Chapter 5

Maya's pov

The town car hummed along the rain-slicked roads, carrying me away from the cemetery where I had just buried my only child. I sat in the back seat, pressed against the door, my mud-caked black dress heavy and cold against my skin. The driver remained silent, his eyes fixed ahead, offering the kind of respectful distance the wealthy demanded. Rain streaked the tinted windows like tears that refused to stop. I clutched Ethan’s small red toy airplane in both hands, its plastic wings biting into my palms. It was all I had managed to save from the funeral, his favorite toy from that final night.

Every jolt of the car sent fresh waves of agony through my body. My knees burned from hours spent kneeling in the mud, screaming his name into the grave. My throat felt shredded from the raw howls that had torn out of me as they lowered his tiny white casket. But the deepest pain was a vast, hollow void in my chest, an emptiness so complete it made breathing hurt. How could the world keep spinning? Trees blurred past the window, indifferent and green. Distant cars splashed through puddles. Life continued for everyone else, but mine had ended with a small boy who would never call “Mommy” again.

Tears slipped down my cheeks silently at first. I pressed my forehead to the glass, its coolness a small mercy. “Ethan,” I whispered, voice cracking. “Mommy’s going home now. But you’re not there waiting. You’ll never be there again.” The sobs built like a storm inside me, slow and inevitable. By the time the massive iron gates of Blackwood Mansion appeared through the rain, I was shaking, hugging the toy airplane to my heart as if it could somehow fill the hole.

The gates creaked open like reluctant jaws. The long driveway stretched before us, lined with perfectly trimmed trees that had always felt more like walls than landscaping. This place had never been a true home. It was a gilded prison where I had raised Ethan in quiet corners while Adrian chased power and Vanessa. Now, without my son, it was nothing but a tomb.

The car stopped at the grand entrance. I didn’t wait for help. I pushed the door open and stepped out into the pouring rain. Cold water soaked my hair instantly, mingling with my tears. “Thank you,” I managed to say to the driver, my voice barely audible. He nodded with pity in his eyes and drove away, tires crunching on gravel. I was alone.

Climbing the wide stone steps felt like scaling a mountain. My legs trembled with exhaustion and grief. Each step brought flashbacks: Ethan’s tiny hand in mine as we walked up for bedtime, his giggles echoing when he tried to slide down the banister on a pillow. I pushed open the heavy front doors. The foyer was dimly lit, shadows pooling in corners. Silence hit me like a physical blow,no patter of little feet, no joyful shouts, no soft breathing from the monitor I used to keep by my bed.

“Ethan?” I called out anyway, the name breaking on a sob. “Baby, Mommy’s home…”

Nothing. Only the rain drumming on the roof. I stood dripping on the marble floor, leaving muddy footprints like wounds on the pristine surface. The grand staircase loomed. I gripped the banister, knuckles white, and forced myself upward. Memories assaulted me with every step. The night he had his first bad attack here,I had carried him down these stairs to the car, heart pounding. Now I climbed alone.

The hallway to the family wing stretched endlessly. Ancestral portraits glared down with cold judgment. I ignored them, my breaths coming in ragged gasps. The nursery door waited at the end. My sanctuary. Our world. Heart hammering, I reached for the knob.

The door swung open.

And my world shattered all over again.

The room was gone.

Erased.

The crib, where I had rocked him through countless nights, was missing. The changing table, the shelves of books, the colorful rug where we built block towers and played airplanes, all vanished. The walls, once painted with soft clouds and soaring planes, were now bare and stark white. The floorboards lay exposed, cold and unforgiving. Not a single sock, not a crayon drawing, not even the blue star blanket he loved. It was as if Ethan Blackwood had never drawn a single breath in this mansion.

“No…” The whisper turned into a wail. “No! No, no, no!”

I stumbled into the center of the emptiness, spinning wildly, searching for any trace. My screams ripped through the mansion. “Where is everything? Where is his crib? His clothes? His blanket? You can’t just wipe him away like he never mattered!”

Tears flooded my face. I dropped to my knees on the hard floor, the same spot where Ethan had taken his first wobbly steps toward me, arms outstretched. I pounded my fists against the wood until they bled, pain flaring bright but meaningless. “He was here! He laughed here! He called for me here when his chest hurt! You monsters erased him!”

Sobs convulsed my body. I curled into a tight ball, rocking violently, the toy airplane pressed so hard against my chest it left bruises. “Ethan, my sweet baby… they took you from me twice. First your life, now your memory. How am I supposed to live in a house that pretends you never existed?”

Hours blurred in that barren room. I screamed until my voice failed, reduced to hoarse whispers. I recounted every memory aloud: his birth, his first word “Mommy”, the way he’d snuggle during storms. “I love you bigger than the sky,” I repeated over and over, the phrase we shared every night. Thunder rumbled outside in answer. Rain lashed the windows as if the heavens wept with me.

Exhaustion eventually pulled me under on the cold floor. When I woke, shivering and aching, the reality crashed down anew. I sat up slowly, clutching the airplane and a single blue block with the letter E that I had found in a corner crack,a tiny, defiant survivor. “They tried to erase you,” I told myself through fresh tears. “But I won’t let them.”

I wandered the stripped room one last time, fingers trailing where his crib had stood. Leaving it felt like abandoning him again. I closed the door softly and leaned against it, more tears falling. The mansion loomed vast and hollow around me. Adrian’s quarters were probably untouched. Vanessa’s taste lingered in the art and furnishings she had influenced.

Downstairs in the kitchen, covered dishes from sympathetic staff sat untouched. I poured water with shaking hands and sat at the island where Ethan used to “help” bake cookies, his little stool now gone. “He’s really gone,” I said aloud, voice breaking. “And they cleared him out like garbage while I buried him.”

Anger wove through the grief. Adrian must have ordered the cleaning. Efficient. Heartless. While I screamed at the graveside, someone had sanitized the evidence of our son. The pain fueled a darker spark inside, the gentle wife was dying. Something harder was emerging from the ashes.

I roamed the halls for what felt like hours, discovering more voids: the playroom stripped, height marks on doorframes painted over. Each one brought fresh screams and floods of tears. By nightfall, I collapsed into my cold bed, curling around the airplane and block. “Goodnight, my love,” I whispered. “Mommy will find a way…”

Sleep came fitfully, haunted by his voice calling for help. Then, in the dead of night, a sound pulled me awake,a faint creak from downstairs. Footsteps?

Heart racing, I sat up. The mansion should be empty. But someone was moving in the shadows.
