Chapter 2

Time stopped.

The only sound was the frantic, desperate drumming of her own heart against her ribs.

Jonathon's gaze dropped. It swept over the scattered items on the floor, a king surveying the wreckage of a minor skirmish. His eyes paused on the paper.

Elena's breath hitched.

He bent down.

But his hand reached for her phone, not the report.

In that split second, she moved. She dropped to her knees, her movements clumsy with panic. Her cold fingers scrambled to gather her belongings, shoving them haphazardly back into the bag. The diagnostic report was the first thing she grabbed, crumpling it slightly in her haste.

Jonathon straightened up, watching her with an unreadable expression. A faint frown line appeared between his brows. He held her phone out to her.

"You went to the hospital today," he stated. It wasn't a question. He had seen the logo.

Her heart hammered against her chest. She clutched the bag to her body like a shield and forced herself to stand.

"Just a routine check-up," she said, her voice tight. She met his gaze, her chin held high. She needed to divert him, to throw him off balance.

A reckless, desperate idea sparked in her mind.

"Since your Hayleigh is back," she said, a sharp, challenging edge to her tone, "it's perfect timing. My lover has returned from Europe as well."

It was a complete fabrication, a lie born of pure, unadulterated desperation. A pathetic attempt to salvage a piece of her shattered pride.

The effect was instantaneous.

Jonathon's gray eyes narrowed, becoming sharp and dangerous. The air in the room grew heavy, charged with a sudden, palpable tension.

"Your lover?" he repeated, the words low and laced with an interrogative bite he didn't bother to conceal.

She saw it then-a flash of raw, possessive anger in his eyes. It was ironic. He didn't want her, but the thought of another man having her was an offense to his ego.

It was the most emotion he had shown her in three years.

"Yes," she pressed on, fueled by a bitter sense of triumph. "So the divorce is mutually agreeable. We can part amicably."

His jaw tightened. He took a step closer, his tall frame looming over her, a suffocating presence.

"Give me your medical report," he demanded, his voice returning to its cold, commanding tone.

She almost laughed. It wasn't concern. It was control. The Sharpe family's marital contracts included health clauses. He was just closing a business deal, ensuring all assets were in order.

"Jonathon," she said, a genuine, mocking smile touching her lips for the first time. "We're getting a divorce. My health is no longer your concern."

They stood there, locked in a silent battle of wills.

His phone rang, the shrill sound cutting through the tense atmosphere.

He pulled it from his pocket. A glance at the screen and the icy mask on his face melted away. A softness she had never seen before entered his eyes.

Hayleigh. It could only be Hayleigh.

He answered, turning slightly away from her, but not enough. He didn't care if she heard.

"Hayleigh? Don't worry," his voice was a low, soothing murmur. "I'll be there soon."

The casual intimacy of his tone was a fresh wound. He was giving another woman the gentleness, the reassurance she had starved for.

She watched him, feeling invisible. A ghost in her own home.

He ended the call and pocketed the phone. He grabbed his car keys from a small silver tray on the console table, his movements efficient and purposeful. He didn't look at her again.

He walked to the door, his footsteps echoing on the marble. He paused with his hand on the doorknob, as if remembering a final piece of business.

He looked back at her, his expression once again cold and remote.

"City Hall. Nine a. m. tomorrow," he said. "Bring the signed papers."

It wasn't a request. It was an order.

She wanted to scream. She wanted to throw the diagnostic report at his feet and tell him everything. To ask him if their three years together meant nothing at all.

But the words were trapped in her throat, choked by a wave of despair.

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind him.

Moments later, the sound of his car's engine faded into the distance.

The silence that followed was absolute.

Elena's body swayed. She reached out a hand to steady herself against the cold wall, her legs no longer able to support the weight of her grief.

The tears she had held back finally came, a silent, wrenching flood.
