Chapter 3

The Maybach drove smoothly past the open iron gates. The tires crunched softly against the manicured gravel of the long driveway.

Isabel looked out the tinted window. Sprawling, perfectly symmetrical gardens stretched out on either side. At the end of the drive sat the massive stone architecture of the main Vanderbilt mansion, looking more like a fortress than a home.

The car glided to a halt at the grand entrance.

Mr. Foster quickly stepped out. He walked around the rear and pulled Isabel's door open.

Isabel stepped out onto the cobblestone. She adjusted the hem of her cheap, gray prison-issued shirt. Her posture was absolute. She did not look at the towering stone pillars with awe; she looked at them like she already owned them.

She walked up the wide stone steps. As she approached, the heavy oak double doors were pulled open automatically by two silent staff members.

Isabel entered the grand foyer. The air was cool and smelled faintly of lemon polish and old money. Her cheap shoes echoed sharply against the imported black-and-white marble floors.

From the adjacent living room, the sharp, angry sounds of a heated argument bled into the quiet hallway.

"Keeping her on life support is just prolonging the agony!" Preston Vanderbilt yelled.

Isabel followed the noise, pushing open the heavy living room door without hesitation.

Preston paced furiously across the Persian rug, his face red, his hands waving wildly. Eleanor Vanderbilt sat rigidly on a green velvet sofa, holding a porcelain teacup and taking a delicate sip.

"Preston is right, Helene. Hospice care is the only logical step. The doctors have given up."

Helene Vanderbilt stood by the massive stone fireplace. Her face was pale, her eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep, but her jaw was set in absolute defiance.

"I will not sign the Do Not Resuscitate order," Helene stated, her voice shaking but firm. "The specialist I contacted on the dark web guaranteed a viable treatment protocol. They are arriving today."

Preston stopped pacing. He let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "You are trusting an anonymous internet scammer with our mother's life? Are you insane, Helene?"

Isabel stepped into the wide archway of the living room. She stood still for a second, watching the family tear itself apart.

She cleared her throat. The sound was quiet, but it cut through the yelling like a knife.

The three Vanderbilts snapped their heads toward the archway simultaneously. They stared at the young girl standing in their pristine home.

Preston's eyes raked over Isabel. He took in her faded gray clothes, her lack of makeup, and her cheap shoes. His upper lip curled in disgust.

"How did a beggar get past the front gate?" Preston demanded, his voice booming. "Where is security?"

Helene stepped forward. Her eyes widened. She stared at Isabel's face, her mind racing as she matched the facial features to the prison files she had pulled during her background check.

"Isabel," Helene breathed out, taking another step. She turned to her siblings. "This is her. This is the medical consultant I've been communicating with."

Eleanor slammed her teacup down on the saucer. The porcelain clattered loudly. She burst into a sharp, mocking laugh.

"Is this a sick joke?" Eleanor sneered, pointing a manicured finger at Isabel. "She looks barely out of high school. She looks like she just crawled out of a dumpster."

Preston's face turned a darker shade of red. The veins in his forehead throbbed. "You have lost your mind, Helene! You are jeopardizing the dignity of this family for a child!"

Isabel ignored their screaming. Her face remained a mask of cold indifference.

She walked straight into the room, bypassing Preston entirely. She stopped at the glass coffee table and picked up the thick stack of Matilda's printed medical charts. She didn't flip through the pages. She didn't even look down at them. She simply rested her fingertips on the cover and closed her eyes for a fraction of a second.

Then she opened them.

"The patient suffers from severe bradykinesia, rigid muscle tone, and a complete collapse of the autonomic nervous system," Isabel recited, her voice flat and absolute. "But your doctors failed to record the micro-tremors in her left hand, specifically the index and thumb, occurring every four seconds. Shall I recite the rest of the indicators your expensive specialists missed, or is that enough?"

The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Eleanor's mouth dropped open. Preston froze mid-step. Only the primary care physicians and the family knew about the micro-tremors. It was entirely omitted from the printed reports to prevent leaks to the press.

Helene's eyes filled with sudden, desperate hope. She rushed forward, stopping inches from Isabel. "Can you... can you truly cure her?"

Isabel looked directly into Helene's tear-filled eyes. Her chin lifted.

"I can pull her back from the brink of death," Isabel declared, her tone dripping with absolute, unshakable arrogance.

Preston recovered from his shock. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, his thumb jabbing at the screen. "I am calling security. I am throwing this lunatic out onto the street."

Isabel stood her ground. She crossed her arms over her chest, staring Preston down.

"Call them," Isabel said coldly. "But the second I walk out that door, you sign your mother's death warrant."

Before Preston could respond, the heavy oak door behind them swung open with a slow, deliberate creak.

The arguing stopped instantly. The tension in the room shifted, sucked toward the doorway like air rushing into a vacuum.

Preston instinctively stepped back. Eleanor's hand tightened around her teacup, her knuckles going white.

A man stepped into the room. He moved with the slow, predatory ease of someone who had never been told to hurry in his life. Two armed guards flanked the doorway behind him, but they didn't enter. They didn't need to.

Axel Vanderbilt leaned his shoulder against the carved stone archway. He was tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in a perfectly fitted black suit with no tie. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, as if he had been running his hands through it. His eyes—cold, gray, and utterly unreadable—swept across the room and landed directly on Isabel.

He didn't look at his siblings. He didn't acknowledge the argument he had clearly overheard. He looked only at her.

"So," Axel said, his voice a low, quiet rumble that somehow carried more weight than Preston's shouting ever could. "You're the dark web specialist."

Isabel met his gaze without blinking. "And you must be the one they're all afraid of."

A ghost of something—amusement, perhaps, or curiosity—flickered across Axel's face and vanished.

"You walk into my house, insult my family's doctors, and claim you can cure a woman the world's best neurologists have abandoned," Axel said. He pushed off the archway and took a slow step toward her. "That takes nerve. Or stupidity."

"Or skill," Isabel replied.

Axel stopped three feet away from her. He was tall enough that she had to tilt her chin up to hold his gaze. She didn't seem to mind.

"Let's make a wager," Axel said. His voice dropped lower, meant only for her. "If you fail, I take your life. Not metaphorically. If you succeed—"

"You will call me Master," Isabel interrupted, her lips curving into a cold, confident smile. "Every single time you see me. In public. In private. In front of your entire empire."

Preston let out a choked sound of disbelief. Eleanor gasped.

Axel's eyes narrowed. For a long, tense moment, he simply stared at her. Then he tilted his head, studying her like she was a puzzle he intended to solve.

"Bold," he murmured. "But not bold enough." He stepped closer, close enough that the heat of him bled into her space. "If I win, I don't just take your life. I take everything. Your secrets. Your past. Why a girl with your skills spent two years in a federal prison. All of it becomes mine."

Isabel's smile didn't waver. "Fine. But when I win, you don't just call me Master. You kneel."

The silence in the room was absolute. Even the guards at the door held their breath.

Axel stared down at her for a long, stretched-out moment. Then, slowly, the corner of his mouth lifted.

"Deal," he said.

He turned his back on her and walked toward the grand staircase, pausing at the first step. He looked over his shoulder, his gray eyes glinting in the dim light of the chandelier.

"Take her to Matilda's room," he ordered no one in particular. "And if she turns out to be a fraud, dispose of her quietly. I don't want a mess."

Then he was gone, his footsteps echoing up the stairs, leaving Isabel standing in the center of the shattered, silent room with the faintest trace of a smile still on her lips.

She had walked into the lion's den.

She intended to own it.
