Chapter 2

The Maybach pulled away from the concrete curb. The tires gripped the asphalt smoothly, merging onto the highway toward Manhattan.

Isabel settled into the plush leather seat. The cool, conditioned air hit her skin, a stark contrast to the suffocating heat of the prison yard.

Mr. Foster adjusted the rearview mirror. He reached over to the center console, retrieved a bottle of chilled sparkling water from the mini-fridge, and offered it backward.

Isabel took the bottle. The condensation wet her fingertips. She twisted the plastic cap off, the sharp hiss of escaping gas filling the quiet cabin. She took a slow sip. The freezing liquid slid down her throat, clearing the lingering fog in her brain.

She closed her eyes. She let her head rest against the headrest.

Instantly, the memories of the original host flooded her consciousness. The images flashed behind her eyelids like a violent movie reel.

She saw the grand staircase of the prep school. Jessye's hands violently shoving a classmate down the marble steps. The sickening crack of bone. Then Jessye dropping to her knees, crying hysterically, playing the perfect victim.

The memory shifted. The Cooper parents stood in the study, their faces cold and unmoved. They had listened to Jessye's tearful lies and demanded the original Isabel sign the confession. "For the sake of the family's reputation, and to protect Jessye's future, you must take responsibility." They were protecting a monster, and they didn't care that they were destroying their real daughter to do it.

Then came Kadin. Kadin standing in the courtroom, his face set with the same cold superiority he had worn in the prison parking lot. He used every ounce of his elite legal expertise to ensure the judge gave Isabel the maximum sentence. No parole. No mercy. He had looked her in the eye as the gavel fell, and he had smiled.

Isabel's eyes snapped open. Her grip on the water bottle tightened.

The thick plastic crinkled loudly under the sudden, crushing pressure of her fingers. Water spilled over the rim, dripping down her knuckles. A hot, visceral anger burned in her chest, tight and suffocating.

She flexed her fingers, watching the tendons shift under her pale skin. She tested the nerve responses. Then she lifted her right hand and pressed her index and middle fingers precisely against the suboccipital triangle at the base of her skull—the nerve cluster she had once used to disable a dark web target in under three minutes. A sharp, electric tingle shot down her spine. The neural pathways were flawless. Her past-life skills as The Surgeon were fully intact in this new body.

She set the crumpled bottle aside and wiped her hand dry with a calm, deliberate motion. The rage was still there, burning cold and quiet beneath her ribs. She would let it fuel her. She would dismantle the Cooper family piece by piece, and when they finally knelt at her feet, she would offer them the same mercy they had shown her.

"Estimated time of arrival?" Isabel asked. Her voice was calm, authoritative, and completely devoid of the fury boiling in her blood.

"We will reach the Vanderbilt estate in forty minutes, Ms. Jensen," Mr. Foster replied, his eyes flicking to the mirror, noting the terrifying stillness in her posture.

Miles away, the heavy oak front door of the Cooper mansion slammed shut.

Kadin stormed into the grand foyer. His face was pale, his breathing shallow and erratic. The lingering shock of the Maybach made his hands tremble slightly.

Jordy Cooper looked up from his tablet in the adjacent living room. He lounged on the velvet sofa, a glass of scotch in his hand.

"Where is the disgrace?" Jordy asked, his tone dripping with boredom. "Don't tell me she refused to get in the car."

Kadin unbuttoned his suit jacket aggressively. "She refused. She threw the credit card on the ground and got into a Maybach. Someone else sent a driver for her."

Jordy scoffed loudly. He took a sip of his scotch and rolled his eyes.

"A Maybach?" Jordy laughed. "She probably rented it with whatever cash she hid before the trial. It's a pathetic stunt to make us chase her."

Near the top of the grand staircase, Jessye Cooper hovered in the shadows. She clutched the wooden banister, eavesdropping on her brothers. She forced her breathing to quicken, pasting an anxious, terrified expression on her face.

Jessye walked down the stairs slowly. Perfect, crystal-clear tears welled in her eyes and spilled over her cheeks.

"Is she not coming back?" Jessye cried, her voice trembling perfectly. "She must hate me so much. I ruined her life, Jordy. She's going to come after me."

Jordy immediately put his glass down. He rushed to the bottom of the stairs and pulled Jessye into a tight, protective hug.

"Stop crying, Jess," Jordy murmured, stroking her hair. "Isabel is just being a manipulative bitch. She wants you to feel guilty."

"Exactly," Kadin agreed, walking over and patting Jessye's shoulder. "It's a pathetic show. Let her starve. She'll come crawling back when the rental car money runs out."

Jessye buried her face in Jordy's shoulder. Against the expensive fabric of his shirt, her lips curled into a malicious, satisfied smile.

She pulled back slightly, wiping her tears with delicate fingers. Her brothers fussed over her, guiding her back toward the stairs, promising to protect her.

Jessye climbed the stairs slowly, her posture fragile and wounded. But the moment she stepped into her private bedroom and closed the door behind her, the act dropped completely.

She walked to her vanity and sat down, studying her reflection in the mirror. Her tears had already dried. Her eyes were cold, calculating.

"You think escaping to some rental car and a cheap driver means you've won, Isabel?" Jessye whispered to her own reflection. "When you come crawling back—and you will—I will make sure you understand exactly what real despair feels like."

She picked up her phone and scrolled through her contacts, her thumb hovering over a name. A slow, venomous smile spread across her face.

Back in the Maybach, Isabel wiped the spilled water from her hand. She reached for the built-in tablet mounted on the back of the passenger seat.

She tapped the screen, entering a complex string of passcodes. The screen unlocked, pulling up the highly classified medical reports on Matilda Vanderbilt.

Helene Vanderbilt had sent these encrypted files to her dark web alias weeks ago.

Isabel's eyes darted across the glowing screen. She scanned the genetic markers, the blood panels, and the MRI scans. Her brain processed the data at a terrifying speed.

She identified the precise neuro-degenerative anomaly hiding in the brain stem. Modern medicine had failed because they were treating the symptoms, not the genetic collapse.

She mentally mapped out the exact acupuncture points along the spine. She visualized the depth and angle required to stimulate the dormant cellular repair mechanisms.

The Maybach slowed. The tires transitioned from asphalt to a private, tree-lined cobblestone road.

Huge wrought-iron gates loomed ahead. Heavily armed private security personnel in tactical gear stood on either side.

Mr. Foster rolled down his window. The humid air rushed in. He presented a digital credential on his phone to the head guard.

The guard checked his tablet. He looked past Mr. Foster, his eyes locking onto Isabel in the back seat. He gave a sharp, respectful nod.

The massive iron gates slowly swung open, the heavy hinges groaning like a beast stirring from sleep, swallowing the Maybach whole into the heart of the Vanderbilt empire.
