Chapter 2

I learned two truths that night.

The first was that severing a mate-mark did not kill you.

The second was that sometimes, it left you wishing it had.

The ritual chamber beneath the High Spire was not meant for mercy. It had been carved into the mountain long before the Silvermoon Pack had a name, when wolves believed pain was the only honest language between blood and Moon.

I stood barefoot on the stone slab, my wrists bound loosely with lunar cord—not to restrain me, but to prevent my wolf from tearing free when the blade touched the mark.

Kael stood across from me, his expression unreadable, his posture rigid with authority. Lyra lingered behind him, draped in pale silk, her scent no longer that of my sister but something sharp and metallic that made my wolf recoil.

“You still have time to reconsider,” Kael said.

I almost laughed.

“Reconsider what?” My voice came out raw. “Losing my child? Losing my father? Or losing you?”

His jaw tightened. “This is necessary. The pack cannot function with a Luna who rejects the Moon.”

“I didn’t reject it,” I whispered. “You just refused to hear me.”

He didn’t answer.

The High Priest stepped forward, his ancient eyes reflecting the rune fire. “Once the blade descends, the bond will unravel,” he intoned. “Not cleanly. Not quickly. You will feel the mark fight you. Your wolf will remember everything.”

Good, I thought bitterly. Let it remember.

The obsidian blade was lifted.

I closed my eyes.

The first cut was nothing like flesh. It was memory.

The moment Kael had knelt before me under the spring Moon, his voice trembling as he promised to protect me. The way my wolf had surged forward, not in submission, but in recognition.

The blade tore through that memory.

Pain exploded down my spine, my scream echoing across the chamber as silver light burst from my shoulder where his mark had once glowed.

My knees buckled. The cords went taut.

I felt him then—felt Kael’s presence rip away like a limb torn from my soul. The bond shrieked as it unraveled, threads snapping violently, leaving behind raw, bleeding emptiness.

I smelled blood.

Not mine.

His.

He staggered backward with a sharp grunt, clutching his chest as Lyra rushed to his side.

“Elira—stop this!” he barked hoarsely.

But I couldn’t stop.

The mark resisted, digging claws into every piece of me it had ever claimed. It showed me fragments of a life I had given freely—every compromise, every silence, every lie I’d swallowed to keep our pack whole.

And then—

It was gone.

The rune circle collapsed inward with a thunderous crack, and I fell forward onto the stone, gasping like I had been dragged from the depths of the Veil.

No bond.

No warmth.

Only hollow silence.

The High Priest raised his staff. “It is done. The Luna is unbound.”

Unbound.

Not free.

Kael did not come to me.

He stood rigidly, his chest heaving, as Lyra whispered urgently into his ear. I caught fragments of her scent—satisfaction laced with triumph.

I dragged myself upright, every nerve screaming.

“I’ll leave by dawn,” I said. “I won’t interfere with your pack again.”

That was when he finally looked at me.

There was no love in his eyes.

Only calculation.

“You will not leave,” Kael said. “Not yet.”

My heart sank. “What do you mean?”

“Your father’s spirit anchor is bound to Silvermoon territory,” he replied evenly. “The ancestral flame is weakening. If you cross pack borders now, his soul will fade before dawn.”

The words were calm.

They destroyed me.

“You promised me,” I whispered. “You said as long as I was your mate, you would keep him safe.”

“And you are no longer my mate.”

Lyra stepped forward, resting a hand lightly against his arm. “The Council will be deciding the next Luna soon. It wouldn’t do for you to disappear in the middle of such an important transition.”

I stared at her. “This was always your plan, wasn’t it?”

She tilted her head. “If you mean surviving? Yes.”

They left me there.

Not dragged to a cell. Not banished. Simply abandoned in the ritual chamber like discarded ash.

I made it back to my quarters alone.

The bond’s absence felt like frostbite—no pain at first, just numbness so deep I could barely register movement. I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, waiting for the agony to arrive.

It came in waves.

When I finally slept, I dreamed of a child I had never held, crying in a place I could never reach.

---

At dawn, I went to the ancestral shrine.

The flame that housed my father’s spirit was dimmer than I had ever seen it, flickering weakly against the encroaching shadows.

“I’m here,” I whispered, pressing my forehead to the altar stone. “I haven’t left you. Not yet.”

The crystal pulsed faintly.

Not enough.

Kael had been telling the truth. Once the mate-bond was severed, my authority over the shrine had begun to fade. I could feel it—like slipping fingers trying to hold water.

I had seven nights.

After that, Papa would be gone.

There was only one path left to me.

The one I had sworn never to walk.

I activated Nicero Blackfang’s sigil just before the border wards closed for the day.

His projection appeared almost immediately, dark hair loose around his shoulders, the faint glow of territorial magic outlining his form.

“Well,” he said lightly. “You look like hell.”

“I severed the bond,” I replied.

His eyes sharpened.

“And Kael let you live?”

“For now,” I said. “But he controls my father’s spirit anchor. I need your altar. The Moon-root beneath Blackfang lands—it can bind his soul.”

Silence stretched between us.

“You’re asking to merge bloodlines,” Nicero said at last. “That’s not a favor. That’s a war declaration.”

“I don’t care.”

“Do you even understand what a contract bond costs?” he murmured. “You’ll lose your claim to Silvermoon. You’ll become mine in the eyes of the Moon. There will be no returning to what you were.”

I laughed softly, without humor. “What I was is already dead.”

His gaze held mine through the sigil fire. Slowly, a smile curved his mouth—dangerous, unreadable.

“Seven nights,” he said. “Cross the Frostline Pass before the Moon reaches its zenith. If you’re late, I won’t open the wards.”

“And my father?”

“He will be transferred under Blackfang protection,” Nicero replied. “But the binding won’t hold unless you complete the bond.”

My throat tightened. “You’re certain?”

“I never offer certainty,” he said. “Only leverage.”

The sigil faded.

I exhaled shakily and turned from the shrine.

Lyra was waiting in the corridor.

“Planning your dramatic escape?” she asked mildly.

I didn’t answer.

She circled me slowly, eyes glittering. “You know, the pack already whispers that the Moon has chosen me. I wouldn’t have believed it myself—but after your little… incident…”

“You stole my child,” I said quietly.

She leaned close enough that I could smell the blood-magic clinging to her skin. “And you lost yours. That’s the difference between us, Elira. I take what I want.”

I smiled.

It surprised her.

“Enjoy your borrowed throne while you can,” I said. “Because the Moon remembers theft.”

Her eyes flashed. “You think Kael will ever let you go? You’re still useful to him.”

She was wrong.

That was the last time I would ever let them decide my worth.

That night, I packed only what I could carry.

The mate-mark still burned faintly on my shoulder—not glowing, not alive, but aching like a scar that refused to fade. I pressed my fingers to it one last time.

“I choose myself,” I whispered.

And when I crossed the border at dawn, the Silvermoon wards did not howl after me.

They were already forgetting my name.
