Chapter 3

"Pause the feed," I ordered, leaning closer to the monitor.

"I cannot pause a live broadcast, Vivian," Grace's voice crackled through the laptop speakers. "He is on every major network."

"Then grab a screen capture," I shot back. "Zoom in on his left hand. Now."

Keys clattered over the audio connection. Grace worked fast.

"Done," Grace said. "I sent the high-resolution image to your secure folder."

I minimized the streaming window and opened the file. Marcus stood at the wooden podium, his expression a mask of manufactured grief. His thumb pressed down hard on a folded sheet of white paper, holding it up for the flashing cameras. The text was slightly blurry, but the embossed letterhead cut through the pixelation.

A cold laugh escaped my throat.

"What is it?" Grace asked.

"He kept it," I said, tracing the edge of the document on my screen. "Sixteen years, and he kept the original copy."

"Copy of what?"

"The family agreement. The contract I signed when I gave up my career to raise Ethan." I pointed at the monitor, even though Grace could not see me. "Look at the bottom edge. He folded the lower half back. He is only showing the press the first paragraph."

"The clause where you surrender your professional equity," Grace deduced, her voice dropping.

"Exactly. He is using my sacrifice as a weapon. He is telling the world I planned to leave empty-handed."

"He just told Channel Four you premeditated the abandonment," Grace added. "He claims the signature proves you wanted out of the marriage."

My jaw tightened. I remembered the day I signed that paper. We sat in his lawyer's office. He held my hand. He told me I was the foundation of his success. Now, he twisted my loyalty into a confession of guilt.

"He thinks I do not have the full version," I said.

"Do you?"

"I scanned every document in that house before I walked out." I opened my encrypted master drive. "I have the unredacted contract. The second paragraph clearly states I retain fifty percent of all future earnings in exchange for my domestic labor."

"That ruins his entire narrative," Grace noted.

"We are going to ruin more than that. Pull up the server logs from the house."

"Which date?"

"The night I disappeared. Look at the timestamp for the garage camera."

Silence stretched over the line as Grace navigated the remote server. I listened to the faint hum of my laptop fan.

"I have the log," Grace finally said. "Power failure at 23:47."

"Not a failure," I corrected her, pulling up my own copy of the data. "A manual disconnect. Someone pulled the physical wire from the router box."

"To hide what?"

"To hide me walking out the door."

I leaned back in the cheap office chair. The memory played in my mind, sharp and vivid. I placed my phone and my leather wallet on the hallway table. I arranged them perfectly, two pristine props left behind to tell a false story. I walked out the back door with a single suitcase and a fake ID, stepping into the dark. I needed Marcus to think I ran away in a panic. I needed him to feel secure. A secure man gets sloppy. Two years of silence gave me the time to track his offshore accounts without him watching my every move.

"The garage camera was the only lens that pointed at the street," I explained to Grace. "It would have shown me getting into a cab. It would have shown the license plate. It would have proven I left on my own."

"Instead, he cut the feed," Grace said. "He made it look like you vanished into thin air."

"He staged the house," I told her. "He cut the camera so no one could prove I left voluntarily. He wanted the police to think I was abducted, or worse. It gave him full control over my assets."

"If he cut the camera at 23:47," Grace said, "then he knew you were leaving. He let you go."

"He encouraged it. But he did not realize I kept the receipts."

I dragged the 23:47 server log onto the editing timeline for Episode Three. Next, I pulled the high-resolution scan of the complete family contract and placed it right beside the log.

"I am putting the full document on the podcast site," I said. "Side-by-side with the power outage record."

"You are calling his bluff in real-time," Grace said. "The media will tear him apart when they see the unedited contract."

"That is the point. He wants to play the victim on national television. Let us give the audience the rest of the script."

I highlighted the audio track and adjusted the volume levels. My pulse hammered a steady rhythm against my ribs. For two years, I swallowed my anger. For two years, I let the world call me a monster.

"Exporting the file now," I announced.

The progress bar appeared on my screen, filling with bright green.

"The press conference is still going," Grace warned. "He is taking questions from the crowd."

"Let him talk. The more lies he tells, the harder he falls."

"Vivian, wait," Grace said, her tone shifting sharply. The casual professionalism vanished, replaced by a tight, urgent clip. "A reporter just cornered him. I am sending you a raw feed from a local station. Open your inbox."

I clicked away from the editing software. A new message from Grace sat at the top of my queue. I opened the video file.

A journalist shoved a microphone past Marcus's shoulder. "Mr. Shaw, why is the bottom of that page folded over? What are you hiding from the public?"

Marcus opened his mouth to answer, his practiced sympathetic smile faltering for a fraction of a second. The camera operator jostled the lens, trying to get a better angle on the document. The frame swung wide, moving past Marcus's tailored suit and capturing the driveway behind the podium.

My son stood by a municipal garbage truck.

He hoisted a heavy cardboard box over the lip of the compactor. Written across the side of the cardboard in thick black marker was my name.

Ethan tossed the box into the crushing metal jaws.
