Chapter 4

The grandfather clock in the corner of the study counted out the seconds like a patient executioner, and for a long moment that was the only sound in the room. The air had gone heavy with the smell of old leather and the faint sweetness of Bianca's perfume, a scent I had learned to associate with cruelty long before I ever knew the word for it. Lorenzo stood across from me in his pressed shirt, his hands open, his voice smoothed down to the gentle tone men use when they want a woman to believe they are being kind.

"Adriana, Bianca was only a girl back then. She didn't understand right from wrong. She's carried the guilt for years. She's already apologized to you. Why hold the past so close?"

The past. He said the word as though it were a small thing, a coat one could simply set down and walk away from. As though the years that had thrown me into an endless abyss were nothing more than an old grievance to be smoothed over with wine and a smile.

Refusing to forgive Bianca had never been about being petty.

He, of all men, knew that. He was the one who had taken me to the doctor in those years, who had sat in the dim waiting room while strangers tended to what the household had done. He knew better than anyone how deeply I loathed the woman who had married into my father's broken house and the daughter she had brought with her like a blade hidden in silk. He had held my hand once and sworn, in the dark, that he would stand between me and the monsters.

And yet he had chosen to fall in love with one of them. He had chosen to stand at Bianca's side and turn his back to mine.

When Lorenzo reached for my hand, his fingers warm and certain, trying to broker peace between me and the woman who had spent my childhood teaching me what fear tasted like, I struck his hand away.

The sound cracked through the still room. Somewhere beyond the door, a soldier shifted his weight, the floorboard betraying him, then went silent again, the way men in this house had learned to go silent when something dangerous moved in the air.

"Lorenzo. What gives you the right to ask me to forgive them?" The question came out sharp, honed.

Behind my father's back they had abused me. They had poisoned his ear until he looked at his own blood with contempt. And when he was finally in the ground, when the tribute owed to the family dead came due, they had not so much as lit a candle for him. They had let the name rot.

Lorenzo looked down at the back of his hand, where my palm had left it red, and his brow drew together in that wounded, baffled way, as though I were the one being unreasonable, as though I had wronged some delicate decency he imagined himself to possess.

"Adriana, I'm trying to help you." He said it slowly, reasonably, a capo accustomed to men falling into line beneath that reasonable voice. "You have no father, no mother now. Bianca and her people are the only family you have left. Why cling to the past and keep suffering for it?"

A pause. He let it sit, the way he let silence sit when he wanted a thing to land.

"You have to move forward. Don't you?"

The words were dressed as comfort, but I had spent ten years learning the man beneath them, and I saw the impatience bleeding through that composed face. It was always there now, just under the surface, the way a current runs beneath still water. The tenderness was gone. The care that had once lived in his voice, the thing I had bankrolled his entire climb to keep, had simply gone out of him like a candle pinched between two fingers.

I felt my heart, already battered and broken, crumble into dust.

The pain of it was so vast, so total, that it stole the words from my throat. I stood there in that room full of old money and older sins and could not speak.

Bianca's eyes lifted to mine, brimming with sorrow she had practiced in some mirror, and beneath the wet sheen of it glinted the old thing, the smugness, the provocation I had known since I was a child small enough to hide in cupboards. Her hand drifted to the great cold stone at her throat, the centerpiece she had no doubt cut and fenced through her own clean front, and she turned it slowly inward, hiding the gem against her palm, an instinct old as theft itself.

"Adriana." Her voice was honey poured over a wound. "It's all right if you can't forgive me. I'll keep repenting. I'll keep feeling the guilt of it, every day, until you can accept me as your family. Even if we don't share blood."

The clock ticked. The soldier beyond the door did not breathe. Lorenzo watched me with that wounded, reasonable patience, waiting for me to bend the way I had always bent.

Beneath the fold of my own hands, my thumb found the bare place on my finger where a betrothal stone had so recently sat. I pressed it. I smoothed the empty skin once, slowly, feeling nothing there but the memory of weight, the ghost of a promise that had never once been mine to keep. Then I folded my hands and was still.

"Get out."
