Chapter 5

I pressed my thumb flat against Priya's phone screen. The blurry image of Skye's manicured hands digging into Eli's upper arm burned into my retinas. My son's mouth was stretched into a scream, his heels dragging against the asphalt.

"I have my keys," Priya said, already grabbing her leather purse from the floor. "I will drive you to the soccer field right now."

I wanted to run. My muscles coiled, urging me to sprint to the parking lot and tear that woman away from my child.

I shoved the phone back across the teak desk.

"No."

Priya froze, her hand hovering over her car keys. "Renata, she is hurting him."

"If I show up at that field, Marcus will call the police," I said, my voice dangerously hollow. "I left the house. I left the legal papers. I have no formal custody agreement yet. He will stand in front of the other parents and call me a hysterical, trespassing ex-wife."

"You are just going to let her grab him like that?"

"I am going to build a war chest," I said, standing up. "When I file for emergency custody, I will have the income and the stability to crush him in court. Where are the vendor files for the new clinic?"

Seven days after I signed the partnership agreement, I sat across from Eleanor Gallagher in a glass-walled conference room.

Eleanor tapped a manicured finger against the Nurture Care proposal folder. As the head of the largest private medical supply network in the state, her signature meant a thirty percent reduction in our overhead costs.

"Your projected order volume is ambitious, Mrs. Vance," Eleanor said. "But your competitor, the Serenity Group, guarantees a faster turnaround on postpartum recovery kits."

"Serenity Group uses synthetic mesh in their surgical underwear," I replied without missing a beat. "It causes severe skin irritation for women with c-section incisions."

Eleanor raised an eyebrow. "And your kits?"

"Pure organic cotton, sourced directly from your premium line. A mother recovering from major abdominal surgery does not care about a fast turnaround. She cares about not bleeding through cheap fabric."

I slid a sample of the Serenity product across the table, right next to Eleanor's premium cotton sample.

"Serenity treats mothers like a bulk order," I said. "We treat them like patients. If you partner with us, your premium line becomes the standard of care in three new cities by December."

Eleanor looked at the cheap synthetic fabric, then at me. She pulled a silver pen from her blazer pocket.

"I like how you operate," Eleanor said, signing the bottom line of the contract.

Priya waited until the elevator doors closed behind Eleanor before letting out a sharp laugh.

"You just secured our biggest supply chain account in twenty minutes," Priya said, grabbing the signed contract. "My operations director spent three months trying to get her on the phone."

"Mothers know what mothers need," I said, gathering my folders.

We walked back to my corner office. The space was sparse, holding only a desk, a laptop, and a framed photo of Eli from his tenth birthday.

Priya shut the office door behind us. Her smile faded.

"I played tennis with Sarah from your old neighborhood this morning," Priya said, lowering her voice. "She had a lot to say about the Vance household."

I stopped organizing my papers. "Tell me."

"Marcus is working late every night. He leaves Eli with Skye." Priya leaned against the doorframe. "Skye complained loudly at the country club salon yesterday. She called Eli a brat who ruins her evenings."

My fingernails dug into the edge of the desk.

"Sarah said she saw Eli walking to the bus stop yesterday," Priya continued. "His uniform shirt was wrinkled. He was eating a bag of vending machine chips for breakfast."

A cold fury settled in my chest. Twelve years of perfectly packed organic lunches. Twelve years of ironed collars. Marcus had handed my son over to a woman who couldn't even be bothered to pour a bowl of cereal.

"I can call child services," Priya offered.

"A bag of chips isn't enough for a state intervention," I said, opening my laptop. "They will do a home visit, Marcus will lie, and Skye will hide the junk food. I need a documented paper trail from a neutral third party."

I opened a blank email draft. I routed it through an encrypted server Priya's IT department had set up for me.

I typed the address for Mr. Harrison, Eli's homeroom teacher.

"What are you doing?" Priya asked, walking over to look at my screen.

"Creating the trail."

I kept the message brief and clinical.

Please monitor Eli Vance. He may be experiencing neglect regarding his daily nutrition and hygiene at home. Document any changes in his behavior or appearance.

I hit send. The screen flashed, confirming the anonymous delivery.

"The school is legally required to log any suspected neglect," I said, closing the laptop. "When the custody hearing comes, I will subpoena the teacher's records."

"You are terrifying," Priya said, though her tone held deep respect.

"I am a mother."

Priya's phone chimed in her hand. She glanced at the screen, and her posture went rigid.

"What is it now?" I asked.

Priya looked up, her eyes wide. "My contact at the downtown financial district just texted me. It's about Marcus."

"Did he close another deal?"

"No." Priya stepped closer to my desk. "His firm just locked him out of the building. He has been suspended pending a federal investigation."

I stood up. "Suspended? For what?"

"Embezzlement," Priya said, reading directly from the text. "They are auditing his expense accounts. All those business trips he took over the last year? He was using client funds to pay for the luxury resorts."

The Napa Valley receipt flashed in my mind. The couple's massage. The expensive wine. He hadn't just cheated on me. He had stolen from his own clients to impress his mistress.

"He is going to lose everything," I said, the reality of his ruin settling over the room.

At that exact second, my cell phone vibrated violently against the wooden desk.

The sudden noise made us both jump.

I looked down at the glowing screen.

It was an unknown landline number.

Beneath the digits, the location ID displayed three words in bright white text: City Children's Hospital.
