Chapter 3

I slipped quietly from the bed before dawn fully broke over the Devereux estate, careful not to disturb Viktor as he slept beside me. The room was still, heavy with the kind of silence only money and power can afford. Beyond the reinforced glass windows, guards rotated along the perimeter of the compound, their footsteps faint against marble and steel. Somewhere far below, engines from incoming vehicles hummed—early deliveries for a family that never truly stopped working.

For a brief moment, I stood there looking at him.

Viktor Devereux.

Don of the Devereux Syndicate. The man whose name didn’t just open doors in this city—it controlled them. Ports, shipping routes, import contracts, even half the politicians who pretended they weren’t bought.

And for twenty-five years, I had stood beside that name like it meant I belonged to it.

I turned away and walked toward the wooden cabinet in the corner of the room.

That cabinet had always been my quiet space inside a house that never really felt like mine. Not the kitchens I managed, not the estate I maintained, not even the title of “Mrs. Devereux” that carried weight in rooms I was rarely invited to speak in.

Inside it were the small things I had saved for myself over the years.

I opened it.

My breath stopped.

The carved box on the second shelf was empty.

I checked again. Then again. Faster now, drawers opening harder, hands shaking as I searched through everything I knew was there yesterday.

Moonflower cosmetic powder. Gone.

Imported lip pigments. Gone.

A small crystal perfume vial I had saved for months to buy without asking anyone. Gone.

My chest tightened.

Something cold crept up my spine.

I didn’t think—I moved.

Downstairs.

The main hall was already awake, as expected. Viktor sat near the long table surrounded by documents, ledgers, and coded reports from the east docks. Two of his men stood nearby, quiet and alert. The scent of strong coffee and cedar smoke filled the room.

“Viktor,” I said carefully, “did you see what was in my cabinet upstairs?”

He didn’t even look up.

“Oh, that,” he said flatly.

My stomach dropped before he even finished.

“I gave it to Seraphina.”

Silence.

Not dramatic. Not loud.

Just the kind that lands like a gun being set down on a table.

“You—what?” My voice came out smaller than I intended. “Viktor, those were mine.”

He finally glanced at me, mildly annoyed now, like I had interrupted something important.

“Vivienne,” he said, leaning back slightly, “what do you need cosmetics for?”

I stared at him.

As if I had misheard.

As if I had misunderstood the rules of my own life.

“You don’t attend events anymore,” he continued casually. “And let’s be honest… you’re not exactly in a position to make use of them.”

My fingers went numb.

“They were mine,” I said quietly.

He exhaled like I was exhausting him.

“Everything in this house is tied to this family’s money,” he replied. “Don’t pretend otherwise.”

That was the moment I understood.

Not just the loss of the items.

But the principle behind it.

Nothing I kept was ever truly mine. Not in his eyes. Not in this world.

“I bought them myself,” I said, firmer now.

Viktor gave a short, dismissive laugh.

“Bought them?” He shook his head. “Vivienne, everything you have exists because of this name. Because of me.”

My throat tightened painfully.

Before I could respond, his chair scraped back slightly as he leaned forward again, expression sharpening.

“Stop turning this into a scene,” he said coldly. “Seraphina actually uses these things properly. She represents the family when I can’t. She deserves them more than you do.”

Something in my chest cracked—not loudly, not dramatically.

Just cleanly.

Like a line being erased.

“You gave them away,” I said, barely audible.

“Yes,” he replied without hesitation. “Because it made sense.”

Made sense.

As if I were a calculation that didn’t balance anymore.

As if I were excess weight in a ledger.

I stood there for a moment too long, staring at a man who had once sworn my place beside him was permanent.

Then he sighed again, already losing interest.

“Enough,” he said. “I don’t have time for this. I have meetings with the Alvarez contact this morning. Go prepare breakfast.”

And just like that, I was dismissed.

Not as a wife.

Not as a partner in an empire built on fear, favors, and blood-debt negotiations.

But as staff.

So I turned away.

Because in this house, that was what I always did when I had no other choice.

And somewhere behind me, the syndicate continued moving forward—without ever slowing down to notice what it had already erased.
