Chapter 4

Maya's pov

The rain had stopped, but the sky remained a heavy, unrelenting gray, as if the world itself refused to brighten for this day. I stood in the Blackwood family cemetery on the edge of the sprawling estate grounds, a small private plot surrounded by ancient oaks dripping with leftover moisture. Ethan’s tiny white casket rested on the straps over the open grave, so heartbreakingly small it looked like a toy box rather than my son’s final resting place. Flowers, white lilies and blue forget-me-nots, his favorites, covered the top. I had chosen every detail myself.

No one else had come. Not really.

A handful of staff stood at a respectful distance, heads bowed. The minister’s voice droned on about eternal peace and God’s plan, words that felt like knives twisting in my already shattered heart. I clutched a single red toy airplane in my trembling hands, the one Ethan had dropped the night everything ended. Its plastic wings dug into my palms, but the pain was nothing compared to the emptiness inside.

“Ethan Blackwood was a bright light in our lives,” the minister said gently. “Taken too soon by illness, but forever in our hearts.”

Illness. Such a clean, clinical word for the storm that ripped him from me. I wanted to scream at the man, to tell him it wasn’t just asthma. It was neglect. It was a father who chose a birthday dinner over his son’s desperate calls. It was me, failing to protect him despite every breath I took for him.

Tears streamed silently down my face at first. Then, as the straps lowered the casket inch by inch into the cold earth, the pain exploded.

“No!” The word tore from my throat, raw and animalistic. I lunged forward, dropping to my knees at the grave’s edge. Mud soaked through my black dress, staining my stockings. “Don’t take him! He’s my baby! Ethan, Mommy’s here! Don’t go!”

My screams echoed across the quiet grounds. Birds scattered from the trees. The minister paused, uncertain. A staff member stepped closer, but I waved them away violently.

“Come back to me!” I wailed, reaching down as if I could pull the casket back up. “I can’t do this without you. Who will I read stories to? Who will call me Mommy with that little voice? Ethan, please… I love you bigger than the sky!”

Sobs wracked my body so hard I could barely breathe. This was the same desperate gasping Ethan had done that night. The irony burned. I rocked back and forth on my knees, the toy airplane pressed to my chest like a lifeline. Memories flooded me in vivid, merciless waves.

The night he was born, his first cry filling the delivery room while Adrian paced outside on business calls. Ethan’s tiny hand wrapping around my finger, promising me forever. His chubby legs ran across the playroom, laughing as I chased him. Bedtime stories where he demanded “the airplane one” again and again. The way he’d crawl into my bed during storms, whispering, “Safe with Mommy.”

And now, safe in the ground. Alone. Because his father couldn’t be bothered.

Hours earlier, I had prepared for this day in a fog of grief. The mansion felt like a tomb itself. I had dressed in the black dress I hated, the one that made me look like the widow I was in name only. I arranged the flowers myself in the small chapel on the grounds, rejecting Adrian’s suggestions for a grander affair. “No spectacle,” I had told the planner coldly. “This is for Ethan. Not the Blackwood name.”

Adrian had nodded absently, already distracted. “Vanessa sends her condolences. She thought a joint statement might help with public perception.”

Public perception. Even in death, it was about image.

I had screamed at him then too, in the privacy of the nursery I couldn’t bear to empty. “Our son is dead, and you’re worried about statements? Get out!”

Then he suddenly walked away.

Of course he did.

Now, at the graveside, the minister finished the final prayer. Dirt was shoveled in,each thud on the casket like a nail in my soul. I grabbed a handful of earth myself, cool and damp, and let it fall. “Goodbye, my heart,” I whispered. “Mommy will make this right somehow. I promise.”

The staff offered quiet words of sympathy before dispersing. I remained kneeling long after they left, the sky growing darker. Pain consumed me,physical, as my knees ached and my throat burned from screaming; emotional, a black hole swallowing every joy I had ever known. How could the world continue when my child was gone? Cars still drove on distant roads. Birds sang. But my world had ended.

Footsteps approached eventually. I didn’t turn. I knew that gait.

Adrian stood a few feet away, impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit. But he wasn’t alone. Vanessa hovered at his side, elegant in a modest dark dress, her hand resting comfortingly on his arm. She murmured something to him. He nodded, leaning into her touch.

Rage ignited through the grief like gasoline on fire.

“You brought her here?” I rose slowly, legs shaking, fists clenched around the toy airplane. “To *my son’s* funeral?”

Adrian’s face was a mask of controlled sorrow. “Vanessa wanted to pay her respects. She’s been a great support during this difficult time.”

“Support?” My voice rose to a scream again. “Where was your support when Ethan called for you? When I begged you from the hospital? You arrived hours later to blame me! And now, at his burial, you comfort *her* instead of your wife?”

Vanessa had the decency to look slightly uncomfortable, but she didn’t move away. “Maya, this isn’t the time..”

“Shut up!” I shrieked, stepping forward. Mud caked my dress. Tears and snot mixed on my face. I didn’t care. “You stole my husband’s attention for years. You helped create the environment where Ethan came second. And now you stand here like some grieving saint? Get away from my son’s grave!”

Adrian moved between us, his hand on my shoulder, firm, but not gentle. “Enough, Maya. You’re hysterical. Ethan’s death was tragic, but we must handle this with dignity. The family..”

I slapped his hand away. “Dignity? There is no dignity in burying your four-year-old alone! I stood here screaming for him while you were probably holding *her* hand. Did you even cry for him, Adrian? Or was it just another inconvenience for the great Blackwood CEO?”

Pain flashed in his eyes, real, raw for a moment. “I loved him in my way. But blaming each other won’t bring him back.”

“Your way?” I laughed through sobs, a broken, ugly sound. “Your way was absence. Late nights. Prioritizing parties and mistresses. I gave up everything for this family, for Ethan. And you killed him with your neglect as surely as the asthma did.”

The words hung heavy. Vanessa touched Adrian’s arm again. “Perhaps I should wait in the car.”

“Yes,” I spat. “Leave. Both of you.”

Adrian stayed a moment longer, staring at the fresh mound of dirt. “The headstone will be installed next week. Something fitting. I… I’ll make sure you have everything you need.”

“I needed you that night,” I whispered, collapsing back to my knees as fresh waves of agony hit. “I needed my husband. Ethan needed his father. Now all I need is for you to disappear.”

He turned and walked away with Vanessa. Their figures retreated toward the mansion, her hand still on his arm. Comforting him. The man who should have been comforting me.

Alone again, I screamed until my voice gave out. I beat the ground with my fists, dirt embedding under my nails. “Why him? Why my baby? Take me instead! Bring him back!”

No answer came. Only wind through the oaks and the distant call of a bird. I curled up beside the grave, whispering stories to the dirt as if Ethan could still hear me. The airplane I placed gently on top. “Fly high, my love. Mommy will be strong for you. I’ll find out why this happened. The secrets, the neglect… it won’t be for nothing.”

Grief twisted into something darker as the hours passed. The gentle Maya who endured was fracturing. In her place rose a woman forged in loss, determined, vengeful. The Blackwoods had taken my son. They would pay.

But for now, I stayed with Ethan until the sun set completely. A mother’s love didn’t end with a funeral. It burned eternal, even in the ashes of everything I once was.
