Chapter 1

POV: Ava

The words sliced through the air like a blade.

“Will you marry me?”

I had just stepped into the grand ballroom of the Hayes Tower, my heels clicking against the marble floor, a soft smile already forming on my lips. The room was alive with golden light from the chandeliers, crystal glasses clinking, and the low hum of excitement. I’d been running late—final touches on my gown, a quick touch-up to my makeup—because tonight was supposed to be perfect. The company’s anniversary gala. Seven years of building something extraordinary with Adrian. Our night.

I couldn’t see the stage clearly at first. The crowd of elegantly dressed guests stood shoulder to shoulder, their backs to me, applauding wildly. I assumed someone important was giving a speech. Maybe one of the board members. Maybe even Adrian, thanking everyone for their loyalty. I smoothed the front of my emerald-green gown, the one he’d said made my eyes look like starlight, and kept walking forward.

A Hayes employee near the entrance spotted me. “Miss Carter…” His voice faltered. The smile on his face froze, then slipped.

I tilted my head, still smiling. “Everything okay?”

He nodded too quickly and looked away. Another guest, a woman I vaguely recognized from past events, forced a brittle smile before turning sharply toward her companion. Whispers seemed to ripple outward from me like stones dropped in still water.

You’re imagining it, I told myself. It’s just the nerves of a big night.

The applause swelled, louder now, almost thunderous. I moved deeper into the crowd, nodding politely at familiar faces—executives, investors, friends of the company. But something felt off. The energy wasn’t quite right. People weren’t focused on the stage anymore. Some were glancing at me, then quickly away. Ryan’s assistant—usually warm and chatty—looked pale, her fingers twisting the stem of her champagne flute. Adrian’s best friend, Marcus, lowered his head when our eyes met, studying the floor like it held the secrets of the universe.

My stomach tightened. Had something gone wrong with the event? A technical issue? A business emergency? Adrian would have texted me. He always did.

I walked faster, the fabric of my gown brushing against my legs. The applause grew deafening. My heart beat in time with it, a strange mix of pride and anticipation. This was our.world. The one we’d built together. In a few weeks, I would stand beside him as his wife in front of these same people.

The crowd finally began to part as I neared the front. A path opened almost instinctively.

And then I saw the stage.

Time stopped.

Adrian Hayes, my Adrian—was on one knee in the center of the brightly lit platform. His tall, commanding frame was unmistakable in the tailored black tuxedo that fit him like it had been sculpted for him. His dark hair was perfectly styled, the sharp line of his jaw catching the light. In front of him stood Claire Donovan, beautiful in a shimmering silver gown, her hands pressed to her mouth as tears glistened on her cheeks.

He was holding a diamond ring. The stone caught the spotlight and threw sparks across the room.

My first reaction was pure denial. A cold, numb wave washed over me. This isn’t real. This is a joke. A skit. A surprise for someone else. My mind scrambled for any explanation other than the obvious.

Then his voice — deep, steady, the voice that had whispered “I love you” against my skin for seven years—rang out clearly over the microphone.

“Will you marry me, Claire?”

Claire’s answer came through happy tears. “Yes.”

The ballroom exploded.

Cheers. Applause so loud it vibrated in my chest. Flashes from cameras. The master of ceremonies stepped forward with a broad grin, congratulating the newly engaged couple. Adrian rose gracefully, slid the ring onto Claire’s finger, and then pulled her into a kiss.

The kiss.

His hand on her waist. Her fingers curling into his lapel. The way she melted against him.

There was no misunderstanding. No alternate reality, not a prank.

The man I loved had just proposed to another woman.

My legs felt rooted to the floor. Sound faded until all I could hear was the frantic pounding of my own heart. A roaring in my ears. The world narrowed to that single devastating image: Adrian and Claire, glowing under the lights, the perfect billionaire couple.

Someone nearby whispered, loud enough for me to catch, “Isn’t that Adrian’s fiancée?”

The whisper spread like fire through dry grass. Heads turned. Phones rose. The applause stuttered in patches as more and more people noticed me standing there, alone in my emerald gown, the color suddenly feeling garish and wrong.

I was the spectacle now. Public humiliation served live and in high definition.

My cheeks burned. My hands trembled at my sides. I wanted to disappear, to sink into the floor, but I couldn’t move. Sympathetic glances mixed with morbid curiosity. This was entertainment. The billionaire’s secret drama unfolding in real time.

Adrian finally looked out over the crowd.

Our eyes met.

For one fractured second, everything in his expression shattered—shock, panic, raw regret. He looked like a man who had just realized he’d set his entire world on fire. His mouth opened. He took half a step toward the edge of the stage, as if he might abandon everything and run to me.

Claire noticed the shift in him. Her head turned, following his gaze.

When her eyes landed on me, her smile faltered.

The ballroom fell into an agonizing hush. The cheers died away. Even the music seemed to stop.

I don’t know where the strength came from, but I started walking. Straight toward the stage. No one dared block my path. The crowd parted like the Red Sea. My heels echoed in the silence.

I climbed the short steps to the stage without stumbling. Adrian stood frozen, Claire’s hand still in his. I stopped directly in front of him, close enough to see the flecks of gold in his panicked eyes—the same eyes I had gazed into thousands of nights.

I spoke quietly, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried in the dead silence.

“Why?”

Adrian stepped forward, his voice breaking. “Ava…”

I shook my head sharply. “Don’t say my name.”

The words hung between us. Seven years of memories crashed through my mind—late nights in his office, lazy Sundays in our apartment, the way he’d pull me close and promise forever. All of it, ash.

I met his gaze again. “When did you stop loving me?”

His throat worked. He opened his mouth, but no words came. The silence stretched, heavy and damning. That silence was the answer.

Pain lanced through my chest, so sharp I thought I might collapse. But I didn’t. I reached for the engagement ring on my finger—the one he had given me two years ago with tears in his eyes and vows on his lips. I slid it off slowly. The metal felt cold now.

I took his hand—his free hand, the one not holding Claire’s—and placed the ring carefully into his palm. My fingers lingered for the briefest second, memorizing the warmth I would never feel again.

“Seven years,” I said, my voice steady even as my heart fractured into a thousand pieces. A painful pause stretched between us. “I hope she never loves you the way I loved you.”

I turned away.

The guests silently made room for me as I descended the stage. No one spoke. No one tried to stop me. The only sound was the faint click of my heels and the distant, muffled ringing in my ears.

I reached the grand doors.

Behind me, movement erupted. Adrian’s voice cut through the silence—raw, desperate. “Ava!”

I didn’t turn around. I pushed through the doors into the cool night air of the hallway, my vision blurring.

Footsteps thundered after me. He was coming. Ignoring the reporters surging forward, ignoring Claire calling his name, ignoring the entire gala crumbling behind him.

He was close. So close I could almost feel his hand reaching for me.

Then his phone rang.

I heard him slow. The ringtone was insistent. He answered instinctively.

All I caught was a woman’s terrified, crying voice on the other end.

“Adrian… please come quickly…”

His sharp intake of breath. The way his footsteps faltered completely.

I didn’t look back. I kept walking, faster now, disappearing down the corridor as the weight of everything I had just lost crashed over me.

For the second time that night, Adrian Hayes had to make a choice.

And once again, it wasn’t me.
