Chapter 6

"Adriana, as long as I draw breath, no ghost from that house, no monster out of your childhood, will ever touch you again."

He had once spoken words like those to pull me up out of the dark, his hands the only thing between me and the drowning. He had been the one to reach down into the abyss and drag me back into the light. And now he was the one standing over the edge, pressing his palm flat against my chest, shoving me back down into it.

For Bianca's sake, he had decided I deserved it.

The whole apartment had gone still around us, that particular silence that settles over a room when something irreversible has just been said and everyone in it knows it. The leather of the long couch, the cold gleam of the marble underfoot, the faint trace of his cologne still hanging in the air over the harsher note of the cheap perfume she favored. All of it pressed in. I was trembling, and I could not make it stop. My fingers had been gripping the edge of the hallway wall for balance, and they failed me. I staggered backward, the strength simply gone out of my legs.

Lorenzo moved fast, the way men in our world are trained to move, and caught me before I went down. His arm closed around me out of pure reflex, and that was almost the worst part of it, that his body still wanted to protect me even while his mouth had spent the last hour cutting me open. It was then, looking down, that he saw the state of my knee, swollen and gone purple-dark beneath the skin where I had struck it.

He crouched at once, the careful, intent crouch of a man who knew how to read an injury.

"How in God's name did you do this to your knee?" His voice dropped into that low, coaxing register he had always used on me, the one that used to feel like safety.

"Forget it." He didn't even wait for me to answer. "If you won't be the one to apologize to her, then I'll apologize for you. But you can't carry yourself this way anymore, Adriana. You can't keep being so cold to family."

Family. He said the word like it cost him nothing, like the woman who had ruptured my eardrum as a girl and burned everything I loved was simply family I had been too proud to forgive.

I tore my hand out of his with everything I had left in me, and the motion sent a fresh bolt of pain through my knee that I welcomed because it was clean, because it was honest, because it was the only thing in the room that was. My face had gone bloodless. I knew it had. I lifted my arm and pointed at the door.

"Get out." My voice came out scraped down to almost nothing. "All of you. Get out."

Lorenzo, reading the tremor in me the way he read everything, decided I was breaking and not deciding, and that was his oldest mistake. He reached for me again, arms opening to fold me into the kind of embrace that had ended a hundred arguments between us across ten years. As if comfort offered by the hand that struck the blow could ever again be comfort.

But it was Bianca who moved first.

Tears were already sliding down her face, perfectly, the way they always came to her on cue, never smearing, never ugly. She bent at the waist in a deep, theatrical bow, the kind a soldier gives a Don he means to flatter, and her stepsister's voice came out trembling and sweet.

"Adriana, I'm going now. Please. Please don't torment yourself over me." And as she said it, her hand drifted up to the heavy stone at her throat, the largest she was wearing, and turned it inward against her palm, hiding the gleam of it the way a thief covers a thing she is afraid will be recognized and named.

Then she turned to leave, and she turned too fast, far too fast, her shoulder swinging wide as though the floor had tilted beneath her, and she crashed into the doorframe and went down sideways with a small broken cry.

Lorenzo released me instantly. He let me drop, let my ruined knee take my whole weight, and lunged for her, and the two of them tumbled together out into the hallway in a tangle of limbs and silk. And still, somehow, in all that careful choreography, her head found the edge of the doorframe. It struck with a sound that turned my stomach, and the skin split, red blooming bright and fast, a thin line of blood threading down toward her temple.

He scrambled up off the floor, gathering her against his chest, and ran for the elevator like a man carrying something precious out of a burning building.

"Bianca, does it hurt? Tell me where. I'm taking you to a doctor, right now, hold on to me."

The doorway emptied. The corridor light hummed. And then there was nothing at all, only the awful quiet rushing back in to fill the space where they had been, settling over the marble and the leather and the empty hallway like dust over a sealed room.

My heart went down somewhere I could not follow it.

Ten years. Ten years of knowing him, of being known by him. Ten years of love built brick by brick, of my father's hidden holdings signed into his name, of every door in this world I had opened for him with money and blood and the old respect the Bellucci name still commanded in certain rooms. And we had arrived here. At a hallway gone silent. At the cold understanding that there was nothing left between us but the distance.

I stood there until the trembling slowed. Then, without quite deciding to, I lifted my left hand and pressed my thumb against the bare strip of skin on my finger where the betrothal stone used to sit. I smoothed the empty place once, slow, feeling the faint hollow the ring had worn there over the years. Then I folded my hands together in my lap and let them be still.

I took out my phone.

I booked passage out for the day of the union ceremony itself, the very day the two bloodlines were meant to be joined, a seat across the line into Lunaria where Don Marchetti's territory began and Lorenzo Falcone's word meant nothing.

Seven days left. Just enough time to clear away everything that had ever belonged to the life I was leaving. The diary. The supplies. The dead weight of every memory I had let myself keep.

Lorenzo had been right about one thing, the only thing. A person had to look forward.

So from this hour onward, I would cut myself clean away from all of it, every joy and every sorrow that bore his name, the way you only survive walking out of an arrangement like ours. Quietly. Completely. And under no protection but my own, until I reached the man who had once served my father and might still honor the debt.
