Chapter 3

Alena POV

The puzzle pieces clicked into place, cold and sharp. Koby, impulsive and eager for novelty, influenced by Bianca's lax approach, had likely ignored the tiny allergen warning on the box or the toy packaging itself. He had always been drawn to the forbidden, the "fun" things I, in my past "overbearing" state, had restricted. I remembered countless battles over a simple cookie, a small candy. Back then, my heart had ached with worry, my stomach twisted with anxiety. I had been vigilant, almost desperate in my care for him, a child born prematurely with such severe allergies that even a trace could be fatal. I had made sure our home was a sanctuary, free of all his allergens. But Karl, always undermining me, had encouraged Koby to see my caution as a leash.

Now, as I pieced together the sequence of events—the new cereal box, the free toy, Koby's history of craving sugary treats, his accusations that I was "too strict"—I felt a detached validation. My past self, the one driven by a desperate, anxious love, had been right all along. She had just been dismissed, called unstable. The irony was not lost on me, but it stirred no deep emotion, only a faint sense of vindication.

Still at the hospital, awaiting Koby's discharge, I found myself in the children's ward. A small, familiar figure with a tangled mass of dark hair sat quietly on a bench. Ella. Javier's niece. She looked up, her eyes wide with recognition.

"Alena!" she exclaimed, her face lighting up. She launched herself at me, her small arms wrapping around my legs.

A genuine smile, perhaps the first since my memory returned, touched my lips. "Ella, sweetie!" I knelt, hugging her back. Her warmth, her unadulterated affection, felt real, not like the forced emotional charades I now played with my "family."

Javier appeared, a concerned frown on his face. He was tall, kind, his eyes gentle. He had visited his aunt, a fellow patient, at the facility where I had been held. During those blank months, he had been an anchor, offering quiet conversations and steady kindness. He had known me as simply Alena, the woman with no past, no baggage.

"Alena! It's so good to see you," he said, his smile genuine. "What are you doing here?"

"Koby had an allergic reaction," I explained, the words coming out easily. "He's stable now, thankfully."

Javier's eyes widened, a flicker of concern. "Oh, that's terrible! Is he okay?"

"Yes, he will be fine," I replied. "But what about Ella? Is your aunt okay?"

Ella chimed in, "My auntie is getting better! She's just a bit lonely without you. She talks about you all the time."

"She truly missed you, Alena," Javier added, his gaze lingering on me. "She seemed to brighten up whenever you were around. She said you always had a way of making her laugh."

A faint warmth spread through me. It was pleasant, a soft echo of a feeling, not the intense, suffocating emotions of my past. "I missed her too," I confessed, meaning it.

Javier's aunt had been a sweet, elderly woman who shared tales of her youth and taught me simple embroidery. We spent hours together, me, a blank slate, and her, a repository of gentle memories. She had offered a quiet, unassuming companionship that felt safe.

"It's... good to see you outside of the facility," Javier said, a slight hesitation in his voice. "I was worried about you, after... after you left so suddenly."

I nodded. "I understand. Karl took me home. My memory is fully back now." I chose to omit the details of the 'why' and 'how,' the forced amnesia, the betrayal. It was too raw, even for my numb self.

A sigh of relief escaped Javier. "That's wonderful news! I was so concerned. I hope you're doing well, truly." He seemed to catch himself, realizing his intensity. "I mean, it's good you're back home, with your family." He quickly corrected himself, his cheeks flushing slightly.

I found myself chuckling, a light, genuine sound that surprised even me. "It's alright, Javier. I appreciate your concern."

Just then, the double doors of the emergency room burst open. Karl stormed through, his face thunderous, Koby clutching his hand. Bianca trailed behind them, her expression a mix of concern and veiled triumph. Karl's eyes scanned the waiting area, settling on me. His gaze narrowed, then flickered to Javier, his face instantly contorting into a mask of rage.

His eyes lingered on my smile, his perfectly sculpted visage twisting. He hated my ease, my genuine amusement with Javier. It was a stark contrast to the distant, placid expression I usually wore around him. He marched towards us, his steps heavy.

"Alena! Koby is crying for you!" Karl snapped, his voice tight with barely contained fury. He snatched Koby from Bianca's side.

I felt a slight irritation, but no real alarm. "I was just checking on him, Karl." I walked towards Koby, reaching for his forehead. It was still warm, but the blotches had faded.

Koby flinched back, hiding behind Karl's legs. He pointed a trembling finger at Javier. "Who is he?! Why are you smiling at him?!"

I tried to act naturally. "Koby, this is Javier. He's a friend."

"You don't have friends, Mommy!" Koby wailed, his voice accusing. "You only care about Dad and me!"

I stopped, my hand still outstretched. My mind, observing this interaction, noted the parental alienation. Karl had been at work, turning Koby against me even before the hypnosis. "Koby, it's not polite to speak that way. Javier is a kind person."

Koby's face crumpled. "No! I don't like him! Go away! You're not my mom!" He pushed at me with his small hands, a chilling echo of the past.

My emotional numbness held strong. His words, his rejection, did not pierce me. But the scene was becoming a spectacle. I looked at Karl, whose face was now a mask of cold satisfaction. Bianca wore a similar smirk.

"Koby, darling, Mommy is upset. She needs some space," Karl said, his voice dripping with condescension. He shot a menacing look at Javier. "Some people don't understand that."

The implied threat was clear. Javier, sensing the escalating tension, stepped back, a look of concern etched on his face. "Alena, I'll go. Call me if you need anything." He gave me a quick, reassuring nod, then pulled a confused Ella away.

As Javier left, Koby's cries intensified, a heartbroken wail that turned heads in the waiting room. "Mommy! Don't leave! Don't go!" He screamed, reaching for me as Karl pulled him tighter.

I paused, looking at Koby. His face was red and splotchy again, this time from tears, not an allergic reaction. Behind the rage, for a flicker of a second, I saw it—a flash of genuine terror in his eyes, the same confusion I had glimpsed during the kitchen argument months ago. He was a child drowning in a war he didn't start. But the trauma had hardened me. The raw, guttural sound of his sorrow, once my undoing, now hit a wall of indifference. I turned and walked away, not looking back. I did not see the true agony on Koby's face, the desperate plea for a mother he barely recognized. I did not see his small body shaking, or Karl's confused, angry attempts to comfort him. My back was to them, my ears deaf to his pain.

But the seed had been planted—a flicker of doubt that Koby's allegiance to Bianca was not as absolute as it seemed.
