instantly.

Evelyn rose from her chair so fast it scraped loudly across the marble floor.

“You ungrateful barren thing.”

The slap came hard enough to snap my head sideways.

For a second, the world disappeared into ringing silence.

Blood filled my mouth where my teeth cut into my cheek.

Then agony exploded through my remaining kidney so violently my knees nearly gave out beneath me.

I caught myself against the edge of the table while the room tilted dangerously around me.

Damon took one instinctive step toward me.

Then Lilith pressed a trembling hand to her stomach and swayed.

“Damon…” she whispered weakly.

He stopped immediately.

And in that tiny pause, I saw the truth more clearly than I ever had before.

He had already chosen.

Maybe not just tonight.

Maybe years ago.

Lilith collapsed delicately into his arms.

I collapsed hard against the marble floor.

Somewhere near my hand lay the broken sapphire bracelet.

I couldn’t quite reach it.

Damon lifted Lilith without hesitation.

“Call the doctor,” he barked sharply.

The family physician rushed after them.

Evelyn followed close behind, panic written across her face for the safety of the heir.

No one looked back at me.

No one asked whether I could stand.

No one noticed the blood at the corner of my mouth or the fact that my body was beginning to fail beneath the weight of everything it had already sacrificed for this family.

Their footsteps faded down the corridor one by one until the dining hall finally fell silent.

I remained on the floor beside the shattered bracelet, listening to the echo of a house that had never truly belonged to me.

Then another pair of footsteps entered the room.

Steady.

Controlled.

A man crouched beside me.

He didn’t call me Miss Stone.

Not here.

Not inside Ravenscar territory.

His voice remained low and careful.

“Aveline,” Nikolai Cross said quietly, “your transplant team is ready. We need to leave now.”

I forced my eyes open fully.

Nikolai looked older than he had the last time I saw him, but his expression remained exactly the same — calm, watchful, dangerous when necessary. He had been the man who carried me out of a burning vehicle after my kidnapping at seven years old.

And now he had come for me again.

I looked once toward the hallway where Damon disappeared carrying another woman.

Then I looked at the broken sapphire lying across the marble floor.

For the first time in years, I stopped waiting for my husband to come back for me.

Slowly, I placed my hand in Nikolai’s.
