Chapter 1

Two years ago I left my phone and wallet on the hallway table and walked out of my own life.

My husband cried on the morning news while his "dear friend" Diane held his hand on camera.

She stopped loving us, he told three hundred reporters.

My son stood beside him and nodded, said Aunt Diane was the one who stayed.

The police gave it forty-eight hours and stamped my file: left voluntarily.

Diane slept in my bed three months later.

What none of them knew was that I'd spent twelve years building a media company nobody could trace back to a housewife with no income.

So I built a podcast and masked my voice and called it Where Did the Perfect Wife Go.

Episode one: the bank records showing Marcus drained two hundred ten thousand dollars a week before I vanished.

Episode four: the ninety-five thousand that became Diane's condo.

Episode six: the garage camera, manually killed at 11:47 the night I disappeared.

Three hundred million plays.

The FBI reopened my case.

His sponsors ran. My son's university pulled his admission.

Then Marcus held a press conference and screamed at the microphone to show my face.

So I did.

Episode nine, the voice filter comes off.

By popular demand from the family, I said, here I am.

Hi everyone.

I'm the perfect wife.

****

"Where did the perfect wife go?" I asked the microphone, keeping my voice steady.

The audio waveform spiked on my laptop screen, a jagged green mountain range tracking the pitch of my words. I stood at the recording desk in a cramped out-of-town rental, miles away from the sprawling suburban estate I used to call home. The walls here were thin, the paint peeling, but the space was mine.

"Did she run away?" I continued, leaning closer to the pop filter. "Did she abandon her devoted husband and her loving son? The media says she packed a bag in the middle of the night and vanished. They call her a monster. A coward."

I paused, letting the silence hang in the recording.

"But what if she was erased? Dollar by dollar, insult by insult, until nothing remained but a shadow?"

I hit the spacebar. The recording stopped.

Grabbing my phone from the edge of the laptop, I opened the banking app. I needed to check the joint account one last time. Just to be absolutely sure.

Face ID unlocked the screen. The dashboard loaded.

Available Balance: $0.00.

"You greedy bastard," I whispered to the empty room.

I tapped the account details, scrolling down to the transaction history. Three massive withdrawals stared back at me, all processed within the last seven days.

Transfer one: $75,000.

Transfer two: $40,000.

Transfer three: $95,000.

Two hundred and ten thousand dollars total. The entire safety net I had insisted we build. Gone.

I tapped on the final transfer, bringing up the routing details. The payee name loaded in bold black letters.

Diane Miller.

I did not cry. My tear ducts gave out two years and one week ago.

"I wired the money to the university," I had told Marcus across our mahogany dining table that night. "Forty-eight thousand dollars. That covers Ethan's entire first year."

Marcus didn't lift his eyes from his phone. He kept typing an email. "Viv, don't wear that sweater when Diane gets here. It looks tacky."

I stared at him. The bank receipt trembled in my hand. "I just told you I emptied the last of my personal savings for our son's education. And you're talking about my clothes?"

"Dad's right," Ethan chimed in, stabbing a piece of chicken with his fork. "You look like a maid, Mom. Diane always dresses nice."

"Diane is your father's assistant," I said, my voice rising. "She is a guest in this house."

"She's a partner," Marcus corrected sharply, finally looking up. He glared at me. "She brings in clients. You stay home. We have an agreement."

"An agreement?" I scoffed. "You held my hand the day I signed the family contract. You told me to give up my career."

"Because you wanted to raise Ethan!" Marcus shouted back.

"You said, 'You take care of the home, I'll take care of the outside'," I reminded him, quoting his exact words. "I gave you a hundred and eighty thousand dollars of my dowry to start your firm. I gave you half my professional contact book."

"That was sixteen years ago," Marcus sneered. "What have you done lately? You don't bring in a dime."

The doorbell rang before I could answer.

Ethan sprinted to the foyer. "Aunt Diane is here!"

She walked into the dining room a minute later, wearing a tailored silk blouse and a smirk. She bypassed the empty guest chairs entirely. Instead, she slid right into the seat at the head of the table.

The seat of honor in my sixteen-year marriage.

"Hope I'm not interrupting," Diane said, though her tone suggested she didn't care either way.

"Not at all," Marcus said, his voice instantly softening. "Vivian was just complaining about money again."

"Oh, Viv," Diane sighed, picking up a wine glass. She swirled the red liquid. "You really shouldn't stress Marcus out. He carries the whole financial burden of this family. You have no idea how hard it is out there in the real world."

"This is my house," I said, my voice dangerously low. "You are drinking my wine."

"Wine paid for by Marcus's credit card," Diane shot back, her smirk widening. "Sit down, Vivian. You're making a scene."

Marcus reached over and squeezed Diane's shoulder. "Ignore her. Let's talk about the new account."

I stood frozen. A woman with zero income on paper. A ghost haunting her own kitchen.

The memory faded, leaving me alone in the dim light of the rental. The world currently thought I was a monster. The missing wife who walked out on a perfect family. The news anchors called me selfish. The internet called me a runaway coward.

They didn't know the truth. But they were about to.

I walked away from the recording desk and moved toward the narrow hallway. A cheap, wobbly table stood by the front door. A single framed photograph rested on top of it.

I picked up the frame.

It was a picture of me from sixteen years ago. I wore a sharp blazer, my hair pulled back, a massive smile on my face as I held up my first major commission check. I looked alive. I looked powerful.

"You let him ruin you," I said to the glass.

I placed the photograph face down on the scratched wood. The past was dead.

I walked back to the desk and put the heavy headphones over my ears.

I highlighted the audio track I just finished editing. I clicked Export.

The progress bar filled the screen, turning from gray to bright green.

"Upload complete," the automated voice from the software announced.

I navigated to the podcast hosting site. The interface demanded a title for the first episode.

My fingers flew across the keyboard.

Where Did the Perfect Wife Go?

I stared at the blue Publish button. My finger hovered over the mouse. Sixteen years of silence weighed heavily on my chest. Sixteen years of cooking, cleaning, funding his dreams, and swallowing his insults.

I clicked the mouse.

The page refreshed. The episode was live.

A rush of adrenaline hit my veins. Control. Real, tangible control. For the first time in over a decade, I owned my narrative.

I clicked over to the creator dashboard. The real-time analytics page loaded.

Current listeners: 0.

I tapped my thumb against the edge of the desk.

The number flickered.

Current listeners: 14.

I leaned forward in my chair.

Current listeners: 89.

The digits spun like a slot machine.

Current listeners: 412.

They were tuning in. The true crime junkies, the gossiping neighbors, the news outlets. Everyone who thought they knew the story of Vivian Shaw.

A chime echoed through my headphones.

A notification popped up in the corner of the screen.

New Comment on Episode 1.

I moved the cursor and clicked the notification. The comment section expanded across the monitor.

The first message sat pinned at the top of the feed, posted just seconds ago.

I stared at the screen, my pulse hammering against my ribs.

The user's avatar was a high-resolution photo of Marcus smiling at a gala.

The comment read: "Did you really think you could hide from me?"
