Chapter 5

I gripped the edge of the hallway wall hard enough to feel the cold plaster bite into my palm, anchoring myself against it so the trembling would not show. The corridor of the old Bellucci house had gone very still, the kind of stillness that settles over a room when something is about to be broken and everyone in it already knows. The grandfather clock at the far end marked the seconds with its slow, indifferent pulse, and each tick landed against the silence like a knuckle on a coffin lid.

Lorenzo's impatience filled the space between us, unmistakable, a pressure I could feel against my skin.

"Adriana, why are you being so unreasonable?" His voice rose, just slightly, the charm thinning at the edges. "Nobody is perfect. Where has your tolerance gone?"

I looked at him and could not find the man I thought I knew. This was a man who had once stood in this very house and watched Bianca and her mother drive me to the edge of the rooftop, to the place where the only thing left to decide was whether to step off. He had seen it. He had pulled me back from it with his own hands.

Once, he had been willing to set himself against them for my sake, to raise his voice in a household where raising one's voice could cost a man his standing, to burn with a fury that frightened even the soldiers in the corridor. He had defended me when defending me was dangerous.

What on earth had turned him? What had taken the man who would have bled for me and set him here, in this hallway, with his shoulders squared toward me and his loyalty already pledged elsewhere?

I let the pain rise. I did not push it down the way I had learned to push everything down in this family, the way you learn to swallow blood so the man holding the knife does not see you flinch. I let it fill my chest until it spilled out of me, and I told Lorenzo, word by word, each one set down like a stone.

"Unless she dies before my eyes, I will never forgive her."

The veins at his temple stood out. His forehead was throbbing, and I watched the temper gather behind his eyes the way a storm gathers over the harbor before the rain.

It was the same look he used to wear when he raged at Bianca and her mother on my behalf. The very same. And that was the cruelty of it, that the expression that had once meant he loved me now meant he was preparing to wound me, and the face had not changed at all, only the direction of the blade.

"Adriana." He bit the name off. "How did you become so bitter after just two years? If you can't find it in yourself to forgive her, then at least apologize to Bianca. I can't stand the thought of people in this thing of ours mocking my promised wife as a spiteful, resentful woman. Do you understand what that does to my name?"

There it was. His name. Not my wound. His name.

A muscle worked in his jaw, and then he laughed, half a beat too early, a short ugly sound with no warmth in it, and his hand went to the knot of his tie and tugged it as though to straighten it. It was already straight. It was always already straight. I had watched him do it a hundred times across ten years and only now, with the cold settling into my hands, did I understand what it meant. It meant the man underneath the charm had run out of things to say that were true.

"Your mother's decision to end her life was her own weakness." He said it plainly, the way a capo reports a debt that has gone bad. "If she had thought about you, about how young you were, your father would never have had to bring another woman into this house. Don't lay all your misfortune at Bianca's door. Her mother made mistakes. But she didn't deserve to die for them. And if you, like your mother before you, are going to stubbornly wallow in your own misery, then it's no wonder you're plagued by nightmares."

He spat the word nightmares through his teeth.

The revulsion that flashed across his face was unmistakable to me. I had stood close enough to this man to know every flicker of feeling that ever crossed it, and I knew disgust when I saw it. He was disgusted. By me. By the broken thing he had once held in the dark.

So this was where it had come to. The man who had sworn before the family dead to protect me for the length of his life was, in the end, sick to death of being woken in the night by a woman who could not stop dreaming about the household that had nearly killed her.

The widow's death had hung over this bloodline like smoke, and somewhere along the way he had decided I was the smoke, the stain, the thing dragging his rise down into the dark with it. All my misfortune, all my pain, every wound this family had ever pressed into me, he had gathered up and sharpened into a single blade, and now he was driving it into me himself, leaving me scarred and broken all over again, in the same house, by the same hand that had once bound the wounds.

Once, the man who would feel his own chest ache and his own eyes fill at the mere mention of my nightmares had held me against him and made promises into my hair.

That man was gone. The one standing in front of me only wore his face.

I did not raise my voice. I did not weep, though the corridor blurred at its edges and the ticking of the clock seemed suddenly very far away, the way sound goes thin underwater. I stood very still, the way you learn to stand in a family where any movement can be read as a threat, and I let my right hand drift to my left, to the bare spot below the knuckle where his betrothal stone had sat for ten years. The skin there was paler than the rest, worn smooth, a small empty ring of nothing.

I pressed my thumb against it. I smoothed the bare skin once, slowly, the way you might close a dead man's eyes. Then I folded my hands together and was perfectly, terribly calm.

Anyone who had truly known me would have understood that gesture, would have read it the way Don Marchetti's people across the water might one day read it, the way the old soldiers who served my father had always read it in the women of our blood. It meant the matter was finished. It meant that somewhere behind my still face, in a room he would never be permitted to enter again, I had already decided to leave.

Lorenzo did not know me at all. He saw only that I had stopped arguing, and his shoulders eased, and the temper drained out of his temple, and something almost like satisfaction settled over him, as though he believed he had won. He straightened the tie that did not need straightening one more time.

I looked at the man I had bankrolled out of nothing, the soldier I had raised up on my father's hidden money and my father's old connections, the man whose climb through the rackets I had paid for with everything that was ever mine, and I felt the last of the warmth go out of me, quietly, the way a candle gutters in a sealed room with no one left to notice.

He thought the silence was surrender.

It was the sound of a door closing.
