My Husband Announced His Mistress’s Baby at Our Anniversary Gala, Then Asked Me to Stay Chapter 1

SOPHIE'S POV

Ten years ago tonight, I married Ryan Bennett in a borrowed dress at a courthouse in Boston, back when his company was two rented desks and a coffee maker that leaked.

Tonight, three hundred people in black tie filled the Grand Ballroom of the Fairmont to celebrate his empire's annual charity gala. Ryan had always liked that the date fell on our anniversary.

"Two birds, one stone," he'd joked the first year.

I'd stopped finding it funny around year six. But I still planned every detail. The ivory peonies, the string quartet, the auction catalog, the seating chart I'd revised eleven times. This year I'd handled nearly all of it myself, because this year was supposed to be different.

For eight months, Ryan and I had been building the Bennett Children's Foundation into something bigger together. Pediatric care for families who couldn't afford it. I'd seen the draft of his speech sitting on his desk last week, the words *a new chapter* underlined twice.

I thought he meant us.

Twenty minutes into the cocktail hour, I was double-checking the auction lots with our event coordinator when the room shifted. Conversations stalled. Heads turned toward the entrance.

Chloe Marsh, Ryan's vice president of operations, walked in wearing floor-length crimson silk with a slit up to her thigh. It wasn't the kind of dress executives wore to company events. It was the kind of dress women wore when they wanted to be looked at.

She crossed the ballroom without hesitation and sat down at the head table. At Ryan's right hand.

In my seat.

"Mrs. Bennett?" the coordinator said. "Should I ask her to move?"

I didn't answer. I was staring at Chloe's throat.

A platinum chain. A cluster of pear-cut diamonds arranged like a falling raindrop, with a single sapphire at the center. I'd sketched that design myself on a napkin in Paris, our fifth anniversary trip, and Ryan had tucked the napkin into his wallet and promised he'd have it made someday.

Three months ago, he told me it was finally being made. Then he told me there'd been a problem with the custom setting. The jeweler needed more time.

"It'll be worth the wait, Soph," he'd said, kissing my forehead on his way out to the airport.

Now it was resting against another woman's collarbone.

I set down the auction binder and started toward the head table. I didn't know what I was going to say yet. I only knew my legs were moving.

Before I got halfway there, the lights dimmed. The quartet stopped. Ryan stepped onto the stage, tall and polished in a tailored tux, smiling the smile that had landed on the cover of *Forbes* twice.

"Good evening, everyone," he said into the microphone. "Before we get started, I want to thank someone very important to me."

I stopped beside a pillar, my pulse loud in my ears.

"This past year has been the hardest of my life, professionally and personally." His gaze found the head table. "And through all of it, one person never left my side. Chloe, thank you."

Polite applause. Chloe pressed a hand to her chest.

My hand curled around the edge of the pillar.

"Which brings me to some news." Ryan paused, and for one stupid second, I still thought he might say the word *foundation*. "Chloe is fourteen weeks pregnant. And the baby is mine."

The ballroom went dead silent.

Nobody clapped. Nobody moved. Someone's fork hit a plate, and the sound rang out like a gunshot.

Then, slowly, I felt the eyes. Dozens of them, then hundreds, turning toward me. The wife. The woman who'd hand-written every one of their place cards.

And just like that, the past three months rearranged themselves into something ugly and obvious.

The sudden business trips to Chicago, Miami, San Francisco. The way Chloe once mentioned the Ritz-Carlton's rooftop bar on a trip I hadn't even known the hotel for. The necklace that was always *almost ready*.

Fourteen weeks.

Chloe rose from my seat, her eyes red and shining. She took the microphone from Ryan with trembling fingers.

"I'm sorry," she said softly. "I asked him not to do this tonight. I never wanted to hurt anyone."

Ryan slid an arm around her waist. Then he leaned into the mic.

"I'm tired of hiding my child."

Something inside me went very quiet. Not broken. Just still, like the moment before glass hits the floor.

I picked up my clutch from the nearest table and walked out through the service doors. Nobody stopped me.

Backstage smelled like floor polish and catering steam. I'd made it as far as the loading corridor when I heard his footsteps behind me.

"Sophie. Wait."

I turned around. Some foolish part of me still braced for *I'm sorry*. Ten years had to be worth at least that much.

Ryan stopped a few feet away and adjusted his cufflinks.

"You're not leaving tonight."

I stared at him. "Excuse me?"

"We have two hours left. The auction, the pledge drive." He spoke quickly, the way he did in board meetings when he'd already decided the outcome. "The Hendersons, the Okafors, and Margaret Doyle are here because of you. They don't know me, they know you. If you walk out, they walk out, and that's three million dollars gone."

"You just told three hundred people you got another woman pregnant," I said. "On our anniversary. And you're worried about the pledge drive?"

"I'm worried about sick kids who need that money." He exhaled through his nose. "Look, I know the timing wasn't ideal."

"The timing." I laughed, and it came out sharp. "Was the necklace also bad timing, Ryan? Or did the jeweler just deliver it to the wrong address?"

His jaw tightened. He didn't answer.

That silence told me more than any confession could.

"Whatever happens between us," he said finally, lowering his voice, "don't punish three hundred guests."

I looked at him for a long moment. At the man I'd once watched cry over a rejected loan application at our kitchen table. At the stranger standing in his place now, asking me to clean up the mess he'd made in front of everyone we knew.

He thought he was calling on my sense of duty. Maybe he was.

But I was also thinking about Margaret Doyle, eighty-one years old, who'd told me last spring that her granddaughter had spent six months in a children's hospital. About the families our foundation was supposed to help.

None of them had done this to me.

"Fine," I said.

Relief washed over his face so fast it was almost insulting. He reached for my arm. I stepped back before he could touch me.

"Don't."

I walked past him and back into the ballroom.

For the next two hours, I smiled. I greeted the Okafors and thanked them for their continued support. I sat with Margaret and let her squeeze my hand without a word about what she'd just witnessed. I took the stage for the auction and kept the bids climbing, laughing at the right moments, never once looking toward the head table where Chloe sat touching her necklace.

When the final paddle went down, we'd raised four point two million dollars. A record.

The applause was the loudest of the night. I accepted it without blinking.

At midnight, the last guest slipped into the elevator. The staff began stacking chairs. Ryan sank onto the edge of the head table, loosening his bow tie, and let out a long breath like a man who'd survived a storm.

"You were incredible tonight," he said. "Seriously. Can we go home and talk now?"

I walked over to him. His half-finished glass of scotch sat on the white tablecloth, a ring of condensation spreading beneath it.

I slid my wedding band off my finger. It came loose easier than I expected, as if it had been waiting.

I set it down beside his glass. The small click of gold against the table seemed to echo through the empty ballroom.

Ryan looked at the ring. Then at me.

"No," I said.

"Sophie—"

"You can go home with the mother of your child."
