Chapter 6

I stared at the glowing screen. The harsh white text—City Children's Hospital—illuminated the dark grain of my desk.

My thumb hovered over the green accept button. The digital clock in the corner of my laptop read 11:47 AM.

I pressed the glass and lifted the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" I said.

"Is this the mother of Eli Vance?" a woman asked. The background noise crackled with the sharp beeps of medical monitors and hurried voices.

"Yes, I am Renata Vance."

"Mrs. Vance, this is Nurse Collins from the pediatric emergency department." Her words clipped together, fast and urgent. "Your son was brought in by ambulance ten minutes ago."

My hand gripped the phone. The plastic casing groaned under the pressure. Three months ago, my name had been crossed out on his school emergency contact form.

"Why did you call me?" I asked, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "My name isn't the primary contact anymore."

"We tried the primary number listed in the school's digital file," Nurse Collins said quickly. "It went straight to a disconnected line. When we pulled the physical backup form, the primary name was crossed out in pen. But your name was written back in."

"Written back in?"

"In pencil. Very faint, right below the scratched-out section." Nurse Collins paused, a heavy sigh cutting through the static. "Mrs. Vance, you need to get here now. Eli had a febrile seizure."

Febrile seizure.

The words slammed into my chest. Twelve years of monitoring his temperature, of sitting up until dawn with a cool washcloth, of knowing exactly when a slight fever tipped into danger. I had never missed a spike. I had never let it get this far.

"He is in the ER?" I asked.

"Trauma Bay Three," she confirmed. "He is post-ictal, still unresponsive. We are running blood panels now."

I didn't wait for her to finish. I grabbed my car keys from the desk.

"I am on my way," I said.

"He needs his mother here," the nurse added softly before the line clicked dead.

I shoved the phone into my pocket. I didn't look at Priya. I didn't look at the financial reports scattered across my desk. I sprinted down the hallway, pushed through the heavy glass doors of the Nurture Care lobby, and hit the pavement running.

The drive to the hospital took fourteen minutes. I didn't stop for yellow lights. I didn't check my rearview mirror.

I parked the sedan half on the curb near the emergency entrance. The automatic doors slid open, hitting me with the sharp scent of antiseptic and floor wax.

I ran past the triage desk. "Trauma Bay Three," I told the security guard, holding up my ID. He took one look at my face and pointed down the left corridor.

I rounded the corner. The hallway stretched long and bright, lined with glass-walled rooms and chaotic medical carts.

Fifty feet away, a man sat slumped in a blue vinyl waiting chair outside Bay Three.

It was Marcus.

He wore a wrinkled dress shirt, the top three buttons undone. His tie was gone. His expensive suit jacket lay crumpled on the floor next to his feet. He stared blankly at his hands, resting on his knees.

There was no sign of Skye. No manicured hands. No designer purse sitting on the empty chair beside him.

I walked toward him. My heels hit the linoleum floor with hard, sharp thuds.

Marcus jerked his head up at the sound. His eyes were bloodshot, the skin under them bruised purple from exhaustion.

He stood up slowly. He looked at me, his mouth opening and closing before any sound came out.

"Renata," he whispered, his voice trembling.

"Where is my son?" I demanded, stopping two feet away from him.

"They won't let me in," Marcus said, pointing a shaking finger at the closed glass door of Bay Three. "They said he seized for three minutes. He wouldn't wake up."

"Why wasn't anyone watching his fever?" I asked. "Where is the woman you left him with?"

Marcus swallowed hard. He looked down at the floor, then back up at me.

"Skye left," he said. "She packed her bags last week. I... I didn't know who else to call."
