Chapter 3

The Frostline Pass did not welcome runaways.

It rose like the spine of a dead god between Silvermoon and Blackfang territory, jagged stone cliffs crowned with glacial fog that never melted, no matter the season. Every exiled wolf who crossed it carried a story, and most of those stories ended in bones.

I reached the border just as the Moon began to wane, her silver halo thinning like a frayed promise.

The Silvermoon wards flared weakly behind me, sluggish and indifferent. Once, they would have recognized my presence, bending gently aside for their Luna.

Now, I was nothing but a trespasser to my own land.

I hesitated only once.

Not because of Kael. Not because of Lyra.

Because of Papa.

The spirit flame pulsed faintly inside the soul-vessel bound to my chest, barely brighter than a dying ember. Every step I took away from Silvermoon tugged at it like gravity pulling a falling star into oblivion.

“Hold on,” I whispered. “Just a little longer.”

I stepped through the Frostline threshold.

The air shifted instantly. Blackfang magic did not caress like Silvermoon’s—it weighed, pressing down on my shoulders with territorial authority, testing the strength of my bones, the sincerity of my intent.

I was halfway across the first ridge when the howls began.

Not threat-howl.

Challenge.

Three figures broke from the mist ahead—wolves in their half-shifted forms, eyes glowing in the murk of dawn, fangs bared in silent appraisal. Blackfang border sentinels.

I raised my hands slowly. “I come under contract summons.”

One of them, taller than the others with ash-gray fur rippling beneath her skin, tilted her head. “Name.”

“Elira of Silvermoon.”

A flicker of recognition passed between them, but it was not respect.

“Former Luna,” another corrected flatly.

The truth struck harder than claws.

I swallowed. “Nicero Blackfang called me.”

The sentinels circled.

“He doesn’t summon broken wolves,” the ash-gray female said. “He claims them.”

Her gaze dropped to my shoulder where the mate-mark scar still burned faintly beneath my cloak.

“So tell me, Silvermoon castaway,” she said. “What did you trade to cross our border alive?”

“My future,” I replied without hesitation.

The sentinels stilled.

After a long moment, she nodded once. “Follow.”

They did not escort me like a guest.

They herded me like a weapon.

---

Blackfang territory was nothing like Silvermoon.

Where my former pack had built spires of white stone and ritual gardens under permanent moonlight, Blackfang rose from volcanic rock and ancient forest, its citadel carved directly into the mountain’s heart. No crystal towers. No decorative shrines.

Only iron gates, obsidian walls, and magic thick enough to taste.

They led me through tunnels lit with ember-veins that pulsed faintly like a living beast beneath the stone. My wolf paced restlessly inside me, bristling at every territorial marker we passed.

This land did not welcome submission.

It demanded survival.

At the citadel’s core, the sentinels halted before a set of double doors forged from blackened steel and bone.

“Wait here,” the ash-gray female said.

I did not have the energy to argue.

Minutes stretched into an hour. The soul-vessel at my chest grew colder, Papa’s flame flickering erratically.

Panic clawed its way into my lungs.

I pressed both hands over the crystal. “I’m here,” I whispered. “Don’t leave me now.”

The doors opened.

Nicero Blackfang stood in the threshold, sleeves rolled up, dark hair tied back with a leather cord. His presence filled the corridor before he even spoke—predatory, unyielding, impossible to ignore.

“You’re late,” he said.

I lifted my chin. “I came as fast as I could.”

His gaze drifted to the soul-vessel, narrowing. “Your father is already slipping.”

My chest tightened. “You said—”

“I said I would help,” he interrupted. “Not that I would reverse decay. Bring him.”

He turned without waiting, striding back into the chamber beyond. I followed, legs numb, heart pounding so loudly I feared he could hear it.

The altar chamber was not beautiful.

It was terrifying.

A massive black root—petrified, twisted, glowing faintly silver from within—rose from the stone floor, its branches embedded into the walls like veins. Ancient runes crawled across its surface, not carved but grown, pulsing in slow rhythm with the Moon far above.

The Moon-root.

The last remnant of the First Howl.

“This will not feel gentle,” Nicero said, stepping toward it. “And once we begin, you cannot pull back.”

“I don’t care about pain,” I said.

He turned sharply. “You should. Because this will not be your pain alone.”

He extended his hand. I hesitated only a moment before placing the soul-vessel into his palm.

His eyes closed.

The chamber trembled.

The Moon-root pulsed violently as Nicero drew the vessel toward it, his magic flaring like a storm beneath his skin. I felt Papa’s presence tugged from my chest, stretched thin between worlds.

“No,” I gasped. “You’re pulling him apart—”

“He’s not anchored,” Nicero said tightly. “Your mate-bond collapse destabilized the line. If we don’t bind him now, he won’t survive the night.”

“What do you need from me?” I cried.

His eyes snapped open. “Your blood.”

I didn’t ask where.

I slashed my palm across the obsidian edge of the altar before he could move, crimson spilling onto the stone. The Moon-root reacted instantly—its veins lighting up, tendrils unfurling toward me like hungry serpents.

Nicero caught my wrist, pressing my bleeding palm against the root.

Pain lanced up my arm.

It wasn’t physical. It was ancestral.

Memories not mine flooded my senses—wolves running beneath a crimson sky, blood-oaths sworn over fallen kings, children branded with destiny before they could walk.

I screamed as the root wrapped around my arm, silver light threading into my veins.

Papa’s soul-vessel glowed brighter.

Then steadied.

I collapsed to my knees, gasping, my head spinning violently.

Nicero released my wrist, his expression unreadable as he examined the vessel. “He’s stable,” he said. “For now.”

Relief shattered me.

I pressed my forehead to the floor, my body trembling with exhaustion and gratitude. “Thank you.”

Silence answered me.

I looked up.

Nicero was watching me with an intensity that made my skin prickle.

“You understand what you’ve done,” he said slowly. “Your bloodline is now marked by Blackfang magic. Silvermoon cannot reclaim you even if Kael begged.”

“I don’t belong to them anymore,” I replied.

“No,” he agreed softly. “You belong to the contract now.”

My heart stuttered. “We haven’t—”

“—completed it,” he finished. “But the Moon-root has already recognized your intent. From this moment on, every pack will sense you as mine.”

A chill slid down my spine. “That wasn’t part of the deal.”

He crouched before me, eyes level with mine. “It was always part of it. You simply chose not to hear it.”

For a moment, fear threatened to rise.

Then I remembered the cold silence of the ritual chamber. Kael’s eyes. Lyra’s smile.

I straightened. “Then let them sense it. I’m done begging for permission to survive.”

Something dark and approving flickered across Nicero’s face.

“Good,” he murmured. “Because Blackfang does not shelter victims.”

He rose and turned away. “Rest. Tomorrow, we begin preparing the contract bond. And Elira—”

He paused at the doorway.

“If Kael comes looking for you,” he said quietly, “I won’t stop him from trying.”

The doors closed behind him, leaving me alone in the echoing chamber, Papa’s stabilized soul-vessel warm against my heart.

For the first time since the Moon turned away, I did not feel lost.

I felt claimed.
