Chapter 1

I carried a thermal container of stew to my fiancé's private estate, worried he was stressed about our upcoming pack merger.

Instead of a meditation retreat, I walked into a nightmare.

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I saw Ivan playing on the rug with a secret son, while a woman named Kiera watched like a queen.

I froze as I heard Ivan's voice float through the glass.

"Aliana is just a placeholder. She smells like antiseptic and fear. Once I get the territory, I'll reject her."

My heart shattered, but the knife twisted deeper when he laughed about my parents.

"Her folks pay for this villa, Kiera. They know. They prefer a strong alliance over a disappointment of a daughter."

My own parents were drugging me to steal my medical patents. They thought I was weak. They thought I was just a submissive Healer.

I wiped my tears and unlocked his safe with the admin codes he forgot I installed.

I took the financial records, the fake DNA tests, and the theft agreements.

That night, at his secret son's birthday party, I didn't bring a gift.

I brought a projector.

I played their confession for the entire Council, severed the mate bond publicly, and vanished into the North.

Six months later, a ruined, homeless Ivan crawled into my clinic, begging for the legendary White Wolf to save him.

He looked up, shocked to see me standing there, glowing with silver power.

"You rejected the gift of the Goddess," I smiled, letting my Alpha aura crush him to the floor. "Now, get out."

Chapter 1

Aliana POV:

I smelled the betrayal before I even reached the door.

My hands were still trembling slightly, a lingering side effect of the twelve-hour surgery I had just performed. Being the head Healer of the Donovan Pack was not a title I held lightly. It required precision, patience, and a connection to the Moon Goddess's gift of restoration that few wolves possessed.

I adjusted the thermal container in my arms. Inside was a venison stew, slow-cooked with rosemary and juniper berries. It was Alpha Ivan's favorite. My fiancé. My mate.

Or so I thought.

I parked my modest sedan a block away from the secluded estate Ivan claimed was his "meditation retreat." He told me he needed space to handle the stress of the upcoming merger between his Hughes Pack and my father's Donovan Pack. He said the Alpha blood in his veins made him volatile, and he didn't want to accidentally hurt me with his aura.

I believed him. Like a fool, I believed him.

The security guard at the gate hesitated when he saw me.

"Miss Donovan," he stammered, his eyes darting toward the main house. "The Alpha gave strict orders..."

"I am his future Luna," I said, my voice quiet but laced with the authority I rarely used. "Do you really want to explain to him why you kept his mate standing in the cold?"

He paled and opened the gate.

As I walked up the winding driveway, the wind shifted. That was when it hit me.

Wolves have senses far sharper than humans. We live through our noses. A mate's scent is supposed to be the most comforting thing in the world, like coming home. Ivan's scent—fresh pine and rain—usually calmed my inner wolf.

But tonight, his scent was thick in the air, cloying and heavy. And it was mixed with something else.

Orchids and musk. Artificial. Sickeningly sweet.

My stomach churned. I knew that scent. Kiera Reese.

I stopped behind a large oak tree near the patio. The floor-to-ceiling windows were uncurtained, displaying the living room like a stage.

I saw him.

Ivan was on the rug, on all fours, laughing. He wasn't the stoic, terrifying Alpha CEO the world knew. He was playing. On his back rode a small boy, Leo, tugging at Ivan's ears.

And there, sitting on the plush leather sofa, sipping wine, was Kiera. She looked like a queen surveying her kingdom.

My inner wolf, usually a quiet, submissive presence, let out a low, confused whine. Mate? Why is Mate with her?

I crept closer, using the shadows. My hearing focused, filtering out the rustle of leaves and the distant traffic, locking onto the voices inside.

"You really should tell her, Ivan," Kiera purred. "Five years is a long time to keep a pet. Watching that bitch play house is getting old."

Ivan stood up, effortlessly lifting the boy onto his shoulders. "Patience, Kiera. The merger is next week. Once the papers are signed and the Donovan territory is legally mine, she becomes useless."

"But she's your Fated Mate," Kiera teased, though there was venom in her voice. "Doesn't it hurt to lie to her?"

Ivan scoffed. The sound was like a physical blow to my chest.

"Aliana is a placeholder," he said coldly. "She has the Donovan bloodline, but she's weak. She was raised by humans. She smells like antiseptic and fear. She isn't fit to be a Luna of the Hughes Empire. You are."

I felt the blood drain from my face. A placeholder.

"Besides," Ivan continued, walking over to kiss Kiera's forehead, "I never completed the Marking. The bond is there, but it's weak. I can reject her whenever I want."

I clamped a hand over my mouth to stifle a sob. The Marking. He always said he wanted to wait until our wedding night, out of respect. It wasn't respect. It was a loophole.

"And her parents?" Kiera asked. "They won't be happy if you dump their precious daughter."

Ivan laughed again. "Richard and Eleanor? Who do you think pays for this villa, Kiera? They know. They prefer a strong alliance with me over the happiness of a daughter they consider a disappointment. They think Aliana is 'too soft' to lead."

My knees gave out. I sank into the wet grass.

My parents. My own mother and father. They were paying for the house where my mate kept his mistress and their child.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I looked down through blurred vision. A text from Ivan.

Baby, I'm stuck at the border dealing with some Rogues. It's going to be a long night. Don't wait up. Love you.

I looked through the window. Ivan was pouring more wine for Kiera, smiling that charming smile that I thought belonged only to me.

My inner wolf didn't whine this time. She went silent. A deadly, cold silence that was far more terrifying than her grief.

I didn't storm in. I didn't scream. I left the thermal container of stew at the base of the oak tree.

Then, I turned around and walked away. The love in my heart was rapidly cooling, hardening into something sharp and jagged. Something that felt like revenge.
