Chapter 2

I blinked slowly, my fingers tightening around the wooden ladle until my knuckles turned pale.

“I-I’ll make another pot,” I whispered, already reaching for his bowl.

Don Viktor Devereux slammed the spoon down hard enough to rattle the glassware.

“Oh, come now, Vivienne.” His voice carried that familiar edge—controlled, but sharp enough to cut. “If you’re still sulking over what I said earlier, this is a pathetic way to show it.”

I froze.

He leaned back in his chair like he owned the world—and he did, at least in this city. Devereux Holdings controlled half the import routes along the eastern ports, and what the legitimate companies didn’t show, the syndicate did.

“What is this?” he continued coldly. “Punishment? You expect me to eat this because your feelings got hurt?”

His dark eyes narrowed at me.

“You did not even try. Cooking is the only thing you’re required to do in this house.”

The only thing.

The words didn’t echo. They settled.

Like a verdict.

To them, that was all I was.

Not a partner in a crime family that moved weapons through coastal shipments and laundered money through hotels and casinos.

Not the wife of a don whose name made councilmen sweat.

Just someone who kept the house running while real decisions were made elsewhere.

I was the woman who woke before sunrise to prepare meals for men who discussed territories over breakfast.

The woman who stayed up waiting for Viktor when he returned from meetings that smelled like cigar smoke, gunpowder, and expensive alcohol.

The woman who raised a son who learned power before he learned kindness.

None of it mattered.

Because I was only the wife in title.

Not in respect.

Not in influence.

A real don’s wife sat beside him in council meetings, her opinion shaping alliances.

I was just background noise in my own marriage.

Once, I believed this life meant something.

That loyalty meant security.

That building a home inside an empire meant I had a place in it.

But empires don’t care who helped build them.

Only who owns them.

My throat tightened.

“I’ll make another batch,” I said quietly.

Before anyone could respond, the doors at the far end of the dining hall opened.

The sound of heels clicked sharply against marble.

“Well,” a familiar voice said, smooth as silk and twice as dangerous, “this is a lovely family dinner.”

My chest tightened.

Seraphina.

Of course.

She stepped in like she belonged to every room she entered. Tailored coat, Devereux sigil pin glinting at her lapel—official now, not just family. Escort of the northern trade division, advisor on paper, trusted voice behind closed doors.

Always just close enough to power.

Never outside of it.

“I brought the northern ledgers,” she said lightly, lifting a leather folder. “Viktor might want to go over them before tomorrow’s meeting with the Alvarez group.”

My father straightened immediately at her presence, like a switch had been flipped.

“Seraphina, come in. Sit.”

She smiled politely, eyes scanning the table. “I didn’t realize you were dining already.”

Then her gaze landed on my pot.

“The smell is wonderful,” she added. “Vivienne still insists on cooking personally. That’s… admirable.”

Viktor scoffed under his breath.

“Admirable?” He pushed the bowl away. “It’s barely edible.”

The words weren’t loud.

They didn’t need to be.

In a room full of men who had ordered killings over less, tone mattered more than volume.

Seraphina tilted her head slightly, as if evaluating the situation the way she would a negotiation.

“Perhaps we should eat out instead,” Viktor said, already standing. “Silver Fang reopened. Better food. Better company.”

“Oh, that place?” one of the men at the table muttered approvingly. “Heard they’ve upgraded security too.”

My father nodded. “Good choice. We can discuss the East Harbor shipments while we’re there.”

Just like that, the dinner I had prepared became irrelevant.

Seraphina’s eyes flicked toward me.

“Vivienne,” she said gently, “come with us.”

For half a second, something foolish stirred in my chest.

Hope.

Then Viktor answered without even looking at me.

“She’s staying,” he said flatly. “There’s still work here.”

Work.

As if I were staff.

As if I weren’t sitting at the same table I had helped fund with years of silent sacrifice and obedience.

“She can reheat her own meal,” he added. “We’ll be discussing matters she wouldn’t understand anyway.”

Wouldn’t understand.

As if I had never sat in on meetings when I was still allowed to speak.

As if I had never learned how money moved through offshore accounts, how territories were divided, how respect in this world was just fear with better tailoring.

Seraphina hesitated.

Then she smiled again.

“I’ll bring something back,” she said softly. “From Silver Fang.”

And just like that, they left.

Laughter followed them down the corridor.

Doors opened. Guards shifted. Engines started outside.

The house exhaled without me.

Silence filled the dining hall.

I stood there for a long moment before sitting down in Viktor’s chair.

The bowl in front of me was still warm.

I lifted the spoon.

Tasted it.

It was bland.

Not because I failed.

But because I hadn’t tasted anything in a long time.

Not joy.

Not recognition.

Not even anger that lasted.

Only routine.

Only endurance.

My eyes drifted around the dining hall.

Imported wood. Italian marble. Security systems hidden behind art pieces worth more than most neighborhoods in this city.

Everything I had maintained.

Everything I had kept running while the real empire moved elsewhere.

And still…

I wasn’t part of it.

I finished the bowl anyway.

Cleaned the table.

Washed the dishes.

Folded the cloths.

The same way I always did.

Like nothing had happened.

Like I hadn’t just been quietly erased from my own life again.

Later, I stood in the bedroom that had once been shared space and now felt like a room I rented with memories.

Viktor wasn’t there.

He often wasn’t.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at my hands.

Steady.

Too steady.

I had learned to be useful.

To be quiet.

To be convenient.

And somewhere along the way, I had stopped being anything else.

“I chose this,” I whispered.

But the truth settled heavier beneath it.

I stayed.

I adapted.

I survived inside a world that never once asked if I wanted to.

And for the first time in twenty-five years of marriage, I wondered—

what would happen if I stopped being convenient at all.
