Chapter 3

I spent the night tangled in sheets and anxiety, counting the hours until my world changed—again. The contract sat on my kitchen table, its weight more than paper and ink. Dominic’s offer was precise: one year, no emotional involvement, separate bedrooms, and enough money to keep Marian alive. The price was my freedom, maybe my soul. By dawn, the answer had crystallized in my chest, hard and cold as a diamond. I signed.

The lawyer’s office was glass and chrome, sterile as an operating room. Dominic was there, every inch the mafia king: tailored suit, storm-colored eyes, expression unreadable. He watched me sign, his gaze sharp as a scalpel. "You understand the terms?" he asked, voice low, almost indifferent.

I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. "Yes. I understand."

He slid the contract into his briefcase. "Welcome to the family, Elena."

The drive to the Moretti mansion felt unreal—like I’d been plucked from my life and dropped into someone else’s dream. The house loomed behind iron gates, three stories of pale stone and glass, manicured lawns stretching out beneath a bruised sky. Guards flanked the doors, their faces blank, nodding as I passed. Inside, the air was cool, scented faintly with roses and expensive polish. Every surface gleamed. Staff moved quietly through the halls, eyes flicking to me with a mixture of curiosity and caution.

A housekeeper guided me to my room—"Miss Rodriguez, this way"—her tone careful, as if I might shatter. The room was larger than my entire apartment, the bed piled high with silk pillows. I pressed my palm to the window, watching Los Angeles sprawl below, lights flickering in the dusk. I belonged nowhere and everywhere, a guest and a prisoner.

Bella burst in before I could unpack, arms wide, face lit by pure joy. "You’re really here!"

She flung herself at me, clinging tight. "Can you read me a story tonight? And help me with my piano? And pick my dress for school?" Her voice tumbled over itself, each request a lifeline thrown across the gulf between us.

"Of course," I said, surprised by the tenderness in my own voice.

The days blurred together, a parade of small rituals: breakfast at the sunlit table, Bella’s hand in mine as we crossed the garden, her laughter echoing through the halls. She demanded bedtime stories—always one more, always with me beside her, her curls spilling across my lap. She dragged me to her closet, insisting I help choose her outfit, her questions endless: "Does pink make me look brave? Does Papa like blue?" I tied her shoelaces, brushed her hair, sang lullabies I barely remembered. Each moment chipped away at the walls I’d built, exposing soft places I’d sworn to hide.

Dominic watched from a distance, usually in his study, the door cracked just enough for his eyes to catch the scene: Bella sprawled across my lap, giggling, my fingers gentle in her hair. Sometimes he lingered in the hallway, gaze lingering too long, jaw tight. I caught his reflection once in the glass cabinet, mouth set in a line, longing flickering in his eyes before he masked it with indifference. He rarely spoke, but his presence filled the mansion like thunder before rain.

I tried to keep my distance—to remember the contract, the boundaries, the warnings. But Bella made it impossible. She clung to me, her small hands warm and insistent, her trust both balm and poison. Each time she called me "Elena," each smile, each sleepy hug, I felt my resolve weaken.

One evening, after Bella had drifted to sleep, I sat in the living room, phone pressed to my ear, voice hushed. Marian’s doctor was blunt: "Her condition is worsening, Elena. We need another round of treatment. It’s expensive."

I thanked him, hung up, and let the tears fall—silent, quick, unstoppable. The weight of the mansion’s luxury felt obscene; Marian’s tiny, faded apartment lingered in my memory, the smell of chamomile tea and threadbare blankets. I curled into myself on the velvet couch, trying to disappear.

A shadow crossed the threshold. Dominic. He carried a bottle of wine, two glasses cradled in one hand. His posture was different tonight—less king, more man. He didn’t speak at first, just poured a glass and set it beside me, his fingers lingering on the rim.

"You’re worried about her," he said quietly.

I nodded, unable to look at him. "I can’t lose her. She’s all I have."

He sat beside me, close but not touching. The silence pressed in, heavy but not cruel. Dominic swirled his wine, staring into it as if searching for answers. "Three years ago, I almost died," he said. "A rival put a bullet in me. I was bleeding out in an alley. All I could hear was a baby crying. That cry kept me awake—kept me fighting until my men found us both."

His voice was rough, the words scraping out like stones. "I took her home. Bella. She saved my life. I thought I was saving her, but she saved me."

I reached out, almost without thinking, my hand brushing his cheek. His skin was warm, stubbled, the mask slipping just enough for pain and gratitude to surface. For a moment, he leaned into my touch, eyes closing. Vulnerability flickered in the lines of his mouth.

Dominic opened his eyes, searching my face. "People like us—we don’t get to have families. Not really."

I swallowed, feeling the truth settle between us. The contract, the distance, the rules—they all felt suddenly fragile. "Maybe we do," I whispered, though I wasn’t sure if I believed it.

His gaze lingered, something dark and hopeful moving beneath it. The wine remained untouched, the room wrapped in a hush that felt like the breath before a storm.

And as I pulled my hand away, a sliver of dread cut through the warmth—a sense that whatever was growing between us had made me visible, vulnerable, and marked. Somewhere in the mansion, footsteps echoed, slow and purposeful, promising that nothing in the Moretti world stayed safe for long.
