Chapter 4

The first night in Blackfang territory passed without dreams.

That alone told me how far I had fallen.

In Silvermoon, my sleep had always been filled with the echo of pack-heartbeats — the layered breathing of hundreds of wolves bound by Moon law and bloodline magic. Even in my chambers, I’d felt their presence like a second pulse beneath my own skin.

In Blackfang, there was only silence.

Not empty silence.

Watchful silence.

I woke before dawn with my muscles coiled tight, my wolf pacing restlessly beneath my ribs. The chamber Nicero had given me was carved into the citadel wall, dark stone polished smooth, no symbols of rank or comfort. Only a narrow window slashed into the rock, overlooking the forest canopy stretching endlessly below.

No banners.

No silver sigils.

No reminders that I had ever been Luna.

I rose and dressed in the plain tunic left on the chair. The fabric smelled faintly of cedar and iron — Blackfang’s scent. It clung to me as if testing whether I would resist it.

I didn’t.

I slipped from the room into the corridor, moving quietly, unwilling to announce myself in territory that had not yet decided whether I was prey or guest.

The citadel was already awake.

Wolves in half-shifted form crossed the stone bridges suspended between towers, their eyes flicking toward

me with frank curiosity. No one bowed. No one stepped aside. In Silvermoon, even warriors had dipped their heads when I passed. Here, I was just another wolf walking through stone and shadow.

It stung more than I expected.

I followed the corridor downward, drawn by the scent of ash and iron until the passage opened into Blackfang’s lower training grounds. A cavern the size of a small city yawned beneath the citadel, its ceiling lost in mist. Warriors sparred in brutal silence, bodies crashing together with bone-jarring force. No ritual circles. No Moon banners.

Only raw power.

One of them was thrown across the sand, landing at my feet with a grunt. He rolled to his knees, blood at the corner of his mouth, then looked up at me.

His eyes widened. “You’re her.”

“I don’t know who you think I am,” I said.

He barked out a humorless laugh. “The Silvermoon Luna who cut her mate-mark and walked into Blackfang like she owned the mountain.”

That story had already spread.

Before I could respond, the air shifted. Conversations stopped mid-sentence. The cavern fell unnaturally still.

Nicero stepped onto the upper ledge.

He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to.

“Continue,” he said simply.

The warriors obeyed at once, the tension breaking as sparring resumed. His gaze found mine across the cavern, and I felt the Moon-root’s lingering resonance hum faintly in my bones.

He descended with measured strides. “You shouldn’t wander alone yet.”

“I’m not wandering,” I replied. “I’m learning the terrain.”

“Good,” he said. “You’ll need to.”

He gestured to the far end of the cavern, where an older wolf lay propped against a stone pillar, chest bound in blood-soaked cloth. His breathing was shallow, ragged.

“Your first lesson,” Nicero said. “Blackfang does not coddle weakness. That warrior challenged a Frostborne marauder pack yesterday. He misjudged the terrain and paid for it.”

I stared at the man. “Is he going to die?”

“Possibly.”

“And you’re letting him suffer as an example?”

“No,” Nicero replied evenly. “I’m letting him choose whether he still wants to live.”

The wounded wolf’s eyes snapped toward us. Something fierce flickered behind the pain.

“I want to fight,” he rasped.

Nicero nodded once. Then he turned to me. “Your magic stabilized a fading soul last night. Show me what you can do when the blood is still warm.”

My breath caught. “You want me to heal him?”

“Attempt it,” Nicero corrected. “Success is optional. Courage is not.”

I knelt beside the warrior, my heart pounding. Papa’s soul-binding had drained me more than I’d admitted. But this was different. This was flesh and bone, not spirit threads.

I placed my hands over the wound, drawing slowly on the Moon-root’s echo still embedded in my veins. Silver light flickered weakly between my fingers, hesitant, unstable.

The warrior hissed in pain.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

“Don’t be,” he growled through clenched teeth. “Just don’t fail.”

The magic surged — not from me, but through me. Blackfang’s territorial energy coiled around my silver threads, darkening them, strengthening them. It felt… heavier. More demanding.

The bleeding slowed.

The torn flesh knitted partially, sealing just enough to stop the immediate danger.

I collapsed back on my heels, dizzy, sweat beading at my temples.

The warrior exhaled shakily. “Damn… it worked.”

Not completely.

But enough.

A murmur rippled through the cavern — not applause, not praise, but acknowledgement.

Nicero studied me for a long moment. “You didn’t heal him the Silvermoon way.”

“I don’t think I remember how anymore,” I admitted.

“Good,” he said. “Because that way would have killed him.”

He turned and began walking toward the exit. “You start training tonight.”

---

That evening, I stood at the edge of the Moon-root chamber once more, watching as Blackfang elders etched a new circle around the ancient root. Unlike Silvermoon’s rituals, this one was brutal in its simplicity — no flowing patterns, only angular symbols carved deep enough to bleed.

Nicero approached me as the elders stepped back.

“The contract bond is not a mating rite,” he said. “It’s a declaration of allegiance. Once bound, your fate will intertwine with Blackfang territory. Your power will not be drawn from Kael’s Moon. It will come from this land.”

“And the cost?” I asked quietly.

He met my gaze. “If you betray Blackfang, the Moon-root itself will hunt you.”

My wolf stirred uneasily.

“And if Kael comes?” I pressed.

Nicero’s mouth curved faintly. “Then he will discover what it means to challenge a pack that doesn’t worship mercy.”

The circle flared, dark silver light rising like mist from the carved runes.

I stepped forward.

Behind me, the distant howls of Blackfang rolled through the mountain — not a welcome.

A warning.

And this time, I didn’t run from it.
