My Groom’s Mistress Staged Her Own Suicide to Destroy Me Chapter 1

The dress cost fourteen thousand dollars and fit like a second skin.

I knew because I'd stood in three separate fittings, turning slowly under fluorescent lights while a seamstress with pins between her teeth made it perfect. Ivory silk, clean lines, no lace — I'd never been a lace person. The kind of dress that said I know exactly who I am.

I sat in front of the vanity mirror in the bridal suite of the Hargrove Hotel and looked at the woman wearing it. Hair pinned. Makeup done. Hands folded in her lap like she was waiting for a meeting to begin.

My phone buzzed on the vanity. I picked it up.

I almost didn't click the link. It came from a secondary account I'd flagged weeks ago — a burner, badly disguised, the kind of thing someone sets up when they want to feel anonymous but don't actually know how. The profile photo was a generic cityscape. The post was set to friends-only, but whoever ran the account had forgotten to scrub a tagged location.

City Hall. Two days ago.

The photo was slightly blurred, the way phone cameras blur when someone's hand isn't quite steady. Chase in a dark suit I recognized — the charcoal Brioni he'd told me was at the dry cleaner. And beside him, in a cream wrap dress, holding a pen above a marriage certificate, was Dallas Salazar.

His assistant. The poor intern, as his mother liked to say. The girl who'd been bringing him coffee for eight months and apparently a great deal more.

I set the phone face-down on the vanity.

The room was very quiet. Outside the window, the city moved the way it always did — indifferent, continuous, unbothered by the specific weight of what I was holding. I could hear my own breathing. I watched my reflection and waited to feel something seismic, some internal collapse, the thing that was supposed to happen when five years ended in a blurred photograph.

Instead, I went still.

Not numb. Still. The way water goes still before it freezes.

I picked the phone back up and opened my messages. My assistant, Vera, answered before the second buzz.

*Pull everything on Riley Group. Legal exposure, contract dependencies, the full file. I want it ready within the hour.*

Her response came in eleven seconds: *Already on it.*

I set the phone down again and looked at the dress.

Fourteen thousand dollars. Five years. One photograph.

I picked up my lipstick and touched up the corner of my mouth.

---

Chase arrived at 11:47. The ceremony was scheduled for eleven.

He came through the door with the particular energy of a man who had already rehearsed his entrance — slightly breathless, tie loosened just enough to suggest urgency, eyes carrying a practiced weight of concern. He smelled of his own cologne and underneath it, faint but unmistakable, the jasmine that Dallas Salazar wore like a signature.

I'd noticed that perfume on his jacket three months ago. He'd told me it was a client's. I had filed that information away in the same place I filed everything I wasn't ready to use yet.

"Kate." He crossed the room and took both my hands. His grip was warm, deliberate. "I am so sorry. There's been an emergency — Dallas collapsed this morning, they think it's her heart, and the optics of going forward while one of our employees is in the hospital—"

"Chase."

He stopped.

"Is there anything else you want to tell me?"

The pause lasted exactly one beat too long. Then he looked directly into my eyes — that particular, sustained eye contact he used when he needed to be believed — and said, "No. There's nothing else."

I looked at him for a moment. At the careful steadiness of his gaze. At the jasmine still hanging in the air between us.

"All right," I said.

---

I walked down the aisle alone.

The guests went quiet when I appeared at the back of the room — two hundred people in their best clothes, turning in their seats, reading the absence of a groom the way you read a weather shift. I heard the murmurs start. I kept walking.

Chase was at the altar, phone in hand, still composing whatever story he'd planned to tell. He looked up when I reached the front. Something moved across his face — relief, confusion, the beginning of a smile.

I stepped past him to the venue's AV panel.

I'd had Vera pull the security footage from Riley Group's internal system two hours ago. It took me forty seconds to connect my phone to the display system. The screen behind the altar — the one meant for our wedding slideshow — flickered once and filled with Chase's office.

The timestamp read six weeks ago. Chase was on one knee. Dallas Salazar stood in front of him, hands over her mouth, eyes bright. The audio was clear enough that the room could hear every word.

The silence lasted about three seconds. Then it broke completely.

I took the microphone from the stand.

"I want to thank everyone for being here today." My voice was even. I had not planned what I was going to say, but the words came without effort, the way things do when you've already made the decision that matters. "Chase and I won't be getting married. Not today. Not at all."

Chase grabbed my arm. "Kate — Kate, listen to me, I can explain—"

"You already did," I said. "You looked me in the eye and told me there was nothing else."

I handed the microphone back to the stand. Across the room, Vera was already on her feet, phone to her ear, moving toward the exit with the quiet efficiency of someone executing a plan that had been ready for an hour.

I caught her eye.

"Cut everything," I said.

She nodded once and kept walking.

I smoothed the front of my fourteen-thousand-dollar dress, turned away from Chase Riley for the last time, and walked out of the Hargrove Hotel into the flat white light of a Tuesday morning.

Behind me, I heard him call my name.

I didn't stop.
