Chapter 2

"Did you really think you could hide from me? Pure grandstanding. Expect a lawsuit."

I read the comment aloud, my voice flat against the thin walls of the rental room. The avatar of Marcus smiling at that charity gala mocked me from the top of the comment section.

I did not flinch. I pressed the shortcut keys on my keyboard. The screen flashed white, capturing the threat.

"Saved," I muttered, dragging the image file into a master folder on my desktop.

He wanted to play the legal card. He wanted to intimidate me into taking the podcast down. A week ago, the mere mention of his attorneys would have sent me into a panic.

Not anymore.

I minimized the browser and opened an encrypted drive. A folder labeled 'Miller' sat right in the center. I double-clicked it.

A grid of PDF documents populated the screen. Twenty-six individual bank transfer receipts.

I clicked the first one.

Date: October 14th, four years ago. Amount: $3,000.

I opened the next.

Date: November 14th. Amount: $3,000.

I clicked a small audio file sitting at the bottom of the folder. It was an old saved voicemail. I hit the spacebar to play it.

"Vivian, please," Diane's voice crackled through the studio monitors, thick with tears and desperation. "They gave me the eviction notice this morning. I have nowhere else to go. Nobody will hire me."

I picked up my phone and scrolled back to the exact date of that voicemail, finding my own text response. I read my old words to the empty room.

"I am here for you, Di. I just wired three thousand dollars. Pay the rent, buy some groceries. We will figure the rest out together."

Twenty-six months. Twenty-six transfers.

Seventy-eight thousand dollars in total.

I kept her off the streets during the hardest two years of her life. I paid for her clothes, her food, her internet bill. I even bought the tailored silk blouse she wore the night she sat at the head of my dining table.

Now, she slept in my custom king-sized bed. She kissed my husband. She criticized my wardrobe.

"Let us see how the public likes your origin story, Diane," I whispered.

I dragged the entire batch of PDFs into the video timeline for Episode Two. The editing software processed the files, snapping them into place along the audio track.

Next, I opened a folder of screenshots. I pulled Diane's old text messages onto the screen, layering them over the bank receipts.

You saved my life, Vivian.

I owe you everything.

I will never forget this.

I aligned the images perfectly with the audio beats. The evidence formed an undeniable staircase of betrayal.

A sharp chime echoed from my laptop.

A secure messaging app popped open in the corner of my secondary monitor. My co-producer, Grace Lowell, was online.

"You seeing these numbers?" Grace typed. "We hit three thousand concurrent listeners. The true-crime forums just picked up the link."

"I see them," I typed back. "They are tuning in."

"My contact at the Bureau just flagged something," Grace wrote, the text bubble appearing a second later. "Someone at the FBI started listening privately. They pinged the IP address of the hosting site."

I stopped adjusting the audio levels. I stared at the blinking cursor.

"The FBI?" I typed.

"Marcus reported you missing across state lines and drained your joint accounts," Grace replied. "He probably framed it as an extortion case. Or kidnapping. If they trace the upload location, they will find your rental."

I leaned closer to the monitor.

"Are you sure you want to keep dropping these episodes?" Grace asked.

I looked at the timeline. The twenty-six bank receipts glowed brightly against the dark interface of the editing software. I spent sixteen years being quiet. I spent sixteen years building a man who tore me down, and supporting a friend who took my place.

I placed my hands on the keyboard.

"Drop," I typed.

I closed the chat window and moved the mouse to the top right corner of the software. I clicked Export.

The progress bar appeared, a thin gray line that slowly filled with bright green.

Ten percent.

I adjusted the pop filter on my microphone, making sure it was perfectly aligned for the next recording session.

Forty percent.

I gathered the empty coffee cups scattered across my desk and tossed them into the plastic trash bin by the door.

Eighty percent.

My chest tightened. The reality of what I was doing settled over me. This was not just a domestic dispute anymore. This was war, broadcasted to thousands of strangers, and now, federal agents.

"Upload complete," the automated voice announced.

The second episode was live.

I leaned back in my chair, waiting for the listener count to spike again. I expected another angry comment from Marcus. I expected Diane to try and call my burner phone.

Instead, the secure messaging app chimed again.

Grace's name flashed on the screen.

"Wait," Grace wrote. "Turn on the news. Marcus is doing a live press conference."

I minimized the podcast dashboard and typed the local news station's URL into the browser. The live feed buffered for a second before a crisp, high-definition video filled the screen.

Marcus stood at a podium on the steps of his downtown firm.

He wore his navy bespoke suit, the one I picked out for our anniversary. A dozen microphones from various local and national news outlets were shoved in his face. Diane stood slightly behind him, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue.

"My wife is deeply unwell," Marcus told the crowd of reporters, his voice thick with practiced sorrow. "We have tried to get her psychiatric help for years. Her recent public statements are the result of a severe mental breakdown."

"Liar," I hissed at the monitor.

"Mr. Shaw!" a reporter shouted from the front row. "Your wife claims you emptied your joint accounts and forced her out. She says she fled for her safety. How do you respond?"

Marcus leaned closer to the cluster of microphones. He did not look angry. He looked painfully sympathetic.

"I respond with the truth," Marcus said smoothly. "Vivian did not flee in fear. She left because she wanted to."

He reached inside his suit jacket.

Another message from Grace popped onto my screen.

"Look at what he is holding," she typed. "He just told the reporters he has a document signed by your own hand, proving you planned to abandon this family long ago."
